question about NMC

If a player signed with team A that he has a NMC in his contract. And he agreed to be traded to team B.

will his NMC still be effective with team B or just lost his NMC privilege?

Quote
  • The clause can travel with the player even if he consents to being traded or is claimed on waivers
    • This requires that the acquiring team sign an addendum to the contract ensuring that the clause does in fact travel with the player (written by the player's agent)
    • If the acquiring team refuses to sign the addendum, and the player waives his clause anyway, at that point the clause may be nullified
  • If the player is traded before the clause takes effect, the acquiring team can opt to void the clause

Good question.

But in the next CBA there should be a criteria in place to have a player qualify by the amount of games played or years signed at a pro level before you can sign a NMC.

To prevent a Mike Gillis garage sale of NMC.

Actually I think the only NMCs Gillis handed out was to the Sedins.  Tough to argue against those as both of them won the Art Ross trophy during the time the NMCs were in effect.

Benning actually gave a NMC to Eriksson.  Thankfully, it was only for the first two years of his deal.

Gillis use of NTCs & NMCs tend to get overblown.  His problems were drafting & waited WAY too long before trying to overhaul the amateur scouting department.

NMCs are only possible on UFA years and not on the RFA ones.

Well the cap on term has already helped with that. Not sure if the NHLPA will be on board with a set number of years needed to have an NMC/NTC.

But you can't rebuild quickly when your most valued assets all have NTC's and NMC's.
