Wow, the sim change to Jimbo Meyer's attributes from my original template was a drop of 44 points throughout the 3 tracked categories.

Any idea why the sim made these changes?

It's because of the current ability that we start out with. The attributes of a player are roughly tied to their ability rating (similar to EA NHL), so if a player's attributes are much lower or higher than what they should be according to their current ability, the game will naturally adjust them until they're more in line.

NHL_-_2002_Draft_Toronto.JPG

James Duthie - Welcome to the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, hosted by the Toronto Maple Leafs! I'm your host, James Duthie and I am pleased to be joined by Insiders and Scouts Bob McKenzie, Craig Button and Corey Pronman.

Bob McKenzie - This weekend will be the beginning of the future for over 200 young men, as tonight is the first stepping stone as they will find out where they will begin their NHL careers.

Craig Button - Heading into the draft, the consensus #1 pick is the big 6'4 winger from the Oshawa Generals, Rick Nash. Nash has been at the top of the draft rankings for the entire season, and is expected to become the next franchise player for the historic Montreal Canadiens.

Corey Pronman - Another Canadian team will join the Canadiens with the chance to select a franchise player, with the Winnipeg Jets having the 2nd overall pick. The Minnesota Wild will then follow the Jets with the 3rd overall pick. Its expected that Jay Bouwmeester and Joe Pavelski will be the #2 and 3 picks respectively, however anything can go down on draft day!

BM - I've talked to scouts from many teams, and they believe this may be one of the deepest drafts in recent memory. There's a chance for teams to select impact players into the 2nd and 3rd Round, however many prospects available are still very raw.

JD - We are almost set to get underway here in Toronto, here comes commissioner Gary Bettman to the podium!

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRylSEdG2BqY2hKXX4hObM

*booing*

Gary Bettman - Hello and thank you for the warm welcome Toronto! Tonight will be the start of another journey for 30 young men, as they will become first round draft picks in the National Hockey League. Without further ado, the Montreal Canadians are on the clock!

With the 1st overall pick in the 2002 NHL Draft, the Montreal Canadiens are pleased to select, from Herning IK Jrs of the Denmark Jr League, Frans Nielsen!

BM - WOW! What an absolute shock! The Montreal Canadiens go off the board and pick a Danish center who was ranked by many to go into the mid teens.

With the 2nd overall pick, the Winnipeg Jets are extremely excited to select: Alexander Steen!

CP - Oh my, I hope these teams know something that we don't. The Jets pass on the supposed BPA and instead select the son of former Jet Thomas Steen.

With the 3rd overall pick, the Minnesota Wild are ecstatic to select, Rick Nash.

CB - Finally, our projected number one selection comes off the board at number three to the Minnesota Wild. It seems as if teams are willing to take some risks early, I wonder if this will carry on throughout the rest of the first round?

With the 4th overall pick, the Columbus Blue Jackets select Jay Bouwmeester.

With the 5th overall pick, the Arizona Coyotes are pleased to select: Ryan Kesler.

With the 6th overall pick, the Detroit Red Wings select Mark Giordano.

With the 7th overall pick, the San Jose Sharks select, from Djurgarden J20, Mighty Mite!

CB - The Sharks take no chances and select their man at #7, Mite may have the most offensive potential in the entire draft. Ranked 17th overall coming into the draft, Mite is planning on suiting up for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL next season.

BM - There definitely are MAJOR risks with Mite however. Listed as 5'9 and only 114 lbs, he will be the smallest player in the entire league. How will his body hold up? Will he be able to play PK or even a regular shift at even strength? San Jose is very likely to benefit on the PP in the future, however they better find a good partner for Mite otherwise they'll be playing in their own zone instead of the offensive zone.

CP - An all offense, no defense type defender, there may not be many players who can keep up with Mighty Mite skating wise. I compare him to a Brian Leetch, however with a tiny frame. I am very interested to see what San Jose plans to do for this young Swede in the near future. For a team that drafted Duncan Keith last season, and now Mighty Mite this year, they are definitely putting an emphasis on defenseman for the future.

With the 8th overall pick, the Philadelphia Flyers select Kari Lehtonen.

With the 9th overall pick, the Dallas Stars select Zach Parise.

With the 10th overall pick, the Carolina Hurricanes select Josh Gorges.

... (skipping ahead)

With the 18th overall pick, the St. Louis Blues are pleased to select, from the Vancouver Giants of the WHL, Giambattista Vaselinesta!

