Spending some time today on a nice little look at my roster and depth charts. A 'year in review' isn't likely, but I think it is a good time to catch up to speed and begin our pre camp office work. Dotting i's and crossing t's and revising our wishlist and depth chart seems like time well spent in the countdown to the most wonderful time, of the year! (WJC's!!!)

Speaking of the WJC's our emphasis on drafting in recent years has really begun to pay off, as you can read below:

Spoiler

Unsigned Prospect Report:

Matthew Robertson was sent home from the Canadian WJC camp deemed unfit to play based upon covid protocols, but the national junior team did not comment on if he was positive or not in testing. Most were shocked he was not going to be on the ice for Canada in the tourney.

Nathan Legare put up 14 points in 14 games captaining the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the Q but appears to have just been traded to Val D'or. As of yesterday he was invited to Pittsburgh Penguins camp for January!

Shane Pinto is currently on FIRE in the NCAA with North Dakota where he has put up 5 goals, 8 assists and is +7 in 10 games so far.

Adam Beckman was one of the final cuts to team Canada's WJC team earlier this month and is expected to shine with the SPokane Chiefs after a 107 points season last year in just 63 games and finishing the year with a pretty wild +44 on the plusminus. The Talented Winger had 12 points in 15 playoff games with SPokane two years ago as a 17 year old.

Seth Jarvis, another of the WJC final roster cuts this month and by all accounts he can attack the net from a phone booth placed anywhere in the offensive zone. The magic stick worker put up 98 points in 58 games and was +53 with Portland last year. He will work to beat that tally in the same uniform this season.

Topi Niemela just had a two point game at the one and only Finnish tune up game against the highly touted team USA at the WJC's. This puck distributing machine will be noticed by the hockey world over the coming weeks, perhaps more so than even in his draft year. Stoked to see how this 18 year old rounds out his game in the coming years. Blueline asset in all three zones for sure, hard to come by!

Wyatt Kaiser, the Dman had 34 points in 25 games from the back end in highschool last year and that was enough to see him drafted in the 3rd round by Chicago! lots of runway in front of this kid to see him take off, and we can't wait to see how his NCAA career goes. Off to a decent start with 4 points in 9 games and +4 at Minnesota Duluth.

All in all we think we will be quite pleased with the crop and we think at minimum 6 of 7 will see the show at the CDCFL level in not too many years time. Patience is a virtue I need to develop, haha.

Spoiler

Notable Prospects Report:

Jason Robertson, 21, Going back to the WJC two years ago Jason put up 7 points in 7 games, and then in his rookie AHL campaign we got to see 25 goals and 22 assists from the noteworthy prospect. We hope he has the kind of camp that continues to build our confidence in him, and we think there is a good chance to see him in the dance this year, very exciting ceiling, thus far 1 assist in 3 NHL games.

Alex Formenton, 21 had 10 NHL games before his first AHL game, and that alone is noteworthy for the 6'3" 21 year old. His rookie AHL season was just last year and we are thrilled beyond belief to report 27 goals, 26 assists for 53 points in 61 games in his rookie pro campaign. This is another young gun we feel can earn a spot in camp.

Alexander True, 23, and the former captain of the Danish WJC team from three seasons back. This defensively sound 6'5" is ready to come out of the A and prove himself in the NHL. Potential as a third line C in the best league on the planet is a pretty sweet situation to have a chance to earn. Looking forward to seeing him this year more than any previous, as with a lot of tall 200 pounders, it takes a few extra seasons to get it all put together.

Sampo Ranta, 20. Already in his third NCAA season, and breaking out this year with near a point per game thus far (4g,3a in 8 games) and at 6'2" and 200 lbs Sampo may be another two or three years from a full time NHL job but when he gets there, specifically there in front of the crease, opposing tendies are not going to like it.

Kasper Bjorkvist, 23. Another Finn, a bit older however coming off a lost season for shoulder surgery, Kasper has been on loan to KooKoo of the Liiga where he put up 4 goals and 5 assists in the opening 8 games, he has come back down to earth a bit since and is expected back in North America from his loan that seems totally associated to COVID interuptions. An exciting young prospect for the club.

