Amazed they got that much out of them TBH. It's pretty common knowledge he was almost certainly signing with them anyway...

He would have had to wait another year.  He was going to be a free agent only in August 2020.  Now he can play for them next season.

The NHL needs to change this rule, college players should not be treated any differently than junior or European draft picks.

they must know he's willing to ditch his last year of school if the cost was that high.

Euro and Junio players can escape the teams that drafted them as well if they wait long enough.  It just doesn’t happen often. The CBA talks about it, the rules are complicated.

I think some of the blame is on the NCAA not allowing players to sign contracts.

Pay your ncaa football players

Allow hockey players to sign sliding contracts like the CHL.

Problem solved?

I just don’t think it is a problem.  If you are drafted, the team owns exclusive rights to you for four years whether you are in the CHL, Europe, or NCAA.

That is a big enough window to own a person’s future.  Players rarely give up years of earnings and later free agency just to avoid signing with a certain team. If they feel strongly enough and are willing to give that all up... then they should be allowed to.

Two years for the CHL - by 1 June and the player then re-enters the draft.

4 years for the Euro leagues where there is an agreement (eg SHL, Liiga) but indefinite in the ones where there isn't (KHL, LNA)
