I've got news for you Babcock, nobody's been able to fix the Leafs since 1967, you're not gonna be the one to get it done, lol

The Maple Leafs (9-9-4) are 0-4-1 since Babcock became the eighth coach in NHL history to reach 700 wins when they defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 at Scotiabank Arena on Nov. 7. The Maple Leafs visit the Golden Knights on Tuesday (10 p.m. ET; ESPN+, ATTSN-RM, TSN4, NHL.TV).

 

"I'm in a pretty good spot in my life," Babcock said after practice in Las Vegas on Monday. "My kids are grown; if my kids were young, I'd never coach in Toronto. In my spot, I won't spend a whole lot of time listening. I do get text messages from people that are friends of yours and they're sending you texts, well, they care about you."

 

Babcock, who signed an eight-year contract with Toronto, in 2015, is in his fifth season as Maple Leafs coach and has guided them to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the past three, losing the Eastern Conference First Round each time. He is 173-132-45 with Toronto and 700-417-164 with 19 ties in 17 NHL seasons with the Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He won the Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2008.

 

Toronto lost a back-to-back set to the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins by a combined score of 10-3 and is fifth in the Atlantic Division.

 

"We didn't play hard enough for long enough, :bigblush:" Babcock said after the loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday. "In the end, as an athlete, you put on your sweater. You want to be proud of how hard you compete and how hard you play for one another. We didn't look after that.

 

"We have to take a look at each other and get this fixed. No one on the outside is going to fix it. We have to fix it."

Do you guys honestly think that even "a coach like that" can turn around the dumpster fire that is the Toronto Maple Laffs? Or is he gonna get FIRED only to be replaced by another coach that cannot fix the cursed Toronto franchise?

Kyle Dubas clearly wants Sheldon Keefe (Marlies coach) as the head coach, it's why he handed Keefe such a large salary to stay in the AHL and not interview for any NHL jobs the last two years. The problem is that MLSE handed Babcock a ridiculous contract and they'll be paying out of there ass if they fire him anytime soon. At the same time, this team has been built so poorly these last few years it's laughable.


Sure -- it's great to have Tavares, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Reilly... but after that the team's depth drops off the side of a cliff. They're not a well balanced team and they're certainly not a team that's built for a long playoff run. Hell, they had to trade a 1st round pick to get rid of a ridiculous Marleau contract and that pick looks like it'll be a LOTTERY SELECTION.

 

And they also don't have enough money to re-sign Reilly and Andersen when there contracts expire next year too. They'll have to part with Nylander, for sure, but the problems don't end there. Honestly, the decision that's gonna haunt the Leafs in a few years will be first signing Tavares when they didn't need too and then watching Matthews head back to Arizona (to save that franchise) when he becomes a UFA in 4 years. It's such a disaster zone, it's hilarious.

 

I also find it funny how the Leafs are desperate for depth and had Josh Leivo but mismanaged him so badly that they basically gave him to us for free. Leivo's the type of player the Leafs could use right now and they had him only to misuse him.

 

Either way -- LOVING THIS LEAFS MISERY and I cannot wait to see what happens this season. It'll be a delight for them to miss the playoffs this year.

Was gonna say a lot of this, but fortunately looked at your post here. It's incredible how much $$$ they're going to waste, frivolously building 75% of a dream house, with no foundation, on a steep grade(thinking beforehand only of the view). Then the rains come...

 

What's extra amazing is we've seen this movie before. The Burke yrs there were some huge gaffes(esp gifting high 1sts)..& it took so longgg for them to climb outa' that hole. When the retained $alary on Ke$$el Finally runs out, they'll prob be repeating this travesty, retaining $ on this next wave of overpaid, uninspiring floaters!

For the next 18 mos, traumatized Laff backers will be worrying/fixating on the quality of the 1st they'll(again) gift to a stronger US rival. I bet they'll finish bottom-10 this season, thus kicking the Marleau-can down the road to 2021. & they had all been laughing at the Sens for squandering a high pick on Duchene. At least the Sens usually got something in recent deals they've made. Leafs waste a 1st to simply Dump a player?!

Babs is still a premiere coach in the league 

 

His first year was only the 2nd time the Leafs had made the playoffs in 11 years and aside from that ridiculous defence they've only gotten better.  One could argue if it wasn't for Kadri they'd actually have won a round or two over the last 3 years.  Dubas and Shanahan have effectively, as one already said; built a dream house without a foundation.  No bottom 6, no defence at all and little in the way of assets or depth.

 

Shanahan being fired would only exacerbate the issues the Leafs have.  he's not infallible, as obviously there's coverage gaps that are coaching issues but look at the similar Oilers.  All that talent, 5 different coaches over 8 years or so and zero success.  Toronto will be firing Babcock, who will enjoy himself a nice multi million dollar holiday before being scooped up by Seattle.  They will then hire Keefe who will be lauded as the saviour before firing him after 2 seasons.

I always believe that Babcock is over-rated.

 

Sure, he won the gold in 2010.... but that was to be expected.  If they only got a silver medal, Canadians would be calling for his exile.  

He did win the Cup with Detroit, but that was still a stacked team as well.

Mike won't last there. Dumbass built a different team then mike has never coached. 

This is where the coach and Gm have to be on the same page. 

Mike coaches a 200ft game , has everywhere and has won coaching that way. Mike isn't going to change the way he coaches , that's one of the problems. 

Dumbass built a skill team and that's it. 

I could see Mike loving our team cause Petey Our star player , plays both ways and mike knows that's how you win when your star players ,play that way. 

I think AV the up tempo style he coaches could work for the leafs but dumbass really screwed the leafs with those contracts.

Aren't there people comparing Petey to Datsuik too?  I think Petey does play that way.  Plus, we have Bo leading the way with his hard 200 foot game.  When Babs gets the axe I think we should grab him.  I like Green, but (maybe?) for our team to take that next step we need a coach that's been there and done that?  We are a very young core, and I could see Babs pushing us over the top.
