I don't know. Never say never, but if one of the reasons teams (and the Jets are shopping Ehlers) is because how friendly his cap hit is, the exact opposite would apply to Laine.

Right now, and probably for the rest of his career, Laine is not a sound player defensively. He's not as bad as people have said, as he was one of the better Jets in the playoffs this year, and was good defensively. However, he doesn't have the speed of an Ehlers to "jet" back into his own zone.

But, even though he'll cost $9M-$10M to extend long term, there's the "It" factor of having a player like him on your club, which is why the Jets will keep him, and also why other teams (regardless of the contract) would also pay through the nose to get him. That other factor, aside from the the obvious ones (ie: shot, PP, goals), is that he puts butts in seats and his name sells jersey's. At the end of the day, only one team wins the Stanley Cup, so the odds aren't in any club's favor that "This will be the year." So GMs knowing that, while wanting to put a competitive enough product on the ice to make it to the playoffs, also know that the season is 82 games long. How to do you get fans to show up to game 51 and buy merchandise, especially when the team isn't firing on all cylinders? I'll tell ya, for years, that's why I've gone to Jets games. Even when they've crapped the bed, I know that at the very least, Byfuglien will do something that will make it worth my money. I'd wager that's why they don't trade Patrik Laine. He does the same thing. You pay attention when he's on the ice, and he'll sell jerseys. As talented as Ehlers is, as responsible as he is defensively, and as nice as his contract is, he doesn't have that "It" factor.

Ditto, Ehlers reminds me of a talented player that will end up playing for a few teams by the time he retires.   A few bright sides with Virtanens' slow development, is that he is still young, can be signed at a cheaper deal while he continue his developement with the Canucks.

People who don’t watch the Jets, or Ehlers regularly, think he’s a one dimensional player, which he certainly isn’t. The guy not only has elite skill and skating, but he’s very reliable defensively.

The reason why the Jets are actually shopping him is because his contract is so attractive to teams looking for a player like him.

This.

I found it became redundant the amount of times I heard Ehlers is one dimensional. Ten out of ten times I'm putting him on the ice in a last minute situation to preserve a lead.

In 21 playoff games so far he has 0 goals and 7 assists.  That alone might limit the suitors (which could work in our favour at this stage of the rebuild)

It may be a bit of a deterrent but, he's young, cheap and packed full of talent. If Dougie Hamilton is named that's being mentioned in rumours there is definitely value there.

I meant that it's a good thing if we happen to be kicking the tires on him.  Current contenders might be deterred by his PO stats, lowering the asking price a bit.

But our young team is looking to grow through PO experience (soon hopefully).

Interesting. Ehlers had a rough year last year and it could be a buy low situation. Always liked Ehlers and he would look good in our top six. Something around Ehlers and Tanev maybe? If we could somehow pull that off and add Meyers to replace Tanev that's a nice upgrade of the team.

Ehlers isn’t going for Tanev. They’ll want at least the 10th pick as well as something else.

Kind of ironic that when Winnipeg says they want to 'win now' - they then look immediately at who they can get rid of in order to win now and it's Ehlers.   I know there's other factors in play but it's not a ringing endorsement of this player imo.

Lol so now Ehlers is being moved (doesn't produce when it counts but is paid to), Little Willie is an overpaid poofter who doesn't compete when it gets hard and same as ehlers and worse has put his team in a cap bind, and people complain about Jake LOL....I can't wait for this team to make the playoffs and all the haters say, damn! I am sure glad we picked Jake! lol

All that said. I would prefer Ehlers over Willie Nylander.

for sure, but I still believe, when its all said and done, Jake will have a bigger impact on this team in the playoffs than either of those two, and I actually wanted Ehlers on draft day....

Not Tanev alone of course. No team is giving up a top 20 pick for Ehlers. He has been shooting blanks in the playoffs and is coming off a bad season. There is a reason he is being offered up.

A first round pick is probably what the Jets are looking at for Ehlers though. Can’t just be based off of playoffs though right? His regular season counts too, no?

Im hoping that Virtanen breaks out in a big way this coming season. I agree with most posters that physically he’s built for the playoffs. Whereas Ehlers and Nylander just kinda disappear when the postseason comes around.

We’ll see I guess. Team hasn’t made the playoffs yet. But I’m hopeful as you are! Ehlers would be a fine addition to the Canucks. But what would the asking price be?