CP - Finally, our 7th ranked prospect comes off the board to the Blues. The towering 6'8, 218 lbs defender is always keen to jump up in the rush, and had a staggering 107 points this past season in the WHL.

BM - Vaselinesta has all the tools to become a #1 defenceman in the NHL. A good skater with a good first pass, and an even better shot. However, there are some questions on how committed he is defensively, which may be why he has slipped to 18th overall.

CB - There are some teams who thought Vaselinesta can potentially jump into the NHL as early as next season. I wouldn't be surprised to see this, as Vaselinesta has sky high potential. With his humongous size, there truly are no limits to where Vaselinesta can reach. Might I add, who better for the big Canadian to learn from than fellow Canadian all star dman Chris Pronger? Pronger will be influential in the development of Vaselinesta in the future.

With the 23rd overall pick in the 2002 NHL Draft, the Calgary Flames select Ville Lehtinen from Jokerit-A Jrs.

BM - Coming off the board at 23 is Finnish Two-Way Forward Ville Lehtinen. At 6'6 and 200 lbs, many scouts have compared Lehtinen to a more talented Todd Bertuzzi. Still thought to be a few years away from the NHL by some, Lehtinen will be coming to North America and suiting up for the Erie Otters next season.

CB - Lehtinen is one of my favourite players in the draft. When you combine his size with his determination, character and two-way game, you have a future captain on your hands. It seems like Lehtinen is always two steps ahead of the play, and he always uses his size to his advantage.

CP - One thing that is underrated about Lehtinen's game is his skating. He is a very good skater for his size and sometimes catches defenders off guard. Give this kid some time to hone up parts of his game such as his scoring and stickhandling, and the Flames may have the perfect compliment to Marty St. Louis on their top line.

With the 24th pick, the Boston Bruins select Cranges McBasketball!

CP - The Bruins play the long game here, selecting McBasketball out of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Not yet committed to a college or university, it is believed that McBasketball is really pursuing the best possible fit for him and his future.

BM - I really don't blame him either Corey, this is a player who is more than a few years away from the NHL, but has all the tools that successful NHLers carry. Looking for a player who'll bring his A-Game every night, and look to score at every opportunity? The Bruins were, and they believe McBasketball is their man.

CB - I wonder if the Bruins will flex their Boston connection and try and get their newest top prospect to play at BU or BC? McBasketball is a very raw player, however if he can make it to his top potential, I see a player in the mold of Vaclav Pospisil. One thing that some scouts mentioned to me is that McBasketball could have even more goals than the 28 he put up this season if he improves his shot. With him being in college for at least the next couple years, I don't have a doubt that he won't improve his shot.

...

JD - That concludes Round 1 of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, some of the top names on the board still available heading into Day 2 include Pompous Jerk, Alexander Semin and James (Jimbo) Meyer.

round-2.jpg

With the 32nd overall pick, the Minnesota Wild are pleased to select, Raheem Sane-Sterling!

CB - History in the making here, as the Minnesota Wild have just drafted the highest ever Englishmen! Raheem was drafted out of the Elite Hockey League in England where he played alongside his twin brother Leroy. Raheem is a smart, offensive defenceman who knows when to jump up in the rush, and when to stay back.

BM - It was expected that Raheem would go ahead of his brother Leroy, as some scouts think Raheem can elevate his game to become a top pairing defenceman in the league. It'll be interesting to see what's next for Raheem, playing in England is not the best choice for his development, and obviously the Wild view highly of him to draft him in the early 2nd round.

CP - When I watch Raheem, I see shades of Ed Jovanovski. A defenceman who's capable of producing points if needed, but also capable of shutting down other teams top players. Raheem has excellent vision which leads to great first passes out of the zone, and does everything you ask for as a young defenceman in a professional league. Like Bob said, a step up in competition is needed, but I wonder if the Wild would still like him to play against men professionally, or go to Cape Breton, which has his CHL rights, and play against younger competition.

With the 33rd pick, the Columbus Blue Jackets select Pompous Jerk!

BM - A smaller winger, who seizes the opportunity to play a power forward like game goes 33rd overall to the CBJ. Jerk lives up to his name on the ice, as he is prepared to go into every battle with the intentions of getting the puck, and leaving his mark. Jerk sees the ice well, and is well known around the WHL for his aggression.

