I didn't look into later rounds, but as for 2nd rounders, the last one was Artem Chubarov, drafted in 1998 at 31st overall and played 49 games in 1999-00.

Wow - did this kid ever impress me tonight. I figured with his skill and drive he would be good, but not this good, this quickly. If he can play like that consistently, it takes the sting out of letting TT walk.

Damn this kid is really legit... His assertiveness on the ice is so impressive.

 

Try's to takeover and make things happen everytime he's out there (And without sacrificing defensive responsibilities either).

"there can be only one...." yeahh that was an impressive debut. I have seen him play in the SHL so i know he has qualities and great potential even if he never produced in the same pace as EP40 did. But he definetly stepped up and it was very exciting to see him play the way he did, skating and working hard in the battles for the puck, and his great skating and technique. The passing was stellar and created great chances. Its like having another Petey even if Highlander doesnt have quite the same IQ. But with this i think we have another player that can pass the puck and create chances for his teammates with his creativity. Very very excited to see his progress and if this was just a fluke or if he really is this good already. i mean seriously......First Boeser, then Petey, then hughes....and now Hoglander. This is insanely good.

Have to admit, I had reservations whether he was going to be able to step in and be NHL ready with no AHL or NA experience of any kind, but last night he put a lot of those doubts to rest. 

 

Not going to say at this point, like they did on the SN broadcast, that he's a caldar candidate already but his performance last night helped me re-evaluate my concerns about him being NHL ready. 

 

Looking forward to watching his development this season for sure.

He was dishing the puck and showing his skill.  Probably one of the most noticeable forwards on the team I thought.

 

I will do my best to not get too excited, but if he can stay on that 2nd line (he doesn’t have a lot of competition) we could have another of the better rookies for the season.

It's how he played overall that was so exciting.  Winning board battles , getting to the net, didn't look intimidated at all. Was pretty unreal. Very good start because he showed he can play well offensively,  and defensively as well.  I've never seen better drafting for a management group in the NHL. It's surreal.

Was it just me or was this kid all over the ice last night? Perhaps the most noticeable player in the entire game. I have a hard time thinking he'll be like this every night but if he is, what a motor to have on the team.

I believe his D+1 was his last year in the SHL. Still, very impressive for a guy who just turned 20 last month to be in the NHL.

I came on here to ask if y'all think Höglander will stick with #36?  I thought he would try to get #21 from Eriksson.  Just don't want to get a jersey with the wrong #.  I think #21 would look best on him but can't complain what #36 represents to this franchise.  He can take the honey badger legend to another level.  Best to wait?

It feels like just yesterday that Nils Höglander was scoring a goal in his NHL debut — and it was.

The Swedish winger was the big surprise of the Canucks’ truncated training camp, holding down a top-six spot alongside Tanner Pearson and captain Bo Horvat. On Wednesday night, his surprising play continued: after a turnover, the 20-year-old followed his linemates to the net. Partially covered like a poorly maintained barbecue, Höglander fought off his check, and when the biscuit found his stick on the slot, he put in.

 

 

With that, the rookie joined an impressive group of young Canucks who made a splash in their debut. You’ll recall that Quinn Hughes scored his first NHL goal in Vancouver’s 2019 home opener, and Elias Petterson scored in his first game the year before that. So did Brock Boeser, in March 2017. Höglander is in solid company — likely a big reason why fans are jumping on his bandwagon like the winger jumped on that loose puck.

With his stock and his SEO score on the rise, it’s time to get to know him. So here are five fast facts about the Vancouver Canucks rookie:

1 | It’s Hoagie, not Hoggy

Note the umlaut. It means the first syllable of the rookie’s name rhymes with brogue or doge,not log or dog. One might be tempted to nickname him Hogger or Little Piggy, or maybe even Hamton, in reference to the Tiny Toons character (or because he put the puck Inn and the goal was Suite). But the umlaut makes a long O, so the porcine nicknames won’t fly.

With his first big-league goal in the bank, we might call him Ones Höglander, but nil is a soccer term. He’s more of a lacrosse guy.

2 | No shade in the shadow of lacrosse

That section header is a Sufjan Stevens reference, if you’re wondering, and there’s more where that came from. Höglander’s right in the middle of The Ascension. With the Rogers logo on his helmet, he’s clearly joined the Canucks in the Age of Ads. He’s a master of the Michigan goal.

The under-sized Swede has a penchant for the play, otherwise known as the lacrosse goal or, in Sweden, the “Zorro Goal”, in which the player lifts the puck behind the net, then tucks it top-corner, surprising the goalie. It’s rare because it’s hard to do — but Höglander makes it look easy.

Just over a year ago, at the World Juniors, the winger pulled it off at full-speed against Finland.

 

 

Safe to say it was the goal of the tournament — and not just the 2019 edition. It doesn’t get any better than this.

3 | King of the Zorro goal

Even before making his mark on the international stage, Höglander pulled the same move twice in the Swedish Hockey League, winning goal of the year honours both times.

This clip includes both SHL goal. Fair warning: it begins with the one at the World Juniors again, but I’m sure you won’t mind the rerun. I’ve watched the goal twelve times while writing this piece, including twice since I started writing this sentence.

 

 

Höglander’s reputation for trying the move has followed him to the NHL. In training camp last week, teammate Zack MacEwen tried the move against him.

It didn’t work, and I award MacEwen no points for the attempt. You come at the king, you best not miss.

4 | Small stature, big plays

By now, most people know what Höglander’s about, but the Vancouver Canucks have been high on the Hög ever since he was selected 40th overall at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

How he slipped to round two is a mystery to many, though it probably had something to do with his size: Höglander is 5’9″, which is a perfectly acceptable height, in my opinion. But in hockey, as in COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, anything under six feet is considered a liability.

Fortunately, the Canucks were put off. Then-director of amateur scouting Judd Brackett was visibly giddy when discussing the winger after the pick, telling beat reporter Patrick Johnston the kid was “lightning quick,” and that his playmaking skills were second to none.

“The hands are as good as anyone in the draft, if not the best,” he said.

5 | He’s super young, you’re super old

And finally, here’s a fact that is bound to make many of you feel very old: Höglander’s birthday is December 20, 2000, making him the first Vancouver Canuck born after the millennium. Remember the Titans came out before he did; Gladiator and Almost Famous, too.

Höglander hails from the Swedish town of Bockträsk — a northern community so tiny that it doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. But maybe that might change? If anyone is putting Bockträsk on the map, it’s this guy.

The Canucks play again on Thursday night.

None likely have the same ceilings as those guys but we may me able to enjoy solid rookie seasons for Hoglander and Juolevi and then Podkolzin next year (likely doesn't get the GP required this spring to qualify a rookie "season").

**Not at all trying to compare. I don't think their playstyles are remotely similar. Just appreciating how good Hogs looked in his first game, an absolute steal of a pick.

 

Watching the NYR game, must say, Hogs looks a little more dangerous than Lafreniere so far. Besides the the size and overall puck control, Id say Hogs better finishing and has a stick thats a bit quicker.  Both see the ice just as well. Could be the mid season form, but its crazy what that an extra year of development can do to a kids confidence. Patently waiting to see what Stuetzle can do here in the NHL.

Not that I fully like to compare prospects with existing players, but he kind of makes me think of Gallagher just with his play style.

Did you guys watch the game with John and John?

I had to watch on NHL.com and had Hrudy and some dummy Oilers homer that couldn't remember anything correctly. Called Yamamoto's penalty a slashing penalty after running our goalie. The Hamonic shot pass with Motte deflection was a double deflection. It was dreadful commentary.
