[Discussion] Time to trade Marky

Time has come to seriously consider trading Jacob Markstrom.  This is not a bash Marky rant but I do believe that the Canucks should cash in on his value now.

Recently Elliotte Friedman reported that DET were shopping Jimmy Howard and were asking for 1st round pick for him.  Howard has been a better goalie throughout his career than Marky, but he is 34 years old and has had a rash of injuries in recent years.  Marky is 28 yrs old and has been relatively injury free.

Canucks have depth in goaltending with Demko fit and playing in AHL again.  I would think that they will be looking to get him in Vancouver soon.  He is in his 3rd year in Utica and has nothing more to gain by playing in the minors.  DiPetrio looks like he may be another good goalie in the system and is probably 3 years away from the big time.

Markstrom is playing his best hockey since coming to Vancouver and has been putting up elite status numbers in the last 4 weeks.  His value has never been higher.

Looking around the league there are probably 10 teams that would benefit from acquiring Marky either because of injury or the fact that their goaltending has sucked all year.  CAR, NJD, ARI, CHI, DET, NYR, OTT, PHI and STL are all teams that need goaltending and are in the process of overhauling their rosters.  Most of these teams are sitting outside of a wild card spot but if they string together 4 wins in a row, they would make the post season, so none of them are completely out of the race. CBJ and VEG are competing teams that might look at Marky as a 1 and 1a this year and starter next year after Bobrovsky walks.

Now might also be time to consider trading Nilsson but his value is much lower than Marky's.

Lets stock pill some draft picks for the Vancouver NHL draft 2019 or see if we can't land a good young defenceman.  PHI, CAR and STL in particular are teams that have plenty of young dmen in their system.

Markstrom is 28yrs old, $3.6m cap hit until end 2019-20 season. Career NHL stats 198GP  2.83GGA  .908 PCT

There's nothing more demoralizing then not having a solid goalie.

So you want to deflate all the confidence and forward progress we've made just so that we can have a 2nd or 3rd round pick?  Detroit can ask for a 1st all they want, the price is set by the buyer.

Big fat NO from me.

This is not a video game or a fantasy league.  These are real people and trading Marky would send them a message that they're going to be wasting their careers in Vancouver since we don't care about winning.

No thanks.

kiss of death ??

ep40 is shown embracing marky at the end of the last game

both clearly appreciate and respect the performance of the other

but that is ep40's signal to management that it is time to move this player???

i saw similar response by ep40 to brock after a goal recently

does this mean brock might be on the block as well ?

ep40 is a canuck black widow ?

Well said,  I agree with this 100%. What a joke to even consider trading Markstrom.

Ya no. Nows the time to see what he has. Demko and DiPietro are great prospects but not guaranteed. Petey seems to love Marky too. Haha.

Now is when you pick which forwards we are going with and try to package up Sutter and Baer for picks imo.

Leivo trade home run style.

Why would we trade him? People really need to get it out of their minds that just because a player is on a roll doesn’t mean he has to be traded. That’s not how hockey works.

No kidding.  We finally have a goalie who looks like a legit #1 and somebody wants to trade him for a draft pick?

Markstrom is only 28, turning 29.  He could have another 5-7 years of great hockey left in him.  He could be our starter for many years to come...

Definitely not the time to trade Marky.  Demko and DiPi have not shown they are ready for the NHL yet.  D is close, but needs to show a consistent amount of time to even be the backup.  DiPi is a few years away.

This. We don't have a sturdy enough remaining crop of goaltenders to handle losing Marky. Nilsson is not a starting goalie and Demko is very close to ready for NHL time I think, but Utica will suffer and so will our team's morale. Trading away a winning goalie when spirits are high is the perfect way to destroy the morale of our team.

The opportunity cost is worth looking at. IF we keep Marky, and lets assume he really is a guy with a .910 sv% and under 3gaa, then we don't have to go out and sign a guy like Bobrovsky for huge bucks until Demko is ready to start. If we do trade Marky, then we do have to go sign a veteran starter but we maybe get a late 1st or 2nd rounder and a prospect.

Is a late 1st OR a 2nd + prospect worth the cost of having to sign Bobrovsky to a large contract? Probably not given how badly that could all go. You may end up with a bust pick and a huge goalie anchor contract.

But if we could actually get an overpayment like a 1st and an A prospect you'd have to consider it, and you could go after a Ryan Miller type situation on a 2 year overpayment for a guy like Howard or Elliot to fill the gap.

There's just a lot of potential downside and aging veterans involved in moving Marky now, and if he is still tradable for this value by the TDL then we have one hell of a deal on a starter at 3.67 mil for one more season.

It only makes sense to move Marky imo if some GM loses their mind temporarily and offers us a deal we can't refuse. Like Chiarelli offering their 1st and Puljujarvi.

This team is still rebuilding, they need more high end talent at forward and defence.

Markstrom's value may never be higher and he is not the goalie of the future. Remember this year a lot of posters were trade one of the two goalies, that is still true.

As good as the games have looked they are farther out of a playoff spot now than two wins ago.

With up to five more games played the standings and point comparisons mean nothing, St Louis could catch and surpass them.

There are teams on the bubble and needing to save jobs, goalies seem to becoming wanted, at least one's that are winning. Strike while the is iron is hot.