CP - A player we had going in the top round may have dropped to Day 2 due to his lack of offensive potential. Some may believe he doesn't have the shot or scoring ability to be productive in the NHL, and although he'll look to score with every opportunity he gets, it just doesn't happen sometimes.

CB - One scout told me he compares Jerk to Bates Battaglia, a player who plays his heart out no matter his size and is willing to do what it takes to win. If Jerk can improve on his scoring, he'll be a force to be reckoned with in the NHL. Jerk is a solid bet to be a relied upon top 6 forward for many years to come.

With the 34th overall pick in the 2002 NHL Draft, the Phoenix Coyotes select Lari Kehtonen!

CP - The second Finnish netminder to come off the board, after Kari Lehtonen, Kehtonen has an impeccable 0.938 save % over his last 4 seasons with TPS A-Juniors. Known for his athleticism and poise, this hybrid goalie will always produce when the heat is on.

BM - With a very good blocker and glove, Kehtonen regularly challenges shooters to beat him clean. With his superb athleticism, Kehtonen is able to use his reflexes to stop second and third opportunities, and can be a game changer for his team.

CB - The Coyotes are getting a player here who has the potential to be their future starting goalie for many years to come. The knacks on Kehtonen are his lack of puck handling ability and his size. One of these, Kehtonen can improve on while the other is matched with his athleticism and reflexes. I would like to see Kehtonen move on up and get a bigger challenge next season in net.

With the 37th pick, the San Jose Sharks select Hercules Kristoffersen!

CB - A big, smooth skating two-way centerman who tends to play more offense than defense comes off the board at 37 to the Sharks. Kristoffersen uses his big 6'5 frame to his advantage, and already has his first pro season in the SHL already under his belt.

CP - The Sharks make it back-to-back Swedes with their first two picks, as Kristoffersen joins Mighty Mite as a couple Swedes invading California. Kristoffersen's playing style is one that is compared to Alexei Yashin, however his inability to play sound defense may hold him back. However, because of his size, Kristoffersen is an easy bet to become a future NHLer.

BM - Totally agree with you Corey, in my opinion Kristoffersen's floor is a 3rd line center in the NHL. If he can prove he can handle full defensive responsibilities, he may become a 2nd or even a 1st line center. The Sharks will hope to see continued progression from Kristoffersen over the next couple seasons.

With the 38th pick, the Philadelphia Flyers pick Anton Eriksson!

CB - Anton Eriksson, the teammate of previous pick Kristoffersen is selected 38th overall by the Flyers. A two-way center who is on the smaller side has definitely impressed at the last two World Junior Championships, playing a top 6 role as a 16 year old and a 17 year old for the Tre Kronor. Eriksson is a phenomenal skater, who sees the ice very well and is able to distribute pucks off to his wingers with ease.

BM - Eriksson is a very poised player, noting seems to get in his head. We're talking about a player who has definite NHL potential, if he can put a little weight on. He is slightly undersized, but has already been playing against men in Sweden which will do nothing but propel his development even further.

CP - Historically, Eriksson is not a very big shooter, and its believed by many scouts that he could become an even bigger threat should he start shooting more. However, Philly has definitely found a player who would be the perfect complement behind Eric Lindros at the center position for years to come.

With the 39th pick, the Dallas Stars are pleased to select James (Jimbo) Meyer!

BM - The Stars snag the falling Meyer, who was previously ranked 25th heading into the draft. Meyer is a big goal scoring winger out of Tri-City in the WHL, where he put up a respectable 25 goals this past season. Meyer has outstanding hockey sense and skates decently well for his size.

CP - One issue which may have caused Meyer to drop in the draft is his lack of defense. As it stands, his game away from the puck is not good enough, and will need some improving in order for him to make it the next step into the league. At his size, he could use his body a bit more effectively, but we are talking about a big goal scoring forward who is still very raw.

CB - Meyer definitely has the tools to be a top line goal scorer in the league, but will need to hone out the fine details in his game in order to reach this potential. The next few years will be big for Meyer, as they will determine whether or not Meyer can be a top player in the NHL, or a powerplay specialist in the NHL, or a glorified AHL scorer.

With the 40th overall pick, the Carolina Hurricanes select Dominico Vafunculo!

