I mean you've either made it or you haven't at that point regardless of if you're drafted 1st overall or in the 7th round. (with a few exceptions of course) His career doesn't look all that stunning either. Usually, when a player is considered superior (#5 overall), they can still play well into their 30s. He still has a lot of years on a hefty contract, so the Habs probably thought he would still be a NHL player when they signed him.
flickyoursedin
Huge pass. Laughable that some guys are thinking we should pick him up on that contract. We have 4 kids in the AHL that are probably better than Alzner right now at a fraction of that price.
rekker
Alzner has been an amazingly healthy player through his career. We should claim him as an experiment. My guess is he becomes a Canuck and is constantly injured.

mll
Alzner only played 8 games this season. He is probably a better defender than some of the guys they kept but he doesn't fit their system. They are doing like many other teams and are defending by pushing for offence. They want to be able to spend more time in the other team's end and Alzner doesn't help there. Reilly, Mete are not better in front of the net than Alzner but they are better at carrying the puck out and helping keep the puck in the o-zone. They are 11-8-5 so far. If Eriksson's contract is bad, Alzner's is downright atrocious. Just cause we have money doesn't mean we should waste it on bad players. I'd argue he's not even an upgrade on MDZ.
Provost
At 50% retained, I take on that contract At that rate it doesn’t hurt too bad if you end up having to bury it in the minors in the event he is terrible and not worth $2 million

Take a look at our cap and upcoming RFAs, then tell me you want to take up space with this plug. This guy is slow and washed up. It would be far passed stupid to claim him.
