China Responsible For Surge In Ozone Depleting Emissions Say Study

China is to blame for much of the increase in illegal ozone-depleting substances (ODS) since 2013, according to a study published by the journal Nature on Thursday, with domestic companies accused of violating a global production ban.

About 40 to 60 per cent of the global rise in the prohibited ozone-destroying refrigerant trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11) since 2013 could be attributed to the industrial provinces of Shandong and Hebei in northern China, researchers from Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Britain's University of Bristol said.

After studying atmospheric data from South Korea and Japan, they estimated CFC-11 emissions from eastern mainland China during the 2014-17 period were around seven million kilograms per year higher than they were from 2008 to 2012.

CFC-11, once used in refrigerators and air conditioners, is one of the chemicals banned under the Montreal Protocol, a treaty to protect the earth's ozone layer by phasing out all global CFC production by 2010. CFC-11 in the atmosphere declined substantially until 2012, but has since rebounded.

China ratified the treaty in 1991 and said last year it has already eliminated as much as 280,000 tonnes of annual ODS production capacity and was speeding up efforts to phase out other ozone-damaging chemicals.

But a report last year by the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) claimed that dozens of Chinese companies were still using the banned CFC-11 in the production of polyurethane foam.

"Because it's very effective at what it does, however, there have been rogue users of old supplies and rogue producers who flout international agreements that their governments have signed up to," said Ian Rae at the University of Melbourne's school of chemistry, who was a technical adviser to the Montreal Protocol.

China launched a special campaign to inspect 3,000 foam manufacturers across the country last year and promised to punish any violations of the Montreal treaty. It said in March that, as part of the crackdown, it had shut down two manufacturing spots that produced CFC-11.

the propaganda campaign against china continues.

out of nowhere all American media left right and center have gone on a china bashing. its amazing how left and right media in the US that cant agree on ANYTHING have virtually identical foreign policies and follow the American government line to the T on it..

MSNBC CNN and FOX don't agree on anything domestic, but have identical foreign policies. Trump was right about the fake news.  its just all mainstream media in the "west" is fake news.

The US is mad because they expected china to be their slave labour. but China quietly advanced on the technology front, and absolutely shocked the americans with its 5G prowess and work already started on 6G. the US is terrified it will lose the technology war and is lashing out instead of adapting and trying to play the game better. and everyone is going to suffer because of this American insecurity.

Give me a break. China is simply disgusting. I know, I lived there on and off for 8 years. It's everything the "propaganda" says and much worse.

Well and good lowering emissions and such, but you might as well piss all that effort into the wind unless china and russia both hop on board.

That was from the Bill Nye thread.

Humans are greedy and self serving. Why does food go to waste in north america, yet people in africa starve? Why do we impose tariffs,  negotiate trade agreements, stab our friend in the back to get a $1 raise and a promotion?

You two are painting it out like china and india are “paving the way to magical unicorn fart land and farts smell good so north america should be the ones who make the farts and set the price”.

dont be naive.

Also in the Bill Nye thread, where two people, who shall go unnamed for the purposes of this thread, were saying something along the lines of “But China and India are becoming the leaders in alternative energy sources”.

The ironing, is definately flat out delicious.

China and India are also responsible for 80% of all the plastics in the ocean. Most of it comes from the crap they dump in their rivers.

Preaching to the choir buddy. Here north america is taxing emissions and taking garbage back from phillipines, that canada as a country had nothing to do with, yet still is and going to take care of it as eco-friendly as possible.

Their neighbours on the other hand....

I wonder how many canadian dollars, fairly earned by filipinos i admit, end up in the Phillipines?

No they're not, don't spread lies when you don't know the real truth.

Enlighten yourself, the US alone contributes most of the plastic waste from commercial to industrial use.

This is extremely unfortunate and negates the production of alternative energy sources that they have been proliferating. Those saying that China is becoming technologically superior are kidding themselves if they choose to manufacture chemicals that destroy a portion of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Much like China supposedly cracked down on the hunting of tigers in the wild by supporting privatized tiger farms in Laos.

Wrong:

Did you even glance at the study? Understand the data?  I did.

You looked at plastic waste by country and found a big red X across the US.

I looked at mismanaged plastic waste and noticed the whole of asia and africa were disgustingly high.

If countries can't be environmentally friendly, then you can't buy from them.  Otherwise it'll be another race to the bottom environmentally speaking and we'll ALL be worse off.  Capitalism works great for a lot of things, but a fatal flaw of it that simply must be addressed is its lack of taking the environment into account.  (and before this turns into a socialism/communism/etc debate, no, those ideologies don't do enough for the environment either)

Do you seriously believe this? Your whole rant aside, you believe China isnt the single main contributor to the worlds pollution, not to mention its population? Those two things go hand in hand.

This is propaganda to you?

*CBC wrote the OPs article as well, not “America”.

*WTF does 5g and 6g have to do with pollution? Or population?

I am speaking English, and you are speaking Swahili my friend.

Its about geopolitics.  Not pollution, not human rights, not uigurs, not defecits not anything else but geopolitics .

China has almost caught up to the western world in tech (and in some places has passed).  This has been a shocking development.  Obama had a more sophistacted approach of setting up the TPP and dealing with China as a collective lead by the US.  Thereby forcing them to comply without humiliation.

TRump has taken the hammer to the fly approach.  has gone full "America first" and expects to individually bully and intimidate countries into submission. this hasn't gone over well anywhere.
