Anyways,

What do people think Tyler's chances are of making the team in some capacity?

Liked how he played in the few games he's gotten. A little more experience and some faceoff work, and he could well be our 4C/PK Beagle replacement. I think he makes the opening night line-up if Beagle isn't ready to go. 13th forward/first call up if he is.

I am kind of am in the same boat as you. I worry that Beagle, despite what some are saying, may not be back.

I like him, but trouble is, he doesn't PK.  And isn't particularly good in the circle (career f/o win % is 46.5% in 84 games)

His even strength misc stats are decent....

time on ice per game: 9.04 mins

77 hits in 84 games  (30.47 per 60 mins)

13.65 blocked shots per 60 mins

4.17 giveaways per 60 mins

20.53 takeaways per 60 mins

But those numbers don't scream "3rd or 4th line center", and we have a plethora of wingers vying for a spot on the big team,  so I think Abbotsford is likely, as a depth call-up

It would free up 3 mil in cap space though if he stays on ltir and would help the canucks.

Would be a huge blessing. Beagle's advanced stats are horrific, he is a liability. I wouldn't mind him on the roster if he was getting paid $800K but $3M on a cap-strapped team is terrible roster management.

This is all wrong.

Eriksson was brought here for his Offensive skills which disappeared when he signed his contract here. He was supposed to play Top 6 minutes.

Beagle, Roussel and Sutter were brought here for their skills at stopping goals from going into our net whether 5 on 5 or in a PK role. They are not here to take the lead on the team in scoring. That is for others. Bottom 6 players tend to get hurt more because of the game that is expected of them. Sutter was an ironman on Pits but got injured a bunch when he came to the Canucks because of what was needed from him in those starting years. Notice to that he has been less injured as our team has been getting better as he has more help.

You and others are to hung up on goals when D is just as important, maybe more so in today's league. Look at the Leafs and Edmonton. They are built to score goals but cannot stop them from going into their own net and cannot win a series.

Sutter was a third line C in Pittsburg, just how he spent most of his time here. The amount of injuries in Vancouver should have them questioning the training, medical staff and coaching. Of course, there is the fact that when Burke left no-one in Vancouver fought the NHL for a fair schedule, and that lead to a weary time vulnerable to injury.

Supposedly Eriksson was signed to play with two of the best offensive players in the league, but like the Sedins, he was awful at getting pucks for himself - it didn’t work with the Sedins because there was no-one on the line to go get the puck, or as the Sedins began to think of themselves as stars, to play defensively.

As for Roussel, Beagle and Sutter being brought here for their stellar defensive play, they weren’t and never have been stellar defensive, In addition, when you are paying 3 mil for a bottom six player, one expects substantially more than one or two goals per year. Lots of defensive specialists give some measure of offence. Miller, for instance, was a third and fourth line player with Tampa. Kesler and Burrows both started out as third liners, so did Grabner. Even now, who is the better player: Motte or Roussel?

Couldn’t disagree more with you there.

Looking at the scoring numbers is the most shallow way to judge defensive players.

You think that Tampa cares that Goodrow only had 6 goals in 55 games this year?

Well, they have hardly excelled at defence, and for three mil per, they ought to bring something. As for Goodrow, that’s three times more goals than Beagle and six times more than Roussel, and he plays better defence. Oh yeah, let’s not forget his fourteen assists. Thanks for making my point for me.

Internationally Sedins and Eriksson had success together but it did not work in the NHL. Plus, Eriksson, like many of those UFA's, signed their contracts and forgot how to play hockey. No idea what happened to that crop of UFA's.

Kesler, Burrows, Grabner and many other players start off on the third to get their feet wet in the NHL. Very few players just jump into the top 6. I am pretty sure but let me know if I am wrong, the Sedins also started on the third line.

Sutter has always played on the third line. I know. Beagle played 4th line in Washington. What was the point of that statement. My point was Eriksson and Beagle should not be compared together as they filled different roles on the team.

I disagree with Beagle and Sutter not being stellar defensively, You do not need to run and get Petey boi to show all the stats as I do not agree that stats can show the whole picture in a team sport like hockey.

The contracts were a bit over at the time of signing but with Cap expected to go up, it was fine. We were also a bottom team trying to add more defense to the team to give Horvat more of an O role. Also, Burke mentioned many players put all the Canadian teams on the NTC lists so you have to overpay guys to get them to play here. The contracts are bad now because of a flat cap but that was unforeseen.

Roussel before he injured his knee was exactly what this team needed. The line of Roussel - Beagle - Motte was one of the best 4th lines in the league. Gritty fast and hard working. However, injuries have plagued them all. Again, you cannot judge them as bad signings because they got injured and slowed down. I watched the Vegas bubble series twice and whatever Roussel whispered into Reeves ear (drew a penalty) changed how Reeves and a few others on that line played. Roussel got in their heads and they wanted to get him. It worked in our favour. Who do I want more, Motte or Roussel? I want both of them pre-injury.

However, I have said this many times. I do not think Beagle will be very effective this year. I also think that if Roussel reinjured his knee that he may be done as well. We will see in the near future.

What I saw was a big guy with soft hands that had good positioning and used his size well to cover the middle of the ice.  People shouldn't forget that he's missed most of the last two seasons with various injuries.

I would be very happy to bring Graovac back on a two year deal and let him try and win the 4C spot.

Highmore - Graovac - Hawryluk was a great line as he does need two speedy wingers to get in on the forecheck for him to shine.

We were in cap trouble before Covid. The only one close to a legit fourth liner out of Roussel, Beagle and Motte, is Motte. As for bottom six, our bottom six has been an overpaid mess ever since Benning showed up.

Overpaid? Yeah they are but not exorbitantly. As for being 'legit fourth liners' Beagle and Roussel are still very much legit NHL players, Beagle is still one of the best at faceoffs in the league, which even though he is getting visibly slower, is still a huge part of the game. And Roussel, even after his surgery, is hands down the best PKer on the team, far better than Motte.

And besides both players will be done with the team after the upcoming season and by then, hopefully, Graovac will be ready for full time 4th line C duties.

So we're in cap hell, you don't want Rousell or Beagle  anywhere on the team, ok

Who takes those 2 spots from our current players?

Coach Green certainly had a long hard look at these 3 guys.

I just don't see enough urgency, tempo, nastyness from Graovac, but good point with 2 speedy wingers.

..

Highmore keep, Graovac keep, Abby regular, injury callup, Hawryluk, I don’t see it, maybe an injury callup as well.

Kind of hard to have an actual discussion then, unless I was your shrink. If we aren’t having reference to objective facts then all we are doing is talking about your feelings.

So you watch hockey stats not actual hockey. Cool. I like watching the game.
