Not saying it is a bad idea, but it would not solve the abuse/addiction problem.

Yeah it would if you lose 1/4 of a season's salary in the 1st infraction.

Also, if a player turns up, it can be in the CBA they go to mandatory rehab.

These people are supposed to be professionals, and role models to kids.

When the role models are doing coke, and its just a dirty secret, its an indictment on the league as a whole.

I remember the second half of Kassian's last season here, and when I was watching the Canucks with my dad, I said to him several times, "Look, Zack has party face".  Bloated cheeks, and dark sunken eyes. It was only a few days later that he had a "back injury", as in, he was back on the coke. I've known several people that went down that path who died before 40, who started to look that same way.

It's like the entire PED stuff. The league likes to turn a blind eye to the issue and only reacts in blatant cases. It is not in their interest to have cases that go public, especially not of star players.

Regarding the problem itself, I like the idea of mandatory rehab. In parts this is already implemented. Didn't Kassian have to do it? Then again, just like any other addiction you won't get rid of it by criminalising it. Some may be deterred, but there will be players who can not cope with the pressure, pain, expectations, responsibility, their false friends etc. and start drinking or taking other stuff.

Didn't Kass meet a girl after he was with us, and get hitched?  It's great to see him clean, sober, and doing well.  I don't think there is one fan here who doesn't have a soft spot for the big lug.

He can't hear you right now, as he's on his money phone.

He's going to need a lot more of those phones to payback his gambling debt,

A Las Vegas casino is suing Evander Kane, claiming the San Jose Sharks forward failed to pay back $500,000 in gambling markers given to him in April.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas filed the lawsuit against Kane on Monday, saying he took out eight separate credits that totaled $500,000 in mid-April.

Playoffs?  Don't matter, dude has paper to burn.

Edit: I see you already linked the story, my bad.

Cocaine has been around athletes since forever.

I recall Paul Molitor saying that in his early days with the Brewers, there was hardly a game where he didn't rip a few rails just before suiting up.

Tim Raines stealing bases for the Expos was done with a head first tummy slide so he wouldn't break the coke vial in his back pocket.

Is Kane going to be another of the many athletes who earn millions during their careers only to be paupers within two years of not playing?

Can't even imagine some of our young players on MDMA.

I can guess Hughes would be in some sort of full body animal costume, and Petey would dress up like the Terminator and walk around shooting pucks at imaginary targets

Is it wrong that I would paid to see that ha even throw Fin out there too ha

Some ol'codger: These young pro athletes are making TOO damned much money!

The "progressive" apologist: Well, it's Entertainment..y'see what movie people make? & if that's what the market wants to bear.

Then later on, we hear stories like this thread, & that same kinda bloke will say to me: "Well, what do you EXPECT when these young desirable people become millionaires?!"

& so the irony should be disregarded?!

Years roll by & we hear half of Hollyweird is raped(the other half suspects.."addicts" nudge, wink), & the sporting superheroes are junkies w/ the spoon up their nose.

I b*tched about some pitcher(name of a fish?) getting 400 mill to chuck a ball, about a yr back. Yeah, I'm often that old codger. But I've also heard these lame counter-arguments accepting the status quo. Just got tired of these usual debates, as the addicted masses(middle class) get economically-obliterated. Sooner or later(hopefully :^) this economic pain will trickle UP to the overpaid gladiators.

In light of all this, had accepted it was all out of whack, some decades back. Boycotted most western "entertainment" as an overpaid ruse, populated by hotshot, privileged 20-somethings. The media gorge on their scraps, if they properly explain away their lifestyles. Emphasize what great societal "donors/contributors" they are, on Mother Theresa scale.

***********************************Pro hockey was the last one I just couldn't kick**************************************

In general(having played a bit) I could relate to these small town athletes. They(mostly) seem pretty normal. As well, there's a truly significant portion of youth dedicated to acquiring the requisite skills..even if one is naturally gifted. That, & the accompanying physical danger to one's health, seems to exceed the personal sacrifices in the other big sports. Not paid as much either(relative to big-3), so I somewhat tolerated the whole shake-down.

In the end, guess we pick our poison. But the accompanying(mostly useless) & ever-fawning & expanding media-hordes make the whole process seem rather excessive.

Fine..give'em their millions. Not sure I wanna' hear another ****ing thing about what they choose to do with it.
