Yah, BCers making a few million off their real estate holdings are really hurting for retirement....

I guess Calgarians with their 200, 000 dollar townhouses may be ones working into their 70's.....

Fact: highest earners in Canada are in Alberta. You guys are right up there with Manitoba.

Even Penticton and Kelowna are insane. Obviously BC is the nicest place on earth but not at the cost of being house poor.

@kingofsurrey and I can take jabs at each other but I know he agrees what's happening in BC isn't fair to young people. Economy should dictate price not dirty Chinese investments

With this i concur. 100%.

BC politicians  ( BC Liberals ) screwed the young people of BC...   really sad to see what has happened.

Yea I am not complaining.  I got lucky and got my house just before prices started skyrocketing and land investors have already come around looking at our place for development.  Now the wife and I have told them to come back in 40 years when we have retired and want to downsize....  But yea these prices are insane.

B.C as a province is beautiful, Vancouver itself is overrated.

Astronomical prices for shoe size condos and houses with no yards, unless you want to move to the sticks.

Plus so many people have mortgage helpers.

Yeah let me allow some weirdo to move in my house, just so I can say I live in Van or Burnaby.

Yeah, SOME condos in Calgary go for under 200K, most are well over 200K.

Average condo price as of Sept 2019 was around 280K

That's correct however there is many possibilities under 200k for brand new condos. I don't even think you could get that in kamloops ffs.

BOOM

Yeah...

I've lived in Victoria, spent a good chunk of time in Vancouver, Edmonton, lived in Calgary, Lethbridge, now Saskatoon for awhile...

I hate the Flames, but Calgary is a fun town. Good people, hard work ethic, & they know how to party.

I think blaming on a single party for it is a bit simplistic.

The fact is that demand for BC housing was always there. It just took a few good circumstances to blow it up out of proportion.

Fact: The proximity to Asia is a huge draw.
Fact: The Asian demographic in BC is also a major reason.
Fact: Lax Federal regulations on money coming in (more of a federal issue)
Fact: Lack of housing regulation

Actually many go to Arizona. Funny BCers usually working in retirement age...wonder why? Oh ya no money.

People of modest means in BC move to Mexico on retirement.  My wife inherited a timeshare in Nuevo Vallarta - it seems like half of BC's retired population have moved there - there they can actually afford to live well on CPP and OAS - if you live native. I an see why.  Friendly people, even friendlier if you attempt to learn the language, pleasant climate, you can sell your shovel and snowblower, and away you go.  If you plan ahead, you can buy property (it's cheap) and build your own place.  The government keeps the crime out pretty much because its a tourist destination - I can see why people do it.

I have heard. A friend of my brother is a contract programmer - he and his wife moved to Panama permanently a few years ago - they absolutely love it - he makes great coin and pays hardly anything in taxes - just bought a great house. It's nice if you work hard and make some money that you can actually keep some of it.

I had friends that moved to Panama also and they loved it. I have heard it's so violent but they tell me where they are it's very safe.

My 80 year uncle  -  was home invaded  last winter in Mexico where he lived 3 months a year... lived native there.

He was beaten then robbed... shot to death and dumped road side....

I am sure that could have happened anywhere..... right ?

Yah retirement in mexico. No thanks.

Seems to be many Canadians from my area buying places in Costa Rica.  I think they are fractional ownership types of condos in a gated community .