CP - The former #1 pick in the 2001 Import Draft goes #40 to the Hurricanes in 2002. As a rookie this year in the QMJHL, Vafunculo almost put up a PPG while showing he can be an effective goal scorer with a 30+ goal season. Vafunculo's shot is his best asset and is what makes him the most effective out on the ice.

CB - At 6'3 but only 167 lbs, Vafunculo still has some filling out to do. When he does, Vafunculo should have all the tools to make him a top goal scorer in the league. While his shot is good, the same cannot be said about his passing. Not a very good passer, it is easy for teams to key in on Vafunculo and take away his shot, knowing he likely doesn't have the passing skills needed to distribute the puck elsewhere.

BM - One of the highest drafted Italians ever, Vafunculo is a player that has gained an international following over the years. Vafunculo is another one of the players in this draft whom are very raw at the moment, but have the potential to turn great. It'll be interesting to follow who is able to pan out and who isn't.

With the 51st overall pick, the Los Angeles Kings select Dominik Stijn!

CB - More history, as Dominik Stijn has just become the first player of Netherlands descent to be drafted into the NHL! The Dutchman who joined the Prince Albert Raiders midway through this season is a goal scoring forward who is also able to rack up the points through assists.

BM - Stijn is a tremendous skater with tremendous speed, however there are other parts to his game that has scouts desiring a bit more. Many scouts want to see Stijn play a more defensive game, and not be focused on the offensive points at all times.

CP - Like Vafunculo and the Sane-Sterling twins, many fans will be excited to see the progression of Stijn over the next couple years. If he can round out his game, Stijn can definitely be a top 6 centerman in the league who is a constant threat to put up points. However, it remains to be seen whether the Kings will ignore his weaknesses if he can't improve them.

With the 52nd pick in the 2002 Draft, the Edmonton Oilers select Kyllian Scheidt.

CP - A big playmaking centermen who displays top hockey smarts with the puck. Played for SC Bern Jrs in Switzerland and did not disappoint, as well as a strong showing at the World Juniors. For his 6'4 frame, Scheidt skates very well for his size.

CB - One of my favourite prospects in this draft class, I'm not sure why the rankings kept Scheidt in the mid-late 2nd round range all year. For a player of his size, and the tools he currently possesses, it seems like a safe bet for Scheidt to become an NHLer.

BM - Agreed Craig, Scheidt may be a guy who sees the NHL sooner rather than later. Like every player, Scheidt has some holes to his game, however these flaws are issues that can easily be fixed such as his stickhandling and shot. In a few years I predict he will be one of those guys that makes us ask "why didn't he go higher?".

With the 57th pick, the Colorado Avalanche select Ondrej Dostalik!

BM - A massive 6'6 goaltender out of Slovakia, the Avs snag a goalie who is already playing pro hockey, and is seemed to be learning the game at a rapid pace. Dostalik is a hard-working goalie who always brings out his best in big games.

CP - Dostalik has a very good blocker and glove, and forces shooters to beat him low, where he excels with his big 6'6 frame. Scouts that have watched him play this season noted to me that his rebound control does need some work. Dostalik has tendencies to let out bad rebounds at the wrong times, which lets opponents capitalize on them.

CB - I see Dostalik as a future starting goalie in the NHL, he won't be an elite goalie but he'll be a guy that can steal you a few games. I think he'll be able to turn into a goalie that teams can rely on to get them to the playoffs, but he will need to improve a bit more to be the guy who can win you a Cup.

...

Round3.png

With the 74th overall pick, the Buffalo Sabres select Hayes Al Mahrouqi!

CB - A small offensive playmaking center who has kind of been hidden away in a German U20 league. Scouts didn't get to watch many of his games live, but when they do they generally came away impressed. Al Mahrouqi is a quick, deceptive skater who thrives under pressure.

BM - Al Mahrouqi is a slick little player, he'll always attempt to pull off the skillful stuff whenever he gets the opportunity to do so. He also has a very good hockey sense, he knows what's going to happen before it happens. Is also incredibly poised, has seemed to deal with whatever challenges that has come his way thus far.

CP - This is a player with a sky high potential, but it may be doubtful for him to reach it. Al Mahrouqi has major issues defensively, and also struggles to keep up physically. This is a home run type pick for the Sabres, and it may turn into that or they may swing and miss.

...

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTgsOu6-37_vq9lklY_ar1

With the 92nd overall pick, the Minnesota Wild are pleased to select Leroy Sane-Sterling!

