Tre Mac
Bunch of Rusty Shacklefords in here. I'd like a built-in dashcam in my next vehicle.

Let's take the premise of your post: I live in a city that has very few surveillance cameras and plenty of the ones that they do have are used for temporary purposes. Since they are used in areas that are high-crime only, I'm ok with that because it saves me from having to pay taxes for extra officers to patrol just that area. Now would I ever become a UK citizen and move to a city like London that has one of the largest concentration of surveillance cameras in the world, not a snowball's chance in h*ll. Yup you're right about the UK there is no privacy there that's for sure. Well that was the original plan here to watch for high crime/collision incidents, but they've also expanded that a bit and we just trust them that's all they're looking at? I'm not sold that's all they watch for, I'm sure that's what it's used for most of the time but like everything nothing is done as it said to be done, rules are always broken. As you mentioned about owning a new vehicle, not knocking you for owning one it's hard to turn one down it's nice having something new. I on the other hand will not own a new vehicle because I don't trust them for privacy reasons and allowing someone to basically control what you do, I don't trust all the electronic gadgets installed in vehicles now a days, and I like to work on my own vehicles much easier with older vehicles. Basically I'm all for having privacy but I don't believe it's only in what we own, there are other ways the government or city can watch people and say it's for something else and everyone will just accept it because the government says so, not like they're ever corrupt.... We're basically in agreement on everything then except the local aspects of surveillance. If Buffalo and the surrounding suburbs were to suddenly start putting cameras all over the place, I'd fight against them and if I'm overruled because I end up in the minority, I'd most likely move. Fortunately Buffalo citizens aren't willing to give up all of our privacy. Could that eventually change? Sure, but it's not likely until I'm already infirmed or dead. Ghostsof1915
If you want a Dash cam, install one. It shouldn't be mandatory. I think a collision avoidance and lane departure sensors are a great idea though.

You can also access traffic cameras on the thruway to check on traffic. What's your point?
mpt
2 hours ago, SabreFan1 said: It's the beginning of a slippery slope. When you give up a part of your liberty and/or privacy, you risk getting even more of it taken away. You don't find mandatory recording devices a problem, so what would stop the government from going one step further and eventually mandating an implantable tracking chip underneath your skin? If we use your line of arguing, "Unless you're doing something illegal and/or dangerous, what do you have to hide?" there's a built in perfect excuse for a government to do exactly that. Not really, the dash cam would be owned by you and you only have access to your own cam. Wheres the privacy issue? I have a dash cam in my car, if I want to see the footage I can and if I don't, no one else can either; it belongs to me. If someone else wants the footage, get a warrant. Although I can easily detach the power from them if I want. Cell phones are more worrisome. The mic's and tracking in them can be remotely activated. Like I said in an earlier post, I own the onboard computer in my current vehicle that records everything that I do, but if a judge decides to issue a warrant, they can easily access it's content and use it against me in court. It would be the same if they had mandatory dash-cams.

It is also your duty as a citizen to not participate in criminal activity. If you do, you should be jailed.

Wow, you would make such an obedient Republican drone here in the U.S. I prefer not incriminating myself. We even have that written into our Constitution. You would also not be incriminating yourself by pleading the fifth. Having evidence and testifying against yourself are different. I prefer to help out fellow members of society and protect their freedom against people who infringe on the liberties of others.

That has already been confirmed by the Justice Department. If another citizen is recording you on your own private property though, they risk running afoul of things like peeping tom laws.
