Fred65
I wonder if picking up Hoglander in the second round impacted their decission in trading for Miller, ie Hoglander is our equivalent to next seasons 1st round pick, maybe not quite but close enough to permit us to trade away our pick for immediate help ?

They traded for Miller before the draft so that would have had no impact. I think they’ve been looking for a player like Miller to play in the top 6 for quite some time. This just happened to be the price for a player like that that is signed and in their prime.

I think Benning just got lucky again with a great player being available. Hoglander is going to be fun to watch, and suddenly the left side looks pretty good. I hope he gets to play with Pettersson. Popular Post GoldenAlien
Excerpts from an article on Hoglander: https://www.nhl.com/news/nils-hoglander-strong-start-vancouver-canucks-development-camp/c-308273482 "Many skated over and said, 'Wow, this guy is fun to watch," Vancouver senior director of player development Ryan Johnson said during development camp. "I can say it, but when the other players are talking about it, that's the ultimate compliment." "He has a deceptive release and his hands are really good," Canucks goalie Michael DiPietro said. "It's impressive. He made a breakaway move against me where he put the puck behind his back. I haven't seen that too much, and he did it so fluidly too." In camp, Hoglander's shot often seemed to finish just under the crossbar, but it was the way he got into prime shooting areas that impressed Johnson. "It's the finish, but it's also the power and explosiveness out of corners. He almost plays a reverse physical game," Johnson said. "If a defender comes at him, he's not afraid to pop him and explode to the net, which catches people off guard because visually he doesn't overwhelm you. The power in his legs, and the skill set he has, there's something special there." Hoglander left development camp with instructions to focus more on his edge work. "Turns on the ice, I can be better on that," he said. He also wants to use his shot more this season. If all the facets of his game come together, he hopes to be in the NHL by 2020-21. Of his attempt to make to the NHL by the time he's 20, Hoglander said, "It's hard to do, but I will do my best." Hoglander in 2020 and Podkolzin in 2021 . Madden, Rathbone and Woo could also make the team in that time frame -- a nice infusion of ELCs when EP40 gets his raise. 2

I'm not sure about that. the report stated The Canucks picked Nils Hoglaner 40th overall but then traded their third-round pick, along with either their 2020 first-round pick or their 2021 first-round pick, and Marek Mazanec, for JT Miller. Yeah I wonder about their thought process, what were they thinking, which came first etc. Funny thing is if they make the play-offs and manage to get to the next round, Hogelander would be the equivalent of what they would get at that stage ie a 16-25 range selection. makes you wonder what their plan was. Ah the old conspiracy theories …. make the summer pass quicker LOL 1

Should we trade another one? The obvious answer to that is, it depends on what you get for the pick. You don't just look for some way to throw the pick away, as always you consider the value you are getting in return.

I tend to think management has faith in Brackett to make lower round picks which gives them to consider making trades easier

Sounds like the Brackett guy is brilliant at the draft. To me Hoglander is a definite top nine player.

Brackett's contract expires next year. I hope the next contract is Asst. GM at good money. He's maybe the best scouting option the club has had. Mind you JB said much the same when he drafted Lind :-) Edited July 22, 2019 by Fred65

Kind of, but with more bite to his game, and a much better skater. Best hands in the draft according to many.
higgyfan
Zucc is 3" and 20lbs lighter, but you are dead wrong about his toughness, speed and playmaking abilities. If Hogs end up to be like Zucc we would all be elated. Check him out, Alf!

Megalodon
.??? By that logic, every gm in the league is lucky. The only for sure is first overall. Everything else is chosen from what is left.
