We had a decent pt producing D in the past we chose not to sign, so Im not shocked that we signed someone else vs a recent canuck pick. I hope we sign Brassard but JB has shown that he will pass on signing his own picks and choose to sign an undrafted overager like Sautner or Eliot

I think they will still sign brassard he’s been so good the last year or so.

mmmm...

so he is in line for the vacant captaincy?

but he just ran out on his team?  is that captaincy material?

bo is being traded ?

so confused ...

mmm .. maybe just a depth player

we are taking a flyer on

but not much drama in that viewpoint

not necessary talking about being captain, or even making the canucks.  I just like how the organization has a good track record of getting players that fit into the work hard/want to be part of winning organization.  As far as leaving his former team who knows what his circumstances were so probably not good to speculate about.

Brassard they will likely sign in the off-season to avoid burning a year (2018-19) off the contract. His deal can’t slide, but they can still get him for 3 years (2019-20 through 2021-22) if they wait and sign him to a contract effective next season.

With Mitch Eliot, it’s pretty much standard practice to sign 20/21 year old undrafted free agents during the season and have them burn a year off their deal (since they’re too old to slide) and let them collect ELC signing bonuses while they finish out their overager year in junior.

How does his deal not slide? He is playing in junior.

Hmm wonder what that holds for Matt Brassard going forward.  2 years back Canucks decide to sign Chatfield over Carl Neill because Chatty was a better skater and defensive player than Neill.  Wonder if they are anticipating the same with Brassard despite his offensive push in the OHL.  Much like Neill Brssard is a great offensive dman but his average skating amd defense might hild him back.

Eliot seems very similar to Jalen Chatfield in terms of play style.

Should be interesting tracking this.

Rare prospect that wasn't on my radar (I still thought he was in NCAA...).   From Elite Prospects (Dave I think wrote this):

A physical two-way defenceman that plays a structured competitive game. Smooth skating complements his ability to control the puck at higher speeds. Displays a pretty hard shot and crisp tape-to-tape passing ability, but is actually relied on more in the defensive zone. Battles very hard for puck possession and sees the game in lanes. Very strong positionally and is poised in his own end. As he continues to grow, he will become a more well-rounded defenceman with each game, as he recognizes and learns from his mistakes. Can play long shifts.
