Vancouver, BC - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has signed defenceman Mitch Eliot to a three-year, entry level contract.

Eliot, 20, is currently in his second season with the OHL Sarnia Sting where he ranks fifth on the team in scoring with 28 points (7-21-28) in 32 games. His point total this season also ranks him fifth among OHL defencemen in scoring. Prior to joining the Sting in February 2018, the 6-0, 168-pound defenceman played two seasons with the Michigan State Spartans (2-6-8 in 61 games) and two seasons with the Muskegon Lumberjacks (5-12-17 in 113 games) of the USHL prior to that.

The Grosse Point, Michigan native also served as captain of Team USA at the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Tournament.

Right handed D, why not.  "A physical two-way defenceman that plays a structured competitive game. Smooth skating compliments his ability to control the puck at higher speeds. Displays a pretty hard shot and crisp tape-to-tape passing ability, but is actually relied on more in the defensive zone. Battles very hard for puck possession and sees the game in lanes. Very strong positionally and is poised in his own end. As he continues to grow, he will become a more well-rounded defenceman with each game, as he recognizes and learns from his mistakes. Can play long shifts. [EP]"

His dad had a cup of coffee as an NHL goalie as well.

Left MSU to join Sarnia earlier this year, with only 6 games to go, he just quit...

"Michigan State defenseman Mitch Eliot decided to leave the team earlier in the week to sign with Sarnia of the major junior OHL. The move came with just six games left in the regular season, which only added to Spartans' head coach Danton Cole's dismay.

"At this point of the season, it would've been nice if he wanted to leave to finish," Cole said. "If you want to leave early in the year, that's one thing, but six games to go and the Michigan weekend (coming up), it's an odd time.

"But we'll deal with it. We want the guys in the locker room who want to be in the locker room. If they don't want to be here, get the hell out of here. If that's where your head's at — it's hard enough winning when everyone's on the same page. So, you know what, our locker room is better."
