A #5 overall pick.  Yikes.

Does draft order really matter at the age of 30? I mean you've either made it or you haven't at that point regardless of if you're drafted 1st overall or in the 7th round. (with a few exceptions of course)

His career doesn't look all that stunning either.  Usually, when a player is considered superior (#5 overall), they can still play well into their 30s.  He still has a lot of years on a hefty contract, so the Habs probably thought he would still be a NHL player when they signed him.

Alzner only played 8 games this season.

He is probably a better defender than some of the guys they kept but he doesn't fit their system.  They are doing like many other teams and are defending by pushing for offence.  They want to be able to spend more time in the other team's end and Alzner doesn't help there.  Reilly, Mete are not better in front of the net than Alzner but they are better at carrying the puck out and helping keep the puck in the o-zone.

Why not just waive MDZ and not pick up a massive overpaid plug?

Ewwww. Hell no.

MDZ is done after this year.

Alzner has many years left, and he sucks.

That idea is almost as garbage as MDZ

He was a top-4 dman in Washington for almost a decade. One bad season on a bad team doesn't make him a plug. And contract doesn't really matter when the Canucks are trying to just stay above the salary floor.

Pick up an AHL-bound guy with that much cap and term left just to waive a smaller let alone expiring contract?

Why does it matter del zotto's contract is expiring. It's about replacing a bad player with a better player.

Huge pass. Laughable that some guys are thinking we should pick him up on that contract. We have 4 kids in the AHL that are probably better than Alzner right now at a fraction of that price.

Right, that's why they are in the AHL and Del Zaster still gets NHL time.

Bad team? They are playing good this season. They are 11-8-5 so far. If Eriksson's contract is bad, Alzner's is downright atrocious. Just cause we have money doesn't mean we should waste it on bad players. I'd argue he's not even an upgrade on MDZ.

They were 29-40-13 last year. The rest is your personal opinion.

Take a look at our cap and upcoming RFAs, then tell me you want to take up space with this plug.

This guy is slow and washed up.

It would be far passed stupid to claim him.
