Am I encouraged by 64% CF?    I feel like I should be but require some context before quoting it out in conversation.

On top of what @Googlie has defined and in correlation with other stats you can figure out a lot of things about the players and how coaches view/utilize certain players.

Ice is tilted now Russia with majority of the puck possession, but team Russia seems content to take bad shots from the perimeter.

Podkolzin's line hasn;'t done too much but Podkolzin had two distinct defensive shifts where his Dman took a bad shot from the point, blocked, and Podz rushed back with back pressure on a 2 on 1 to block a pass.  Another, Germany had possession and Podz consistent defensive awareness, had an active stick and picked off a pass leading to Russia going the other way.

Podkolzin however does look to be nursing an injury, everytime he heads to the bench he seems to be favoring his upperbody, nevertheless has not shown it in his play today.

1st period summary:

- Podkolzin two great defensive plays breaks up Germany's ozone pressure

- Hasn't carried the puck very much this game.

- Hungry on the puck though, as poster above said, German tried stripping him of the puck, but his strength in his hands, wrist, and arms he anchors himself to pull the puck away from the German to negate Germany from going the other way at the end of the first period.

- Larionov seems to be having Amirov controlling zone entries today, whether that is a tactic to have more puck possession and speed, but it hasn't been nearly as effective when Podkolzin was the primary puck carrier against the Swedes.  Not sure why the switch but it hasn't led to as many offensive opportunities. Russia overall looked a bit tentative as they were leary of making plays into the middle of the ice, but slowly starting to poke away at Germany.

Keep the summaries coming. Can't watch the game so nice to hear about Pods play.

Right after Russia kills a penalty, Podkolzin on the attack. Strips the puck off the German defender after some really good stick work, threads a pass through the middle and leads to a scoring chance. Russia just hasn't had enough traffic in front nor directed enough towards the net.

Russia playing undisciplined and not according to their game plan. Germany seems to be matching their skating and its frustrating Russia a bit. Will be key to see how they handle this throughout the game.

Something about Podkolzin's attention to detail when he has the puck is something to marvel at. Super simple in clearing the puck, but he ensures that he has fully cupped the puck flat on the ice and on his stick and gets everything on it to clear instead of half assing a clear. He is also very attentive to get pucks off the boards and out to exit the zone rather than up the middle where often young players are inexperienced in doing so.

He has had 3 very good zone exits and clears today so far coming off his stick. This is a reason why the opposition doesn't stay in Podkolzin's dzone very long.

Another isolated shift prior to Russia's 2-0 goal, Germany gains possession in the dzone and the defender looks to clear, Podkolzin gets a stick on the puck and passes to the blueline to keep the play alive in the ozone leading to a whistle due to the German goalie needing to freeze the puck. The next faceoff and play leads to Russia scoring. Podkolzin's persistence on the play despite being out for a while with his line, sustains offensive positioning for the next shift.

Podkolzin may not score and collect he points, but his subtle plays and hardwork lead to chances and indirect possession in the ozone for other lines subsequently to pour on the pressure.

Overall rather quiet game offensively. A criticism of Podkolzin still is his overall spacing and tracking from his teammates. He still tends to lurk too closely to his own teammates on up ice breakouts and in the ozone which sort of eliminates himself as a passing option. You can tell though how hungry he is to dictate play with the puck on his stick. Something he will learn though is that spacing himself out and finding the open spot on the ice will get him the puck more often rather than hovering closely to the puck carrier.

There is a difference between puck support and lurking around because he wants the puck and its the latter. Great to see, but he will afford himself more offensive looks if he grows his trust for his teammates and lets them do his thing. It also allows defenders to easily zone in on two players rather than worrying about the pass going to an outlet.