Teemu Kivihalme, 25, pushes the envelope just a smidge on Notable Prospects, however the man only had his first North American pro season this past one, the covid reduced AHL year. He still managed to put up 18 points in 55 games in his AHL rookie year after two in the LIiga and three NCAA years before that. Teemu is developing in the classic blueliner mold and could hit the NHL in peak years at 26/27 years old. Sounds funny to some younger folks, but it used to be the norm. We are holding out to see what the late bloomer has to show us.

D Gabriel Carlsson, 23 has finally matured to match his 6'5" frame and should be a full time player with the Columbus Blue Jackets this year. He has had his cups of coffee over the last 4 seasons since his first round draft spot in 2015.

D Alexandre Carrier, 24, when this all around dman finally makes it, he is likely to stick for a long while. 37 points in 55 games in the A last season, there is good upside here that we would love to display on our 2nd pairing for years to come.

G Ian Scott, 21 has been frozen in time, seemingly, as he lost the entire of last season to healing up from an injury and subsequent surgery. So let us look back to May 2019. WHL's Goalie of the year, Playoff MVP and that years playoff stats being his most recent I will post them. 1.96gaa and .925 sv% over 23 playoff games!!! Stellar. Ian's future could be sky high if the injury has not forced him down a peg on the ladder. Can't wait to see what he can do when fully recovered and back in midseason form.

Spoiler

Freshly Graduated Report:

Logan Brown, 22, a 2016 first round draft pick, got a cuppa two seasons ago and last year managed to enjoy 23 NHL games. THis year he looks to be a full time Senator, and we will get to see lots of him with the new "NOrthern" Division! At the AHL level last season he put up 28 points in 25 games.

D John Marino, 23 stepped out of the NCAA to join the Penguins last year on the big club and put up 26 points in 56 games while maintaining a +17 rating. We have every reason to believe this year will be another great one to watch and we feel he has his spot on the club, however with his waiver ineligible status, he could be sent down a few times to accomodate front office moves with regards to the cap. AN intriguingly offensive Dman, you may have to peel our dead claw off of in order to acquire any time soon, we hope to have John in a Vancouver Sweater for years to come.

G Adin Hill, 24, has a bakers dozen NHL games in each of the last two years. 2.62gaa and a .918 during last years regular season in the bigs. Adin looks to be our backup this year and we feel he is ready to take on that roll full time and work his way up from there.

D Christian Wolanin, 25, may have a full time job in the Ottawa Senators young core. the 6'2" Dman is no liability on the ice whatsoever and if he can find his AHL knack from just two seasons ago he should be high flying up the charts. in 18-19 he put up 31 in 40 in the A and 12 in 30 with then struggling Ottawa. This graduate will be handy in that he still has some waiver ineligibility to help us juggle to start the season.

Spoiler

The Young Guns Report:

Denis Guryanov, 23, wIth at least one NHL game in the last 3 seasons, Guri is already a solid professional contributor. In 64 games last year he put up 20 goals with the Dallas Stars, but the playoffs showed off his maturing skills. 9 goals, 8 assists in 27 playoff games!!! Happy to have him, won't be looking to trade him anytime soon. ; )

D Robert Hagg, 25 is at the top end of our "young guns" status internally, at 25. 20 points in 82 games two years ago was his first full season and he added in 63 plms for us to boot. Last playoffs we saw 3 points on 12 games after a 13 points regular season over 49 games. The two way Dman is moving up in our esteem and is a core piece of the Vancouver Canucks game plan moving forward.

And so you can see, our "Under 25" segment of the club is as healthy and deep as I could hope for at this stage. I have 20 good guys here who mostly are looking for a roster spot to call home with Vancouver and that is before I even begin to mention the vets.

Mikael Backlund, Anze Kopitar, Ryan McDonagh, John Klingberg, Justin Schultz, Jeff Petry, and David Rittich, to name just a few.

I am particularly pleased that we managed this transition, somewhat well, with unexpectedly making the cut for the playin round!

All these men and many more will be depth charted in the coming days, watch this spot!! THis is an exciting year for Vancouver, and all our young guns and new addition vets, along with our loyal warriors.
