Myers won't be doing that with the NHL tough guys. I think that this off-season was good in terms of getting tougher although we're still missing that one nuclear deterrent. For everyone naming Virtanen, Myers and Benn as tough guys, please stop. They can throw big hits, which is great, but they won't be intimidating anyone with their fighting and Myers/Virtanen will look for ways out of fights. The reality is that our Canucks are so deep that we don't have room for any tough guys. I'm happy with where we sit. Ferland?

hockeygod77
you guys are nuts...trade for lucic...lets get serious if you want a good team that will have a chance to get into playoffs and go deep..if you fans dont get it forget it...ive been watching hockey long time...i understand game has changed..i know its a business...toughness is not about getting the biggest toughest guy like a lucic..he would have been fine in his first 5 years of pro....team toughness which i have been preaching for years....the whole team needs to buy in every night....the team has to go into every game feeling confident that they can beat any team with the skill players they have and feel secure too that no player will take liberty on them......bering tough in the nhl is not just size..it is your character your mental state toughness and tough attitude being able to go into the dirty areas and play hard in corners and in front of the net...thats what i want to see as a fan...

Snapshot85
Everyone believes the nhl is changing.... it's about skill, and speed, ect. Enter St Louis.... a longshot to win... low on skill and speed. But one of the largest BMI,s in the NHL lol. Its proves a point. No team needs to get tougher... or faster..or more skilled... they just need to figure out what they do well as a unit.. and use it to exploit other teams. Most successful teams will have a mix... and I believe we found ours with our offseason signings. But doesn't necessity need a mix... case in point St Louis. Our beloved team just needs to figure out what makes themselves tick now. My 2c for the day

Just like last year I’m not sure anything will change with the exception MAYBE, EPs left alone - at least until the games start to matter more - and that’s a big maybe in how the team reacts to the first couple weeks of the season. Honestly that seems ridiculous... it was clearly an incidental accidental high sticking, the guy never went after Hughes. Going after a player for that is not only dumb, it will also ensure we lose every game because we will give up a dozen power plays each night. I hope that the tough guys actually bring some toughness and don't end up wanting to be skill players instead. I remember Gudbranson's first interview when he got here during informal skates at UBC before training camp and he said "I think I have untapped offensive potential that I can show here"... that was the first warning sign that he wasn't going to be as advertised. He was no Willy Mitchell and that is kind of what we were sold.
oldnews
Not going to pretend I like the lineup better in the absence of guys like Gudbranson and Kassian - or even smaller toughness that could play (ie Dorsett) - but I also think the NHL as a whole is shedding 'toughness' overall for skill/speed - and that it's less important to have a 'heavyweight' these days than it is toughness throughout the lineup that can push back (whether or not there is any 'intimidation' factor in the lineup). Overall though - I think it's unquestionable that they've gotten bigger and added grit this summer - Ferland and Benn the obvious examples - but have also gotten bigger and more aggressive on the wings - with Miller after adding Pearson and Roussel (while Virtanen also develops, and they just drafted a pwf in Podkolzin). I think that is a crucial area - where whether they are 'tougher' or not - they have added speed and some heaviness on the wings - where they needed to establish a more effective forecheck, put more presssure on opponents/be 'harder to play against'. For that reason, I think the team is 'tougher' and taking steps in the right direction (even if they've lost guys like Gud and Kass). And crucially imo - they have added that size and toughness in the form of top 6/9 wingers that are skilled/who add secondary scoring - and could play with guys like Pettersson (crucially needed to add toughness that could play with him / will be on the ice with him / provide not just that forecheck, but a present 'policing' role to address guys looking to take liberties on the young skilled forwards (and Hughes). Borvat
So the Blues and Bruins just played for the Stanley Cup. I don't exactly call those rosters full of knuckle chucker's. Size and push back are the new toughness. This roster is just fine. What I want to see is a "willingness" to stand up for each other.
IBatch
BB first game back and gets his head rammed into the boards...and Tierney got his two minutes and left the game unscathed. What happened to this team is tough enough? Sure Ferland didn’t play - but if I was TG I’d staple him to that line for as long as it takes even if his not producing points. The team needs to start sticking up for anybody that gets cheapshotted every time. It’s not injury prone if your expected to play through those sort of things. Should be ashamed - gutless hockey. “Get em back on the scoreboard” has been this team go to phrase for so long i wonder if it’s even possible to remove that from the culture without doing something drastic. Torts where are you when we need you ha ha .. just kidding ... kind of. I like TG but would like him more if he didn’t tow the company line and for once get really mad about this sort of thing. The bright side is it’s the pre-season and hopefully he will be ready by the season opener. That said I’m not impressed that he wasn’t run or nobody didn’t go after Chabot the same way. Teams take notice and watch video - last year teams learned to play EP physical and it worked. They won’t stop this year unless we stop them and make them pay every time. I know the enforcer is gone but I sure miss Gino right about now - someone who’s willing to take a suspension and game misconducts to get targets off players backs, and if our stars get targeted immediately take a run at one of there’s. 1

I stand by what I said - the team needs to step up and become the aggressor and how they play the first couple week and the remainder of the pre-season is the perfect time to set the tone. The leagues is trying to scare guys into not misbehaving - but everyone gets a freebie or two or three and the players know that - it’s never worked in the past and I can’t see it working in the future (the league becoming the main deterrent). Hope this is a wake up call, we need to break the passive culture that seemingly embedded itself and then for quite some time...if all it takes is a headhunting mission to take us out we are done for before it’s even started. Teams need to know that they put a target on their stars and think twice before nailing a guy that’s shown his numbers.
BPA
With all the recent additions, Canucks have gotten bigger. But in no way did they get tougher (with the exception of Ferland).

With what was available would you rather have had Hutton and Stecher behind Tanev and Edler?? Just having two more realistic NHL D men to trot out when Edler or Tanev get hurt should improve our team. Myers will help, Benn will help. Hughes is the one i am most worried about. He did not look good in pre-season. He looked much better last season in the last 4 games.
