Unfortunately Canucks don't get last change at every faceoff of the game..... nice try though....  Games / lineups and matchups are fluid...

You don't say...

Just hope the Canucks are willing to do what it takes to keep him safe......   Tit for Tat is the key.

Green will. That's a no brainer. Do you honestly think that he would send Petterson out against larger, more aggressive players without a plan on how to manage the threat?

Hope your right.. I don't see a nuclear threat on our club... No Lucic type......

Personally  i would have brought in a legit heavyweight forward for the 4th....   The kids deserver / need protecting...

If you're only looking at the forward corps, there is no Lucic (in his prime) type of player that would stave off such attacks, I agree. However, when looking at the entire roster, Erik Gudbranson is a very legitimate physical threat to the opposing team whenever he's on the ice.

Take a look at last year's games to understand how other players view him. In the first game of the regular season against Edmonton, Gudbranson leveled Lucic, and Milan gave Guddy nothing more than a half-assed slashtap to the shin that amounted to nothing.

He manhandled Tom Wilson, who attacked him, and provided more than enough crease-clearing and teammate protecting moments last season to prove his worth from that perspective.

If Guddy stays healthy, I have every belief that he'll be a dominant physical force that will help usher in a new and more aggressive era of Canucks hockey.

Leipsic 9 points in 14 games for us. The kid is an in your face hockey player to boot. I wouldn't group him with the others.

I *almost* agree with you on this.  Leipsic is probably better than some of them, but he needs to be better than Dahlen to ensure he keeps his spot on the starting roster and Dahlen is certainly making a case for himself.

Additionally, Tim Schaller needs to make a case for himself on the roster and a playing a strong physical role will make him much more valuable in a roster spot.  Roussel isn't a heavyweight, but he'll answer the bell from time to time.  A guy like Bo needs nobody to stand up for him.  Beagle isn't known for fighting, but he's a big boy at 6'3" 218lbs, and Jake Virtanen is also a solid guy.  Honestly, the league is moving away from the goonery of days gone by and I for one say good riddance to those days.  I sure hope someone like Virtanen catches that scumbag Kadri with his head down some time this season.

All the players mentioned bring a physical aspect to their game that isn't solely based on fighting. Physicality is still very much a part of the game, as proven by the Capitals. They didn't get into many fights during any of their series, but they did hit and rough up the opposition whenever possible.

EP is a little boy still.

Anyone remember McJesus getting hurt in his first year?

Anyone remember why Edmonton signed Lucic?

I have serious reservations about playing EP against Perry, Tkachuk, Kassian and whoever else.

Playing the long-game, not some ticket sales ploy that would see a young kid-star get hurt and become injury riddled from the daily cross checks to that skeleton-looking physique.

Save him for when it actually matters to this expansion team looking rebuild roster.

Except Lucic doesn't play with McDavid anymore. Only reason he played last season is that they are paying him a fortune. To protect McDavid may have been the idea but Maroon rode shotgun with McDavid more than Lucic ever did. Even this year, every Coiler fan is praying Lucic returns to form...from like 2011 when he was a good player and not a complete overpaid stiff.

Yes, i agree about Guddy.  He is a nuclear threat except his health issues no doubt are getting into his head...... so he will be looking to fight less.

No doubt he has heavyweight KO power.

I would like to see a heavier bigger HW forward on the club.  I know Antoine R will drop them  often but it won't look good if we see him getting KO'ed.  Dorset had a ton of heart but couldn't match up with other clubs heavy weights....

I know the game has changed.. gotten faster and younger... but for the next 2-3 years i would prefer to see a heavy weight forward on the 4th line  or even scratched and dressed when  we play teams that tend to play that style.... eg. run our kids.. run our goalies....

We'll see where he's at this season. I have a feeling we'll be pleasantly surprised.

Roussel is pretty fearless and tough, so I doubt he'd get KO'd. His ability to get under the opposition's skin will be his real worth, and he can play.

Yes it has, but it's still hockey, and hockey will always be a physical sport. Teams that have little to no size on their team leave themselves open to punishment. Toronto will regret not replacing Martin's presence, mark my words.

Gadjovich and MacEwen are big players with talent who have no issue standing up for their teammates. He'll Gadj KO'd a player on Winnipeg's Young Stars team who had quite a bit of size on him. Benning and Green like fast, uptempo hockey, but they also like the hard nosed, physical side of the game. I believe that they'll find the right balance.

I agree Roussel will drop em.. I think 16 fights over his last 2 seasons.....  but TBH ( according to most websites fan vote in )  he loses probably  70 %  of the fights he is in.

Not sure if this is really going to be enough of a deterrent.....

Fan voting isn't really an accurate statistic. The very presence of a player willing to stand up for another is sometimes all that's necessary. The Canucks have quite a few players willing to back each other up. Overall, this team will be much more of a handful than they've been in the past.

The turn the other cheek era is over.

There is not much more irritating to a skilled player, then having a big body leaning on them all over the ice.  No matter where the puck is, as soon as that skilled guy tries to get going, a bigger body is there to get in his way.  No need to grab or hold, just bump and make things difficult on the little skilled guy to go where he wants.  I would love to see us have a team of guys (especially Jake) who play that way.  They are a real pain in the A##.

Before everyone writes off Granlund, they should remember he has an older brother named Mikael who broke out in his 4th year in the league at age 25 with 26 goals and 69 pts.  Marcus is now 25... At age 24 Mikael scored 13 goals... Marcus has already shown when given an opportunity he can do better than that with his total of 19 two years ago.

At the very least, people should wait till training camp and the first couple weeks of the season are over before making a judgement... at the very least he should be worth something as trade bait.

Fighting is hardly a measure of 'toughness', particularly in today's NHL. There's almost no fighting these days in anyway. IMO, you're focusing on 10 years ago hockey.

Toughness = hitting, grinding/attacking and generally making your opponent's life a living hell, throughout the lineup, as a unit.

The couple guys we already had, plus the guys we added and some further development of young guys like Virtanen (and Gaudette if he makes it) will bring plenty of that element.

I really, REALLY hope that you’re right!

I want to see gritty Canucks hockey again.
