Jake has had some decent shifts playing on his offside and Pod naturally shooting left off the RW, could be good? I've been wanting Jake to be put on the LW for years. Think he'd work better with EP40 than Bo. 1

JoshuaGuy
So Pod is 6'1"? In two videos with Hughes, they look similar in height. Did Hughes grow?

kloubek
I like the pick. I didn't want a "safe" pick anyway; at this point, we need stars.

canuckledraggin
33 minutes ago, GoldenAlien said: Another thing to keep in mind: Hughes and EP40 are Oct/Nov birthdays who were turning 19 the year that they were drafted. Podkolzin is still 17 for a few more days and is one of the younger guys in his draft. That means if Podkolzin was drafted in 2020 instead, he would be four months older than Hughes was when he got drafted. If Podkolzin plays two more seasons in the KHL then make the jump around March 2021 once his season is over, he would've made the NHL as a 19 year old who's turning 20 -- same as Hughes this year. EP40 made his debut a month before his 20th birthday. Boeser played two years of college hockey after the draft and made the NHL a month after he turned 20. So Podkolzin isn't behind our other young guns if he takes two years. It almost seems as though this has been a strategy going into the draft. It likely has nothing to do with their selections, but Virtanen and Juolevi were also 17 year old picks.

The fact he has two years on contract is not a worry what so ever, we will need good young talent on ELCs when we are ready to contend. ... 3 hours ago, Warhippy said: I will say this right now. And PRAY the curse of the Canucks drafting Russians is broken... 3 hours ago, Brock Botanen said: Tryamkin is loving this 3 hours ago, Provost said: Ballsy of Jim. He may no longer have the job when this kid comes over. High risk, high reward. ... I am sure lots of other people have the same reactions as me. 1. When we got past #8 and Zegras was still available I was hoping he would still be there at #10 for the Canucks to take. From the looks on the faces of the Canuck group I bet they were thinking the same thing. 2. I was wondering if the Canucks could pass on Podkolzin at #10. He was obviously the highest rated and no doubt the most talented player available, but the Russian factor is a genuine risk. 3. With Krebs, Soderstrom, Boldy, Caufield and Newhook all still available, I thought the Canucks might trade down. I would have been delighted to trade down and get Krebs or Newhook at 14 or 15 or 16 and maybe get an extra 2nd round pick. 4. It is too bad that Podkolzin is signed in Russia for the next two years. In the last few years we have seen Hughes make a late appearance in his draft+1 year, EP be the best player on the team in his draft+2 year, and Boeser make an impressive late season showing in his draft+2 year. Podkolzin won't be around until his draft+3 year. But, hey, he might be another Calder candidate when he does show up. 5. It was a bit alarming to hear him do his interview through a translator. Reminds me of Tryamkin. 6. But, overall, I can't complain about this pick. He could be the steal of the draft. And i have to respect Benning for making this pick. 7. At least he will be in the World Juniors for the next two years. Edited June 22, 2019 by JamesB 3

prix57
Interesting pick for sure hope he pans out for us. Just worried about the Russian factor, hope he crosses the pond and makes the team. I also hope this means Tryamkin is coming back.
