I’m as big of a homer as you’ll find. Bleed blue and green. And I’m a big JB fan. But I’m just not sure that’s true. When you pick the first defencemen in the draft at fifth overall I think it’s safe to say you’re wanting a top pairing if not true number one D man. We’ve gone from that to “We still think he can be a top 4 D man”. Obviously I hope I’m incredibly wrong and OJ makes me look like a fool. But at the moment with what MT is doing in Calgary. It looks like that was the wrong pick.

Maybe Benning's trying to keep some pressure off of OJ given how brutal our media can be.  Manage expectations so if he hits his ceiling it's a pleasant surprise rather than let Botchford and co. crucify the kid when he makes the team and experiences some growing pains.

With MT there's no EP.

Good points fellas. Like I said. Hope I’m wrong

Or we could have ended up with Puljujarvi dropping and then we would have been really disappointed with his progress. His totals are similar to JV at this point. And coming from a guy who ripped up the world juniors a few years ago. Like you i am really hoping we got a stud coming in OJ and not a dud!

Always lots of talk about "Selling the Future", well why not "Buying the Future"?

If it is only through the draft then buying more picks by using existing assets and improving draft positions. These are positive ideas.

All I get out of these comments is "I am not going to do anything or take any chances". Although he should have many assets available for extra picks at the TDL, if not this season then the next draft.

Funny how Benning spent years mortgaging our future to chase a ridiculous fantasy (playoffs) - but, now, all of a sudden, he cares about the team's future???  I imagine Aquilini finally stopped pushing for the playoffs about a year ago.

It was Linden, he put the players ahead of the team, he was still too much the NHLPA president. That is why the Sedins were never asked about a TDL trade or any at all. "It would not be fair to them to tear it down", "should do what we can to give them a last shot"

My thoughts on what he said:

- I agree with the notion that the best thing for this team now is to feel success and get playoff experience, not lose more for a high pick.

- I'm thrilled to hear that Benning won't be mortgaging the future for a shot at the playoffs. This man gets it.

- Glad to see he's going to talk with Edler soon. I'm hoping for a new short- to mid-term contract (2-4 years)

- Interesting that he's most high on Sautner and Chatfield. I'm personally much higher on McEneny.

- Juolevi's development will definitely be stalled with this injury. He may need another year in Utica before making the NHL, which would be a disappointment.

- Kole Lind has done well in Utica lately, but was developing very slowly prior to recent games. I'm much lower on him than I used to be. Interesting to see that Jim is still hyped about him.

I've heard Alex Auld and Trent Cull both say a lot of young players need a few month adjustment period (October to December) and pick up their offensive game come January or February when they first get to the AHL. They said this is especially true for those with late draft year birthdays (those who can play in the AHL in their D+2). So I'm glad to see Lind it tracking along there exactly as they expected. Gadjovich, however, I'm not so sure about.

Agreed, if OJ turns into a calm, minute eating #3 D-man, I think that is a huge win. MT is MT but at the end of the day would prefer to pay EP and Boeser big money and support him with solid players.

Yeah, it sucks we don't have guys like Horvat, Petterson , Boeser, Virtanen, Hughes, Demko, Woo, Madden, DiPietro, Juolevi .  Why did he have to throw all of that away in a futile attempt to make the playoffs.

No surprises there.

Cole's notes:

Not buyers.

Stay the course.

If anything the surprise is that he has the gut and balls to stay the course and not get dragged into the EP and Boeser Hype.

So damned happy with Benning.

As for other deals that could be made, Benning hinted that a swap of young players could be in the cards.

“If there’s a hockey deal to do for one of our younger players, I’m not going to say our prospects, but a player we have on our team for a different look, a player on another team that we think is going to help us, we’ll look at something like that.”

He may be alluding to Nikolay Goldobin. The 23-year-old doesn’t qualify as a “prospect” anymore, and the head coach doesn’t seem fond of the way he plays. If there’s a player of a similar age available for Goldobin, particularly one with a more well-rounded game, based on those comments, Benning may be considering pulling the trigger.

Couldn't find a tweet from the interview on Sportsnet but I found it here instead.

Could be a mix of Goldobin, Hutton, Stecher, Virtanen, Leivo, Motte, Gaunce, Pouliot that he is alluding to.

Firstly, I wouldn’t include Jake on this list.  Jake, when playing well, impacts a game way more than these others can.  What would we expect back though, another Granlund-like player?  I like Granlund’s usefulness, but (IMO) we already have enough of his level of player.  Maybe Hutton for an upgrade at forward, but (really) what will he return?  I think this level of trade makes little to no improvement to our future Cup chances, unless we get back draft picks.  Yes, picks in the later rounds (which is the best these guys will return - excluding Virtanen) have little chance of becoming impact players, but what are the chances any guy we get in return will be?
