Quinn Hughes announces his return to Michigan

So weird that he, and the management, put out all signs he was going pro. And then this drops.  On a Saturday morning.  Never believe anything anyone says about anything, until it is right in front of your own face for you to judge yourself.

Damn, it's amazing how we're still going to have the same d-core as last season :/

Assuming Edler plays with Guds most of the year (which didn't happen last season) - that's probably one half the top four that'll be ok.  Tanev and whoever should make also for an ok other half of the top four.  We have plenty of third pairing guys to fill-out the blueline.

As always, it'll depend on the bad injuries get during the season.

If they did a redraft, petterson would prob go second after Nico in his draft year.

Add to that another year of development where he owned everything he touched.

Maybe. If Nico and Nolan didn't play in the league last year, Pettersson may be at number 1. That said, afaik, the Devils are very happy with Nico's rookie season (they think he's a 1C), the Flyers are happy with Nolan (his two-way game, health, and leadership; they think he has 1C potential), the Avs are very excited about Makar's potential (they think he's a top pairing D-man), the Stars are happy about Heiskanen's development (they think he can be a top pairing D-man).

I don't believe you.

May be tough for those who signed up for season tickets due to the Canucks marketing Quinn. Hopefully, Elias and Juolevi make the team and more than makes up for Hughes' absence.

It's pathetic, actually.

So OJ may be the first legitimate top 2 to 4 Dman to be a rookie in Vancouver in more than a decade and you call that pathetic?

Hughes is an enormous talent and very flashy but why have so many people forgotten about OJ?   He had a massive first professional season last year - by the end of the year, he was the go-to guy on PK, PP and as top pairing guy in a league that rarely lets rookie Dmen get regular shifts.

I guess in some ways I am happy the bar is set so low for his expectations with some of you in Vancouver land but, wow, he has just as much potential to be a stud for the Canucks as Hughes even if he does it with less flash.

It is what it is

Drafting one defenseman doesn't change the D core. We are rebuilding. We weren't going to win the cup this year with or without Hughes.

Free agent defensemen would do what other then mess up our draft position. Patience is needed . we still need to keep drafting high to build our chances for a cup contender not just a playoff team.

Signing a free agent d man to improve by 4 to 6 points would only hurt our draft stock.

To be fair, it was pretty tough for Tanev to crack the lineup in that role as a rookie (much deeper blueline back then).  Would still be an impressive feat for OJ obviously (wouldn't be that much of a stretch to happen given his "pedigree").

As much as I wanted to see QH in a Canucks' uniform this year, this is the best decision.  At least this probably means that the Canucks don't have to worry about signing both EP and QH in the same year after their ELCs are up.

Considering how pathetic the D was at getting pucks on net, moving the puck up the ice, and defending in general, coming in with exactly the same group makes absolutely zero sense.  Where are the try outs?  Where are the EU players?  If the ONLY competition coming in, is Juolevi, where is the pressure to compete for a position going to come from?  This is why it is pathetic.  I was expecting a musical chairs scenario on D, like we did with our forwards for the coming 2 seasons.  The status quo = pathetic.  Like I said.

Pretty dope that he has the character to make this decision himself too, eh. He’s good enough to play right now and most likely pretty well. I think it’s pretty rad he has the maturity to recognize the benefit of still going back and prioritize it over the excitement of playing his first nhl game. The roster spot was his if he wanted it and both Jim and the high majority of us (even if you won’t admit it) wanted to give it to him but he declined. He declined for the greater good of both his career and the hockey franchise we love dearly.

What a effing beauty the young man is.

Much bigger body than Tanev too....OJ would immediately become one of the biggest Canucks in size (height and weight).
