Vancouver Canucks Presser

Sitting amid newly minted Kopitar and McDonagh bobbleheads, we caught up with Primal Optimist and asked just what he had in mind this wacky offseason.

Quote

Well, for starters, we are thrilled with the second round appearance in the playoffs this summer, and we think we could have gone even further if the ice wasn't melting under our feet as the rounds went on. Definately poor ice contributed to our 2nd round exit, none the less, we have addressed some key needs already in the offseason. First and FOremost was getting under the cap while remaining competitive, and we did that, we think, via the 'cap crunch' that every team has been facing. We said goodbye to a few great faces in order to flip the franchise back into fighting order quickly, while diving under the flat cap for this year. Our fans have been asking and we have not been hiding the fact that we are choosing to sit tight in the FA frenzy. We may make a depth move and acquire a veteran in the paint to push our tendies in training camp, but other than that Vancouver is riding out the 2020 offseason in order to best protect our club for the future.

What a Future that is looking like! Next summer we clear 4 million in retention and buyout cap which is as good as a raise to the cap in any normal year, maybe better, while our opponents will have the same flat cap as this year. With about 7 million in expiring deals next summer, we will have double digits of millions to target our upgrades after the coming season.

This year we are thrilled to have had the fortune of pencilling in a bevy of young guns to make the jump to the bigs, and while we will be relying on some big name veteran Blueliners that have mostly just arrived, we will be young, fast and skilled up front. A challenge for any club we meet on the ice to contain. Denis Gurianov, Logan Brown, Jason Robertson and Alex Formenton will all be given ample latitude this fall to make the strides we feel they can make and hopefully each and every one of them earns  a full time starter job next January! It is a rare luxury to have three great players ready to graduate at the same time, and join Gury on the big club.

Thank you to our patient fans, we have managed to have a good run of years in the playoffs for all but one lately, and we plan to attempt to return to the post season next year, with a much more heavy blueline attack to prop up our much much younger forward group. Next summer we hope to make the splash you were all looking for this year.

Islanders OTB

The New York Islanders are still looking for a home for Jaccob Slavin, who plays on top pair with Dougie Hamilton, and had 36 points in 68 games last season (26 years old). Shopping him, as he's my only Hurricane player, and I prefer to load up with players on the same team, so he's on his way out, unfortunately.

So, if you are still in need of defensemen, hit me up. I've got them all.
