What a legend this man is.

He could have hurt others with a plane like that. The company is now out an airplane, despite being insured , and possible property damage with the crash, fire crews. The cost of sending a jet to monitor and holding up air traffic. Hardly a legend. Sadly no one wants to talk about the elephant in the room of mental illness. Maybe stop worrying about building walls around Mexico and bogus Space Force and spend some money on providing treatment to people. Maybe there will be less suicides, gun sprees, and homelessness?

According to a guy on CNN (who's apparently in the know) it's actually fairly common for mechanics to climb into the cockpit of planes to "test out systems" after they have been serviced. It's likely that the control tower didn't realize what this guy was up to until it was too late to do something.

To @Lancaster's point, I think we'll see increased security in the future, but it will be airport employees who are subject to greater security.

I don't know about anyone else, but this immediately made me think of Colton Harris: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colton_Harris_Moore

Don't worry..... airport security will be ramped up.  Additional checks for those grandparents in wheelchairs and double-checking infant formulas to make sure they're legit..... because why not?

Because it's apparently fun to tear grandpa's entire bag apart in front of everyone else (a bag that took him 2 hours to carefully pack) and then shove his stuff down the ramp and make him repack it all.

Very fortunate that the plane didn't land / crash in a residential area..........

Sounds like he crashed into Ketron Island. Ketron is a very small island about 1km long and about 500 meters wide.

I looked it up on a satellite map. It is sparsely populated, but I counted about 10 houses. This guy could have easily killed people on the ground.

I assume he crashed into the southern end of the island where there are no houses and it is just forest.

What a crazy story. No pun intended.

He hurt no one but himself. If anything's ever going to change, it will be from actions like his. When the economic damage from the lost aircraft and grounded flights is understood to be an extension of not making mental health care and other social services available and effective, then there might be actual incentive to make fundamental changes.

Also, he did a barrel roll.

There's lots of people that do barrel rolls especially at Abbotsford this weekend. The guy who test flew the 747 did a barrel roll. Just because he didn't hurt anyone but himself, doesn't mean he couldn't have. Then there's the people in his life he's damaging. There's a bigger picture here, the bottom line is someone shouldn't have to destroy property and himself to make changes.

The man who stole the plane has been identified:

The family of an airline employee who stole and later crashed a plane near Seattle have said they are “stunned and heartbroken”, as authorities investigate how the major security breach happened.

The family of Richard Russell – who was a ground services employee with Horizon Air, part of Alaska Airlines – said the actions of “Beebo”, as he was known to them, had come as “a complete shock to us”.

“It may seem difficult for those watching at home to believe, but Beebo was a warm, compassionate man,” said their statement. “He was a faithful husband, a loving son and a good friend. A childhood friend remarked that Beebo was loved by everyone because he was kind and gentle to each person he met.

“As the voice recordings show, Beebo’s intent was not to harm anyone and he was right in saying that there are so many people who loved him.”
