Yep, flipping off the crowd sure isn't an attitude issue, never mind the long list of classless behaviour by Lucic.

It was Montreal, not like they ooze class themselves.

Also donating time to a family of a sick child trumps fingering a crowd once.

Insisting on wearing number 66 - Ho Sang - should tell you A LOT about him.

Yep.  Definitely crossed a line for me, despite it being technically allowed.  Showed a ton of disrespect for the history of the sport by doing that.

100% biased as a huge fan of Super Mario as a kid.

You don't think Edmonton would take him for their middle 6? They are very weak in the wings, and he'd be an improvement on several guys.

I highly doubt he makes it through waivers if that's what's happening.

That's exactly what I thought. I live near Edmonton and they're desperately needing players like Baer. They were absolutely stupid not to take him. Absolutely stupid.

Yeah, and the problem is, he's nowhere as good as Mario was, which makes the whole thing even worse. (Not saying the whole thing would be justifiable in the first place, but at least you could say "well, hard to argue, his role model was Mario, and plays like him too")

Lucic is a saint by contrast.

They could've taken Goldobin if salary cap was their issue. Low risk, decent reward.

At least contact Mario and ask him if it's ok if you use the number and tell him why.  Lemieux's a classy enough guy it would probably have been a non-issue if he'd done that..  Kid's too young to even remember Mario though and couldn't hold his jock strap.

I think as a fanbase, we're more conscious of unofficially retired numbers after a worthless piece of garbage decided to steal Maki's number.

Lucic and Ference have no attitude issues, they play/played on and over the edge. But both are highly respected by teammates. Ference also became very close with a family of a sick girl in Boston and made sure to visit them when Edmonton came to play Boston.

Didn’t Lucic threaten to kill Weise?  He also threatened a guy on the streets of Vancouver.

Pretty much every team has a player that wears #4. Bobby Orr is considered by some as the greatest player ever. No one ever mentions insulting Orr by wearing his number.  #66 has been worn before. Not often though. Gino Odjick wore it for a game or two.

The only sacred number is #99. Only Wilf Paiement was dumb enough to wear it.

Never said he was perfect, and the guy he “threatened” in Vancouver was a drunk clown who was harassing him. He’s calmed that stuff down as he has gotten older.

#4 and even #9 are common numbers with so many players wearing them in the early days. I don't think anybody wore 99 (I could be wrong, if there has, there wasnt many) or 66, Wayne and Mario made those numbers famous. Even in rec league, a lot of players wear number 4 or 9, but no one or VERY rarely you see 66 or 99. You're really asking for it if you wear those numbers

My guess is he will have more value once he clears waivers as he can be recalled at any time.

A trade could still happen.

Well he didn't get picked up as I suspected.  Does he have to clear waivers again when being recalled?  Wondering if this is what you mean by him having more value once he clears waivers.  Man it would be nice to have him available to bring up if needed but a trade would be good too.  Would hate to lose Sven for nothing.

No more recall waivers with the current CBA. That's pretty much it: if a player clears, a team can trade for him and stash him in the AHL without having to worry about them getting plucked away if they send him down (if they do it within the 30-day/10 NHL game time-frame of the waiver clearing) or when they eventually call him up.

The #66 has nothing to do with the NY Islanders.  Why the **** cant he wear it?

Its actually sad that people think this way about numbers.  If I was an NHLer I would want to wear #19 in honor of my favorite player, Markus Naslund.  Not as a sign of disrespect,  but as a sign of respect.  Numbers shouldn't even be retired.  They should just be hung from the rafters to remember but the players should continue to be able to wear them.

I get retiring numbers for a team, if a player was truly great in their time there. Luongo shouldn't be retired in Van, and I'm a massive Luongo fan, but he didn't quite reach that.

Hank and Dank were special, and deserving of having their number retired. 99 retired across the league makes sense, but not Mario, despite him being the 2nd or 3rd best of all time.
