Not exactly, I was thinking more on the lines of Vancouver vs Toronto or Montreal and Kelowna VS Windsor. Big cities vs Big cities and Smaller cities vs Smaller cities. Wait, how does the Lower-Mainland + Victoria-Saanich not respect the rest of BC?

It does. But it shouldn't to those who whine 'Ontario and Quebec dont care about us' because lower mainland + Victoria-Saanich to rest of BC is exactly the same as Ontario+ lower Quebec to rest of Canada = they make up most of the numbers, live in a tiny portion of the land they are representing and dont care about the rest.

Invy is nice. Lots of good golfing although the lake isn’t that great for wake surfing. But there’s a reason I only go there for holidays and not choose to spend 90% of my year there.

Tears of joy for finally being free of that pile of poop she lived in before. Hopefully she’s able to find herself a good man who able to provide for her and treat her with some respect instead of a lower class citizen unlike the drug dealers she’d be stuck choosing from in surrey.

Artistic events is how you define enjoyment. Haha I’ll take the less stress and more financial freedom over watching the meth addicts burn out in your front yard or what ever else you call you art.

You keep saying F350 like it’s a bad thing. But try pulling a boat, 5th wheel, snowmobile, or ATV in your Prius. For someone, who like your self, lives in close proximity to a ton of outdoor beauty, you sure don’t seem to like the idea of getting out and experiencing it.

Mean while you have a ton of posters on this board who’ve moved away and have nothing by great things to say about their experience. Extra income, better quality of life, not having to live next door to a crack house... you no all those things you don’t get to enjoy in surrey.

Since i moved to lower mainland, i got to know a lot of Persians. There's a saying in Farsi : " birds who've been brought up in a cage, think flying is a sickness". KingofSurrey is the perfect human representation of this.
I love this part of the world, but Surrey is a dump through and through. There are places in the third world i've been - not the super rich financial districts, just regular cities - where i'd prefer to live over Surrey.

Why do you think that is though? Our tax dollars pay for a lot of their infrastructure. How much tax dollars do western Canada pay to the Federal government and how much are we getting back versus that of Ontario and Quebec. Politicians tend to suck up to those two provinces most because they have the most seats in that province. So as of result things get fast tracked over there where Western Canada has not. Yet even though we pay Into the Federal government without getting much in return, Western cities are still thriving. Imagine where we could be if we got the same attenton as Ontario and Quebec?

Who cares. You are entitled to tax dollars being spent in your country. Nothing more. You don't see me whining about my tax dollars not being spent more on Kitsilano instead of Strathcona.
Politicians suck up to Ontario and Quebec nationally, because thats where most people are. Just like how politicians in BC like to suck up to lower mainland and victoria-Saanich because thats where most people are.

The only lines on the map that matter, are national boundaries. Its the line that controls your access to rest of the world, gives you rights, determines your political supervision. Rest of the lines are there ONLY to aid this entity- a nation- to function better. The moment those sub-national units start to work against the national interest, its time to erase those lines as they are defeating the purpose of it existing.

The moment we start whining about why my irrelevant line (province in this case) should matter, we approach zero sum game territory - because MY irrelevant line that is now relevant, is now around Kitsilano. Screw rest of Vancouver. Or better yet, the line around my block. Screw rest of Kits...or best yet, just the line around my property. Screw everything else.....see how devolving these irrelevant lines are ??

Humans are inherently selfish.  We will always put our personal best interests ahead of the whole.

Yeah. And our personal interests on a political scale, lie with the nation. Not the structures that are meaningless outside of helping this national unit function. Nimby-istic provincialism is not about self interest, its about being an idiot, thats all.

King the kicker in this discussion is where, those Albertsns who have money, choose to retire.  They come here.  And where do we go to retire?  We stay here.  Canadians retire to here, because it’s the best climate.

I'm not sure if they "don't care", I think they just "don't think" about us. I can't begin to point out how many times I've read something like "housing is completely unaffordable in BC".

Of course, it's unaffordable for most folks in the lower mainland, but I own a 5 bedroom, 2 bath 70s home, with a rec room, shop and a carport. If I put it on the market today, I'd be hoping to get around $300k.

The gist being, that the LM is BC. But those of us who live in other areas of the province beg to differ.

Yes. Best climate. Crappier everything else mostly. Less diversity than Ontario, less culture than Quebec, less ease of living than Alberta. And worse winters in my eyes. People make way too much about snow, but i grew up in a country that sees 45C in the summer and lived in Ontario for years. Give me the snowy, sunny -25 any day of the week over the depression inducing, sunlight starved west coast winter.

That’s you though.  The vast majority of people moving to another province to retire come here.  Yes, winters are wet, and when we get snow, it’s a slushy mess, but (mostly) it’s warm in winter, and not too hot in the summer.

Alberta is not just a manpower drain on BC. Its also a brain drain.

Engineers, nurses, doctors, teachers- they all leave BC to work in Alberta. Higher pay + lower taxes + way cheaper properties = Alberta life. Yes, they come back when they wanna retire and bake in the sun, but outside of software industry, BC loses more qualified people to Alberta than other way round.

I don't care for anecdotal evidence bud. I care for what statsCan says for employment. Alberta has more STEM employees than they graduate, BC is the opposite. Most engineers, doctors & nurses end up leaving lower mainland because of affordability issues - last week there was an article in the paper about six nurses resigning from BC Children's ward due to housing unaffordability and moving elsewhere.

You are kidding yourself if you think BC does not lose its highly qualified people to Alberta, where more STEM jobs are.

KOS...you seem to have a particular disdain for Alberta for some reason. You seem to want to paint the entire province of people as meth-using filthy redneck oil-patch workers. Would it be fair then to paint all persons living in BC as weed-smoking, tree-hugging, hippy douche-bags that think the only way to get from point A to B is either on a bicycle or in a Prius, who love to join unions so that they can protect their lazy-A$$ low work-ethic? No...that wouldn't be fair.

Facts: BOTH provinces have beautiful weather (which you would know if you actually LIVED in both places rather than just parrot some crap one of your pipeline protester buddies parroted to you one day). BOTH provinces have mostly wonderful people, have professional, intelligent workforces. BOTH provinces have gorgeous cities (think Victoria in BC and Calgary in Alberta)...and BOTH provinces have crap-hole cities (think Ft. McMurray in Alberta and...oh, I dunno, how about Surrey in BC for a good example).

Absolute BS. Albertans are the highest earners in Canada and by a significant amount. BC ranks 4th.

Alberta

Saskatchewan

Ontario

BC
