-Vintage Canuck-
Quote The Dallas Stars will retire defenceman Sergei Zubov’s No. 56 in the 2020-21 season. Zubov will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 18. “I’m touched and it’s been an honour to play for this franchise for such a long time,” Zubov said Monday in a video posted on the Stars’ Twitter account after being told his number was being retired. Zubov played the final 12 seasons of his 16-year NHL career in Dallas, and is the franchise leader in every major category among defencemen. A three-time all-star, Zubov also helped the Stars win their only Stanley Cup in 1999. Once Zubov’s number is retired, it will join Neal Broten (No. 7), Bill Goldsworthy (No. 8), Mike Modano (No. 9), Bill Masterton (No. 19) and Jere Lehtinen (No. 26) in the rafters of American Airlines Arena. https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/stars-retire-sergei-zubovs-no-56-2020-21-season/ 1
Lancaster
About time. Somewhat underrated defenseman. Probably could have played a few more years in the NHL if he wanted to. 1 1
nuckin_futz
The guy just kind of flew under the radar for so long. The jersey retirement is well deserved. Still remember that combination of Zubov and Brian Leetch on the 94 Rangers doing us in during the finals.
-AJ-
Underrated player. Good for him and the Stars.
RonMexico
Guy was smoking darts during intermissions and was still a top end defenceman.
HKSR
771pts in 1068gms through the dead puck era... man, he was a helluva defenceman. Fully deserving here. Now I might be in the minority here, but Jere Lehtinen has his number retired?? I mean, he was good... but jersey retirement worthy?
NUCKER67
I was always so stoked whenever I got Zubov in my hockey pool way back, always produced.

Two Selkes I believe, which says a lot about his two-way game.

I guess we can't talk with Stan Smyl in our rafters.

No way Dallas wins the cup without him, routinely scored 50 plus points in the dead puck era and a lot more before and after (scored 73 I think when he was 36-37 after the lock-out and the rule changes)... didn’t win a Norris - but the league never had as many talented defenseman as it did when he played - heck Lidstrom was all world and couldn’t win one until he was in his 30’s...this generation will produce a small group of HHOF a defenseman - EK, Doughty, Chara, Burns .... and maybe Hedman over a 25 year period almost. Leetch, Chelios, Coffey, Borque, MaCinnis, Pronger, Neidermayer, Murphy, Blake, Lidstrom and now Zubov. What a great an incredible group. Right now things are looking like great defenseman are coming back - four of the top ten 21 and unders were recently ranked in the top ten, including 1 Dahlin, 3 Heiskanen, 4 Makar and 10 Q Hughes (second highest in his draft year too - way to go JB). That hasn’t happened since THN started doing it.
189lb enforcers?
Not many here old enough to appreciate his career. He was an incredibly smart distributor and could play D with the best of them. He was so solid on his edges. Cool to see something like this. 1

No face-offs added to the metric - he was just that good at it.
