[Trade] Jeff Skinner to BUF

Recommended Posts

An underwhelming return for Carolina, but they're a weird team right now with the new owner getting overly involved. They've gone from just outside the playoff mix to what's likely another attempt at a retool.

Good deal for Buffalo though, they're not exactly hurting for picks and could use the offensive punch in the arm.

It's purely a money move.  The owner doesn't want to lose tens of millions so another rebuild with cheap young players is in Carolina's present and future.

wow

just had a quick peek

at buffalo's team salary details

they have about 6 million in cap space

and wow.. boy .. hell

they sure are splurgin on goaltending

they are putting montreal to shame :P

Hutton was actually the best available goalie.  The market wasn't exactly booming with goalies this off-season.

$3.5 million total on the tending position

shows a real commitment to the last line of defense

at least they improved their defencement

although that really is at a cost of less then 1 million before bonuses etc

Yep.  Lehner wasn't worth his cost.  They're hoping that Hutton will have another good year this year.  Overall, they're just buying time for Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to develop.  They have very high hopes for him.

I think Carolina actually wins this deal since Skinner has only one year left on his contract anyways. Getting that many picks and a B prospect is a nice deal.

They're getting hammered mostly because they could have gotten more for him at the TDL.  The new owner in Carolina is just interested in shedding his salary.  If the Sabres can't re-sign him then they will end up in a poorer position trade-wise, but if they do sign him to a contract then Carolina will be the only loser in the trade rather than both teams.

A fair point. The tipping point for me saying that Carolina was the winning team was the single year. If Buffalo can re-sign him, and he produces like he has so far in his career, Buffalo may very well come out as winners, so long as Pu doesn't become a star NHL player out of nowhere.

Skinner asked for a trade at exit meeting with Dolan at end of season.

He also had NMC in his contract.

When you take all things into consideration I believe GM Waddell when he says he spoke to all teams over past 4 months and this is the best deal they could get.

BUF gets a very good top 6 winger. I see Skinner getting 35 goals next season.

Sabres could put him on top line with Eichel but I think its more likely they'll play him on 2nd line with Middlestadt. Good top 2 lines and spread the scoring.

BUF will be fun to watch next season.

Pu becoming a top 6 forward will be the only way they come out looking good in this trade.  It has to hurt that fanbase that the owner wasn't willing to wait a a few months into the season and shell out a few million in salary in order to get what would likely have been a better prospect and a 1st round pick though.

If Carolina wasn't a terrible place for hockey, as evidenced by their attendance, I'd feel bad for them.

Good sign for Buffalo for him to agree to go there in that case.   Reasonable return given the correct length and likely reluctance to retain salary to accommodate a contender.

Pretty even trade but I feel bad for Carolina's fan.
