If anyone didn't see it happen, that's Connor "Fastest player in the history of the universe according to Knobgobble Media Co." Mcjesus that he outruns.

So I'm pretty stoked about this. It's alll coming together.

Still don’t understand why Virtanen wasn’t given a penalty shot there.

I am pumped for Jake this season.  Bought my tickets to watch the preseason game in Kelowna yesterday.

I for one hope they give him a good long shot at LW.  By all accounts that is where he played better in junior.  Coaches should at least try to play to players' strengths.

Looking for 18/22/40 from Jake this season.  Too much?

This is doable if he is given quality playing time with offensive players and not put with Beagle and Schaller.

To be fair.... I believe Connor was at the end of his shift here.  Never the less... He's no backcheck specialist.... whereas Jake is becoming just that and has offensive upside.  Great bridge contract!

Yeah, not just the end of his shift but IIRC he’d been on for pretty much the whole OT (you can see how gassed his linemates are), so possibly 70 seconds, while Jake had just started his shift.

But who cares about all that.

We have Jake “Faster than McDavid” Virtanen!

Shoulda kept Cole “Shuts Down McDavid” Cassels too.

And I think I remember a goalie who stoned Connor a few times back in minor midget, so maybe we should sign Jason “McDavid’s Kryptonite” Rhynold.

Add a few more similar players and we’ll definitely have the team we need. ;)

In all seriousness though, when Jake’s in shape and just flying, I think his speed and acceleration are comparable to McD, and that’s definitely a great weapon to have in your arsenal.

This extension is an excellent deal. Great value for Jake “as is” and could be a massive bargain if he progresses as many of us hope/expect.

Looks like McDavid lifted his stick. Nothing wrong there

Yeah, I think you're right coryberg. McD, reaches out without holding or hooking, and gets clean stick on stick contact, doesn't hit Jake's hands. Good stick check.

I'd like to add that yes his speed is great for a power forward, but he needs to develop the hands at that speed. Jason Chimera (who is my comparable player for Virtanen as of right now) was one of the fastest player in the league at one point, but that's about it. Although a Chimera floor (hopefully) for Virtanen wouldn't be so bad as he pulled out 1000+ NHL game career so far.

“He adds physical presence and speed to our line-up and can help create offensive chances when going hard to the net. We look forward to seeing Jake take the next step in his game and consistently contribute to the team’s success.” - Benning

Expected:

Speed

Physical presence

Create offensive chances by going hard to the net

Mandate for this contract:

Consistency

Gain Green’s unquestioned confidence

Explain? He hasn't proven anything yet.

I think he's proven that he can play at the NHL level and contribute, which is reflected in his contract. His offseason regimen shows that he's taking his career seriously.

The next step for Virtanen is to be able to openice hit McDavid at the red line and send him flying while speeding his way to the net and score.
