[Proposal] VAN-TOR (Weaponizing Cap Space)

Recommended Posts

To VAN: Marleau, TOR 2019 2nd (#53 overall)

To TOR: Future Considerations

Vancouver was unable to acquire extra draft picks at the deadline due to a lack of expendable valued assets and this is an alternative way of adding a high pick while weaponizing our cap space and only taking on a contract for 1 year.

Toronto is able to get rid of Marleau's contract which gives them extra cap space to work with.

They'd need to offer more than simply a 2nd imo.

Not just because of Marleau's contract,  but because we would be doing them an ENORMOUS solid essentially enabling them to keep their core together.

This isn't just a cap-dump situation like has been done many times in the past - for TO it's about keeping a 22yo hometown franchise player in their organization for the better part of the next decade.

Surely that's worth more than a throw-in 2nd if you ask me.

This. Needs to be something like Sandin or Liljegren, or something on that value level. Anything less we shouldn’t consider it imo.

What would you propose then?

No way. Moving Marleau would allow them to sign all their big name RFAs. It would be trading a 2nd for Mitch Marner essentially. If they want cap help, they can give us a top prospect or 2 or future 1sts.

I hope nobody in the league offers that kind of discount to the Leafs.

Toronto doesn't have much in the way of prospects outside of Sandin.  Kapanen would be a decent value.  Otherwise, it should cost the Leafs their next 2 2nds.

The whole point is Toronto is trying to free up cap space. Canucks can afford his contract. I would rather ask for a big return with picks

Simply not worth it if the Canucks take on yet another contract with nothing being offloaded. Canucks already have 4 too many forwards and need to get rid of some of they’re own bad contracts themselves

We can afford his contract and it is only until next year. We do not need to offload another contract. That will only hurt the value we recieve in return

I would be really surprised if Toronto even considers this an option in the end to be honest. Marleau's still a servicable vet for a team and not just a cap dump. Toronto's likely to get something back for him and, even a 7th round pick would be better than having to give up a 2nd rounder.

However, Horton's contract might work with this and would even be a little less money. He's also only 1 year left similar to Marleau.

So just for the flip side of this...…...this trade has been suggested on HF boards

Toronto fans claim Marleau still has value at 50% retained, so they are expecting something back, lol

As in Picks,,,,,,,,,lol

That eastern-biased, BS narrative is a laughably outdated, twisted, communication-contraption. I picture every lost poster as a lil' hamster-on-wheel, doomed to running endlessly, extending futile hopes of propping up their diminishing energy/unforgivable roster-fantasies.

Such images make that site tolerable!

And there's a similar bias on this board. ;)

Most likely scenario? It'll be in the middle somewhere.
