Nuxfanabroad
Go back to the 1930's(Depression era). Although pro sport wasn't nearly as developed, there are patterns which bear similarity. Big dynasties & mega-personalities(like Yanks & Babe Ruth) can make a pleasant diversion, if a system is in tatters. Wouldn't be surprised if big Gov were ever guilty of issuing 'directives'/advice to how a pro sport might be run. As it spreads to various regions & the $$$$$$$$$$$ numbers go exponential, it's inevitable more fingers will poke/grub into the pie.
the grinder
the media is all about the money , the more crap they spew hopefully the more crap you will buy simple it all about advertisement , that's why reporters ask stupid questions get a coach manager player blowing up at a reporter , that's viewership gold more views the more people view ads , that's why there are so many guys playing sports reporter on you tube hopefully make a few bucks spewing nonsense from watching sportsnet tsn or whatever , besides that im sure most media snoop around here looking for stories anyways lol
Sygvard
I don't find sports Media to be any more silly than the sports themselves. Which is to say, both are very silly, but I don't mind watching them anyways. You are entirely correct that almost all sports journalism, interviews, and articles are absolute fluff. Mostly fabricated time filling narrative creation. But it isn't like there is some deeper sports related hidden story that they are MISSING most of the time. We are paying money to watch sweaty men hit a rubber disc with sticks. It is inherently goofy as heck. It's a children game. But for whatever reason, I really enjoy watching the children's game. I don't begrudge the media covering the game for sounding silly as they try turn it into some compelling/cohesive narrative. Plus, the game is less fun if you follow it in awkward silence without commentary/interviews/articles. I would just not take any of them too seriously. At what point does this 'necessary evil' become needless, obnoxious drivel?
Coconuts
I don't pay attention to most of the talking heads. Hell, even the locals can be pretty bad. I'm not a fan of sensationalist sports reporting and I don't care about the rumour mill if it's not coming from those who've proven themselves to be mostly credible. I don't need the jabs or the stupid little quips (like the one on the first page regarding DiPietro) and I certainly don't care about the twitter banter most NHL teams try to put out. Most of it's pretty cringe. I get that they're trying to engage fans but I'm not into it. I don't trust the NHL to get things right, I don't trust Bettman and his cronies and I don't trust the state of NHL reffing. I suppose my not taking the media all that seriously is just part of the package. I find more interesting discussion and takes on CDC than anywhere else. Anything worth reading or knowing about usually filters through here anyway.

Nuxfanabroad
Oh, I know..that NuxFan is SUCH a sh*t-disturber eh? ..Yeah, I've had a few bosses tell me that :^) & I have burned some bridges past. No angel, it's very true. Posters fly into these kinda threads that I've just needled(to sew up some loose ends), pestering me, "Why do ya even watch the game then?!" Just take yer toys, & get outa' our sand box! I think a few of these posters originate from that other super-duper(indispensible?) nation. The one that does so well in PO's & draft lottos. As our Cdn sporting websites write Dramatic headlines(cos that's about all I skim nowadays) of what whichever Cdn team in question MUST do, or the end of the world is nigh; they even have the temerity & bloody gall to complain about aging Cdn arenas, as they push their diluted puck-hokey in the 80-90% empty, tropical locales. Oh yeah, their bldgs fill up at season-end, after our rev sharing help their disinterested market make an unlikely run. I drank their F***in' koolaid, until about my mid-20's. I wish a few guys older than myself, had given me advice to get active, don't waste so much time/$ & passion on this rigged roulette wheel. Do sports, hobbies & chase down some romance. Stop living vicariously through societal elites that might make 400 mill throwin a ball, or a 100 mill, whacking a disc with some wood. If even ONE young person mulls this over, I'm pleased. This league's a ruse, & we're mostly disillusioned junkies! At the very least, save the dedication until you have a nasty boss & persistent Missus naggin at ya, & a couple decades of silly misdeeds to reflect upon. But be warned..tomorra' the bast*rds will try to pkg/sell you NOSTALGIA before you even got to experience the original thrill.

Everything is done to make a profit. People watch hockey because they enjoy it, it's not really that complicated. I'm sure many hockey fans do sports, hobbies, and chase romance, while still enjoying all aspects of the sport. I have been traveling for a few years, and haven't really been watching too many Canucks games. I still keep tabs through CDC and the rumour mills. It doesn't mean that I'm disillusioned. It just means that I enjoy sitting back and watching a sport that I've loved since I was a kid. I don't put any of my money into the NHL, I just enjoy the game for what it is, which is entertainment. I understand that you may have had some grand epiphany that not everything is what it seems, but once you fully get to the other side, you'll realize that nothing really matters, and you should do what you want with the time you have. There's no need to make judgment calls on other people liking the sport, even with all the media crap. They are spending their time doing what they want, which is watching the best sport on television.

If all sports fans maintained your balanced view, we likely wouldn't have 100 mill contracts being doled out. Haven't lived in NA for two decades, so don't know precisely..but it seems sports-obsession is in perpetual-growth mode(maybe cos flicks & tunes are so bloody lousy now too?!) Ah well, supply & demand some will say. Will state what I've said here before, that the game means more to Cdns than most things we can think of. They DESERVE a fair, level playing field..& I do think that's been shipped down the river. Big $ can **** things up.

Twilight Sparkle
honestly you just try way to hard to be an edgelord here and just expecting people to automatically agree with you, just because you're a canucks fan, but apply narratives of european league drama (ei: officiating) to what you think is going on in the NHL from jabronis in local media, and assume, yep this league is corrupt (vegas isn't in the top 5) because these are the stories of the referees that you all choose to follow, because they don't have a face in media like everyone else, except through the media if you want to know what the NHL is trying to really hide and the "corruption" and what the "media is hiding", follow daniel carcillo, and the "underground CTE brigade". he's one of the last few, alive, who can call out this league, and the nfl, for what it is, but we'll all still watch, and view as entertainment, because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter how much of a good person you think you are, you see someone getting hurt as entertainment and part of the show, or if you're on the other side, the price they pay, and thus fall in to what the media feeds off a storyline. it doesn't matter if you used to play, coach, whatever, we're all guilty of a bias. don't even try to convince me other wise with a 2019 pc answer because hockey culture is behind the times, but on tv, we're doing so much good. fighting is down, yay! then you follow people who the league and the nfl, and wwe (yes, wrestling cte is real) withheld information for tv ratings kinda gives you a different perspective, and whether you want to spend thousands of dollars to get your child into a sport such as that Edited May 5, 2019 by Twilight Sparkle
Hairy Kneel
Watching pressers league wide, I've noticed that coaches don't kow tow to reporters as much. ie not taking as much crap idiotic questions. Scott Oake for example. Torts as usual. The lone stand out for me was SportsPage. It was fresh and didn't dumb down the coverage but keeping it fan fun and accessible. Not formal and stuffy.. We need another fresh SportsPage crew, because ours have all been co-opted.
aqua59
There's too much media coverage in everything not just sports. You have to take it with a grain of salt.

hlinkas wrister
Sports reporting has (and frankly always has had) the ethical standards of entertainment reporting. If you ever thought otherwise, you deserve the disappointment that's eventually coming your way.
