[Signing] Avalanche re-sign Mikko Rantanen

Recommended Posts

Wow. Steep price but Colorado is looking great on paper this year, aside from their inexperienced D corp. This team has lots of young world class talent and once Makar and Bowen get their feet wet and hit their stride, look out. Av's are going to be the Lightning of the West for the foreseeable future.

This looks a bit bad given some recent bridges -  But just no surprise here either.  Knew he was going to be the richest COL player after what he achieved last year and in the playoffs...in a few years when all the other guys are signing their next contracts Sakic will look like he did a good job with this one.

Steep and decent? This is a GREAT price in correlation with the term.

Avs did well.

I'd say it's fair really...  only a 6 year deal, and 9.25 is not peanuts.  If it was 8 years X 9 mil, I'd say Avs got a good deal.

Best player from this RFA class imo.  Lol Marners and Matthews contracts look sooooo bad now.

Yep. The Marner and Matthews contracts should have been eight years for the price Dubas paid for them. He did not handle those negotiations well.

Benefit to them is that the only bad contract they have on the team is Ceci so they can work around the $1m aav overpayments they each received.

Fair deal on both sides, just like every other RFA deal except the Marner one.

Goes to show you that having a young and inexperienced GM such as Dubas was a mistake. From Nylander, Matthews to Marner. All way over paid RFA contracts. The player agents must just love dealing with this guy!

Marner, Captain Underpants and Tavares all max bonus money, every year of their deals. Why even have a negotiation ?

Nylander looks good in comparison at only 60% bonus money.

With Matthews now as Captain Underpants, does anyone remember Patrick Kane being 50 Cent or something similar ways back? :)

That's a pretty good deal for the Avs tbh, he didn't get Marner money and they weren't willing to give it to him. Good for them.

Given how dynamic that line is, the term Rantanen is signed to and the firepower they have coming up on the back end the Avs are looking pretty damn good.

Now that that's over, here's the sorted AAV breakdown:

  • Marner at $10.893 mil x 6 years
  • Rantanen at $9.25 mil x 6 years
  • Aho at $8.454 mil x 5 years
  • (Not a RFA) Chabot at $8 mil x 8 years
  • Connor at $7.14 mil x 5 years
  • Matthew Tkachuk at $7 mil x 3 years
  • Laine at $6.75 mil x 2 years
  • Point at $6.75 mil x 3 years
  • Provorov at $6.75 mil x 6 years
  • Meier at $6 mil x 4 years
  • Boeser at $5.87 mil 5 x 3 years
  • Konecny at $5.5 mil x 6 years
  • Werenski at $5 mil x 3 years
  • McAvoy at $4.9 mil x 3 years
  • Colin White at $4.75 mil x 6 years

Imho, considering both term and AAV, it's still Meier and McAvoy as the best value. Damn those Sharks and Bruins...

Meier's qualifying offer is 10 million. Not a fan of that. McAvoy is similar that it's a good price, but QO is 7.3 million. Werenski's QO is 7 million. In comparison, BB's QO is 7.5 million, which makes BB's just as good as most of these similar deals in the long term.

Point is the best deal IMO but they have the tax advantage. Personally I think Aho's deal is pretty good, but the offer sheet actually helped them. Aho was in a market that needs him and he could've easily demanded more, but the deal hurts because of the term.

I think Marner is overpaid, but he probably actually took less than he could've held out for. With that said, Marner can play a regular PK shift which is what makes him stand out above most. So with that in mind, I personally think Rantanen's deal is overpriced (or at least simply a fair deal) in comparison for a 6 year term. If it was 8 years then it would be much better. But it's Colorado, they can do no wrong to most here.
