True... but now he only needs 1 or 2 dmen instead of 2 or 3. one less blank to fill in.... brilliant deal. 1

Higher cap for shorter term and we can figure out the expansion crap later. Welcome back Eagle! Benning and co did great and Edler cooperated. I'm calling that a win for management. I've lost some respect for Dhaliwal the last few days though. Yeah, Dhaliwal is a drama queen and getting to Pratt-like levels of dumbness. Just listening to the guy costs you some brain cells. 1
Provost
Higher cap hit and shorter term. Exactly as hoped for. A series of 1 year contracts after that If he still has the interest and gas in the tank.

3rdGenCanuck
NMC or full NTC? Haven't seen anything reported on that yet. Think its safe to assume with a deal like that he probably has full trade protection.
nuck-lifer
Great Job GMJB! Now they can focus on either a Tanev trade to upgrade the right side with some offense, or sign a top 4 UFA. On top of that sign Luke Schenn and we're looking pretty good Edler - RD UFA or Tanev upgrade Hughes- Tanev Hutton- Stecher Joulevi - Schenn Sautner- Biega Depth....

I dont mind if there's an NMC in this deal since its not a big deal when it comes to expansion draft exposure. yes - but when you think about it, even where Edler's best interests are concerned, if he wants to stay in Vancouver, this way he is not vulnerable to the expansion draft - so he's free to re-sign here and neither require protection, nor take the risk of having to spend a year or two in Seattle or whereever they may have elected to deal him if the selected him. 2 years in the end may be preferable to Edler - it also inches up his cap hit (although he still took a discount) - and he maintains control over his future. 6
Boudrias
Benning retained the vet he needed to now he can move Tanev out. Sign a serviceable RD to replace Tanev. Play Edler, Hutton, Stecher and Hughes on the PP. Bring Joulevi up by X-Mass. Sign Schenn and rotate existing d-man prospects through the roster to see how they progress. Build towards 3 years out. zombieksa
Edler should easily hit 900gp and 400pts with this contract. Pad those "best d in history" stats boi! Welcome back Eagle! 1 2

Popular Post oldnews
I think his role / or at least the need for him to produce as much as he did last year, will probably ease off a bit with youth assuming some of the scoring role / powerplay quarterbacking = Hughes will probably result in Edler's production inching down somewhat, although you never know - as an improved Canucks team could result in Edler sustaining his production given the quality of players on the ice with him.... In any event, although I think his role may lean more towards shutdown/matchup in the future, which may have made an alternative, more stay-at-home veteran placeholder easier to accept had Edler decided to move on - he still represents a huge boost to the team in two senses - he's probably a better defensive blueliner than anyone in UFA - and at the same time, he still brings that two way element where he can produce offense even while being a workhorse. There may have been veteran defensive placeholder options, but none of them capable of putting up putting up 34 pts in 56 games. For all the talk of Gardiner, he is a far, far worse defenseman, his production was nevertheless less than Edler's last year, and by most 'rumours' will be expecting a 7x7 type deal - an absolute absurdity relative to what Edler just signed for (and perhaps as ironically, a lot of posters here advocating to sign Gardiner are some of Benning's biggest, loudest, most outspoken critics). 4

I always thought that this was the best way to get around the expansion draft and made the most sense for everyone. Added bonus that this expires at the same time Petty and Hughes new contracts will kick in. Just works for everyone.
BlueDragon23
Excellent news! Great deal for both sides. I hope all of you who were whining that Eagle was “done” in Van and that he “didn’t care” about the team before... well I hope this signing makes you regret ever thinking that. Eagle just proved how much he loves this team and wants to stay. He could have made way more in the open market with a longer term contract but instead he took a discount and shorter term to stay with us. True showing of great character. Love ya Eagle. I’m glad I have your number on my back!
