[Report] Canucks extend qualifying offers to 8 players

Recommended Posts

It isn’t really a vote of confidence for all the guys qualified... most of them were cheap enough that you can bury them in the minors with no cap implications if they don’t make the roster.  The guys not qualified were more expensive.

A guy like Goldobin could even have some small value as part of a bigger deal with a cap crunched team that needs cheap players.

Not at all surprising.  Looks like Goldobin is given another chance to prove he's got what it takes.

Pouliot, Gaunce and Granlund were all disappointing this year. but there's also no space for them now either.

eh?  He was with the Comets the whole season pretty much and did reasonably well there.  Played three games at the start here and had 1 goal & 2 assists.  Not sure what kind of player you were expected.  Fringe player but still usefull at the AHL level (they'll probably offer him a minor league contract at some point).  Poo was poo at the NHL level (not much else can be said).  Granlund, meh.....we won't notice his absence.

Hutton is better than OJ at this point.

They didn't qualify him because 4mill plus is too much for him. They'll still try to re sign him at around 2.75 mill

are they allowed to tell him that ahead of time? he could still test the market if he wanted

His whopping 8 points in the AHL last year to Hutton’s 20 points in the NHL makes this statement false.

Ah...if the position, or all comparisons for that sake, were solely dependent on the count of points.

I for one will take a sound Sautner (or name another #5/6) at $675,000 versus $3-4M in Hutton. Let's face it folks, Hutton is a #5 or 6 D on a great team at best.

Hutton can still come back as has been stated, but losing Gaunce and Pouliot really isn't anything. Feel like Gaunce didn't get a fair shake but at the end of the day we have dozens of bottom 6 forwards so it's not a big deal. Pouliot was poop. Interested to see what the team does with Goldy. He was given every opportunity to make it work with our two best offensive weapons and just seemed to struggle with his compete level. I am not against giving him another look, especially if we strike out on Nyquist or another top 6 forward in Free Agency. But honestly I'd rather package him with other pieces to improve the defense.

I'm actually a bit surprised by Granlund. He's a fairly versatile player and inexpensive. I'd take him over Motte. Maybe it's simply a role issue, adn we have better players to fill out our top nine.

There are all sorts of players not getting qualified though. The flames are tossing Rychel, and I remember when he was considered one of Columbus' future stars. . .

As a winger, I prefer Motte, as a centre we still have Sutter, though I’d rather not... not hat he is a bad guy, he’s not... he’s got good character, he does his role well, it’s just health issues.

Surprised about Granlund, he had a bad year last year, but prior to that he was one of the surprises

I know, but Granlund wasn't pushing the needle. We need bigger, stronger, faster, more skilled players in our line up. Granlund was decent at most things but not great at anything. Sure he'll give you 25 points and play decent D but we need more than that in our bottom 6. Personally, I'd like to see MacEwen get a look or see what kind of upgrades are available in free agency. I mean, Nic Dowd signed for $750K. That's almost $250K savings on Granlund and arguably a better player. You can always circle back to Granlund in the end, but if you can upgrade or save some cap, you do it.

Agreed on just giving MacEwen his spot.
