Which is why I didn't care about him not being in the AHL or CHL. Kid is pretty ready. Let him mature and finish becoming a man at home. Which is perfectly reasonable. And we get him starting his elc (and at elc dollars) when he is a man. That’s huge in a cap system to have guys on their elc dollars contributing. 1

If I had to guess management wanted Zegras or Podkolzin. In that order. They probably backed out of a deal to move up when they caught wind Edmonton and Detroit were coveting D-men. It meant that one of if not both of them would be available at their pick. Maybe I am giving them too much credit but it makes sense when you think about it.

Absolutely. 2 years in the KHL against men will do great things for his development. I didnt even have this kid on my radar just due to the fact this isn't a typical Canucks pick. We ALWAYS pass over these ultra skilled Russians. Glad that seems to be changing under Jimbos watch.
DeNiro
Right now we're talking about 17 year old kids. Even the best scouts in the world can't predict what these guys will become. Maybe we lucked out and got the better player, maybe we didn't. Time will tell. 1

Looking forward to seeing him playing hard night in and night out for the canucks, making teams that passed on him look foolish come playoff time. I like Boldy's overall game a lot, and I think he will fit in well in Minnesota, but Podz has a pretty comparable skillset with way more tenacity and grit. We chose the sandpaper and I am totally fine with that. 1

BlueDragon23
Crazy thing is that he is only 17. Younger than most. He has the potential to surpass some players drafted above him. Seems like a Big, strong power forward with speed. Big time Competitor too. This could be the steal of the draft!

The greatest Russian players, and their young guys’ biggest heroes play (or played) here. Pod is a hyper compete guy, who wants to follow in the footsteps of his Russian heroes. He’s playing here. 1

KHL has a salary cap of $14 million for an entire team. He'll make comparable money on an ELC here than he would there, with much more potential for growth. https://en.khl.ru/news/2019/03/27/436784.html
SilentSam
Interesting to note that the KHL has 3 teams so far this season that are converting to NHL size rinks.

nergish
The boy will need to learn English ASAP! But this ain't no Nichuskin. He will play. His ceiling is yet to be determined, and that's the fun part. Let's see Dorofeyev tomorrow. We've been desperately lacking in the Russian department for years.
Popular Post Generational.EP40
https://thehockeywriters.com/vasili-podkolzin-2019-nhl-draft-prospect-profile/ “ Rankings THW (Mid-season Consensus Rankings): 3rd NHL Central Scouting: 2nd (Mid-term, European Skaters) ISS Hockey: 4th (March) Future Considerations: 3rd (Spring) McKeen’s Hockey: 3rd (Mid-Season) Bob McKenzie: 3rd (Mid-term) Sam Cosentino: 3rd (March)” ...people who are against Podkolzin are probably the same people who were against the EP selection. I love this pick because it’s against some of the “safe” picks we took such as Virtanen. When you’re drafting high, that shouldn’t be the thought process thinking, “well hey if he busts at least he’ll be a solid 3rd liner” etc. Swing for the fences especially with the position we’re in not having much hope. Go for the guy with the highest ceiling - not the safest floor - and this exactly that. In line with the EP pick & Hughes pick. Just remember...when the Hawks won the 3rd overall lottery, people were saying they’d be able to pick Podkolzin. That’s recently how highly Podkolzin was ranked, literally just a few couple months ago and he only really dropped because his contract status/commitment to the KHL but is that really the end of the world? Just think of it as 2 years in Utica (the AHL) but better competition. I’m super stoked for this especially considering he was the consensus 3rd best player from the start of the season until mid-season rankings which was about 3/4’s into the NHL season.
