Friedman on Edler:

According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Alex Edler and the Vancouver Canucks are going through some tough contract negotiations and it appears the Swedish defenseman would like to move on from the only team he's ever known.

Friedman mentioned the issue is the Canucks would like to sign him to a contract that opens him up for the expansion draft once Seattle is ready to choose players, and even though it would be a short trip south for the Swede from Vancouver, Edler is not interested in playing for Seattle.

The 33-year-old Edler has spent his entire 12 year career in Western Canada, and has 368 points in 814 career NHL games. Friedman went on to mention he sees San Jose as a potential fit.

How are we feeling Canucks fans?

Is this for real?

If that is what Edler wants to do then why handcuff the Canucks @ TD? relationships work both ways and it sounds like Edler is demanding and not negotiating. If the deal is not right for the team moving forward then say goodbye to Edler and understand, wanting to stay in Vancouver is NOT important to him

So is there an actual credible link to this? where did Friedman supposedly say this?

If true and Eddy gets the contract he wants elsewhere I'd be happy for him tbh, he's given his all here.

Would love to see Edler back but hes exposed all his cards.

2 trade deadlines hes said he doesnt want to go anywhere and wants to stay in Vancouver, doesnt want to play for any other team.

Well when that's the case then you dont get to make demands when contract time is up.  Benning has his where he wants them.  Sign the contract offered,  or leave the franchise like you didnt want to do.  Those are the choices.

Edler wants to be here; the Canucks want Edler here.

Edler wants a full NMC; the Canucks do not want to have to protect him in the expansion draft.

Edler wants a long-term deal; the Canucks do not.

Edler wants the big bucks; the Canucks know he only wants to play for Vancouver.

IMO, he should be offered:

Either a 2 year contract with a full NMC for around 5 or 6 million per or,

A 4 year contract with a No Trade Clause for around 4 or 5 million per.

If he opts for the 2 year, he could still re-sign with the Canucks after the expansion draft.

Edler earned his NMC on his last contract and the Canucks have honoured it.

Since he doesn't want to play for any other team, he has lost bargaining power.

The Canucks need his services and should pay a fair dollar but not the maximum UFAs get.

They don't want to 'waste' a protection spot on a 35 year old defenseman.

Well thought out solution to the situation. Give him 2 years, full NMC, but ask him to agree the he will waive it for the expansion draft. Seattle, knowing that he isn't interested in signing down there will pass him by, and he resigns here after the draft for another year, if he's still feeling like he wants to keep playing.

I am a bit po'ed that Edler wouldn't waive his NTC to go play somewhere else for a couple months or less and get a good return back to help this team in the long run and then he expects the team to meet every demand for him to stay in Vancouver. The reality is that if he were exposed in an expansion draft, Seattle wouldn't be picking an old defenseman, they would be looking for more of an up and comer.

Seems like he is hurting the team more than help it, I say set him loose and we can move on and look for some free agents to sign instead.

Was Edler even asked to waive at the deadline?  Shouldn't we have known we would have issues signing him?  If he's not going to stay, he should of been moved

There were several reports of different offers for him but he refused to waive.

Would have been done by now if it was going to be signed (probably). He will leave a big hole but he's been injured a lot the last few seasons, and he has lost a couple steps. I won't miss those stiff leg Frankenedler fall downs in the corner myself. But he has set the franchise records for D in nearly every meaningful category, so he should be proud of what he has done and we can thank him the next time he plays here.  Ring of Honor player for sure.