CP - Oh my goodness, what a story this is! The Minnesota Wild have re-united the twins, Leroy and Raheem Sane-Sterling! What a terrific moment for the two brothers from England, getting the opportunity to start their professional careers together is something they will never forget.

CB - A very nice moment indeed. Leroy was a player who was able to enjoy more offensive production than his brother Raheem, however it remains to be seen what his full potential is. It is easy to tell that Raheem will be the better player than Leroy, but by how much?

BM - For me, this may be a publicity stunt for the Wild. Having the opportunity to have two brothers play on your team is good for the fans, and Leroy may get every opportunity to join his brother on the NHL team in the near future, even if he may not deserve it as much as his brother.

With the 96th overall pick, the Detroit Red Wings select Hodor Hodor!

BM - A lightning quick butterfly goalie, goes here to the Red Wings at 98. Hodor is a strong-willed competitive player, who will bring his A-game every night. He hasn't gotten much opportunity to play over the last two years, so his potential remains a mystery to some scouts.

CP - Hodor is a goalie with a very good blocker and glove, he is very athletic and shows a great sense of what to do under pressure. Is very poised, and has the potential to become a starter in the NHL.

CB - One criticism I have heard about Hodor is that he tends to play smaller than his 6'4 height in net. He'll play small, and not use his size to advantage. If he can get paired with a goalie coach who can fix this, Hodor may have some untapped potential that nobody has seen yet.

With the 98th pick, the Philadelphia Flyers select Grimson Bastage!

CB - The recent Cornell commit, Bastage is a responsible two-way forward who is very determined and thrives in big games. He is a good skater, and has a great sense of what is going on during games.

BM - Scouts have said that sometimes Bastage's game leaves more to be desired. He is a very "safe" player, and doesn't take many risks offensively or defensively. If he is able to expand his comfort zone, the Flyers may have a player on their hands.

CP - Bastage will need a few years at college to develop, but should he reach his full potential at this moment, he'd be a top 6 player in the NHL. In order for him to be any better, he'll need to produce more offensively.

With the 102nd pick, the Vancouver Canucks select Joey Freedom!

CP - A big, 6'4 center who already had a successful freshman campaign at Providence College producing at a 0.74 PPG clip. Freedom is a player that can come into your organization, and provide you with a prospect you can rely on to use his size to his advantage, and chip in with a few points.

CB - For a big man, Freedom is actually a decent skater. He is constantly moving his feet whether he is in the offensive or defensive zone, and has already taken on a leadership role in the NCAA.

BM - Freedom will need to improve on his defense and puckhandling skills if he wants to become a top 6 center in the NHL, but with his size and strength, he is a safe bet to at least be a reliable bottom 6 center.

With the 109th pick, the Tampa Bay Lightning select Cassian Mercury!

BM - An attacking, playmaking center who may have dropped due to his small size and weight. Mercury has good numbers with the Brandon Wheat Kings over the past 2 seasons, and will look to improve on that in years to come.

CP - Mercury is a top tier playmaker in the WHL, he'll wait for the right pass to become available and will always find players when they are open. While he still scored a few goals this year, he could definitely get more should he improve his strength and shot.

CB - A lot will depend on whether Mercury can put on weight. As of right now, he's not big enough to be successful defensively, and there is only so much room for small players in the league who cannot defend. Should he get stronger, his chances for success in the league may go up significantly.

With the 111th pick, the Los Angeles Kings select Jozef Mama!

CB - A very skilled, offensive playmaking forward who has spent the last 4 years in Slovakia on the Slovan Jrs team. Is a very good puckhandler, and always seems to have a feel for where everyone is on the ice.

BM - At only 5'9, Mama is never going to be the biggest or strongest on the ice. Unfortunately, he's also not the best skater. At best, his skating is average but at his size you need to be a good skater to have success.

CP - Mama may still be able to find success, but it may be in a spark plug energizer bunny type role where he is able to chip in with a few points here and there. I would like to see him get a year in North America under his belt, and that is what he will be doing next season in Prince Albert.

..........

JD - With that, that concludes our 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Thanks for tuning along folks!

Sorry about the delay guys, took a while to write these up.

Good to see Lehtinen going to what I'm guessing is a good team in Calgary. Hopefully they take their time with him even though he could probably slot into a bottom-six role pretty soon. Wasn't expecting him to come over to North America and play in the OHL, but hopefully he can put in a big offensive year and really take a step forward.
