grandmaster
Bit of an update: https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1913224 NHL on NBC host Kathryn Tappen released a statement Tuesday condemning the recent comments made by co-worker Jeremy Roenick that led to his indefinite suspension from the network. "While Jeremy and I continue to be good friends, what he said was unacceptable, especially among workplace colleagues. I do not condone his comments," Tappen said, according to John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal. Roenick was suspended Monday without pay for inappropriate comments he made during his appearance on the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast. The former NHLer brought up a trip to Portugal in which he, his wife, and Tappen traveled together, and he made multiple references to the three of them having sex. "I play it off like we're going to bed together every night, the three of us," Roenick said. "If it really came to fruition, that would be really good, but it's never going to happen." Roenick, who's been with NBC since 2010, later said Tappen is "one of the most professional sports personalities I know." He hasn't commented on the matter since his suspension. 1

Publicly talking about having sex with your co-workers has never been acceptable. Under normal circumstances yes... But he was on spittin' chicklets. That was vanilla compared to other interviews. Where he went wrong was choosing to go on the show in the first place. That was a major oversight on his part. Unlike most of the guests JR has a higher public profile to uphold. He's to Don Cherry like for NBC... They were probably looking for an excuse to get rid of him. JR gave it to them. He's probably gone permanently from the network. Times are a changing... On a better note... Merry Christmas to all of you! Stay safe through the crazy, wonderful holiday. Be with the people you love most (my mom just passed on the 13th) so make it count! Looking forward to bantering with all of you in the new year. Edited December 24, 2019 by Hogs & Podz 1

Popular Post Toews
Jokes like these make women uncomfortable, it is possible that the intent is largely innocent but voicing it out loud in public is putting the thought there in the minds of your audience. Not everyone listening has the same values or the same level of restraint. I wonder how many of the people condoning these actions would be fine with it if this was said about their SO or their mother/sister and distributed for mass consumption under the guise of entertainment. 1 2

Exactly. If this happened to someone close to them (partner, mother, sister, daughter, good friend, etc), how many would say..."it was just a joke and ask them to let it go and turn the other cheek".

I think there's a bit of an age thing going on here, if you're GenX or older you probably have at least one dumb friend like this that still says stupid things and you don't take it or them seriously. The co-worker still calls him a friend so my guess is this is somewhat of the case here. The behaviour is stupid for sure, but I think depending on age people might view the severity though different lenses. I can laugh it off cuz it's an understanding between them and me. And it's a private conversation. If it's not a close personal relationship, then most likely rude comments are crossing the line. In JR case, he was on the radio.

Very insightful and articulate comment, Toews. I am quite surprised that there are men/boys on this board that struggle to understand this. Statement from Kathryn Tappen on Jeremy Roenick: “While Jeremy and I continue to be good friends, what he said was unacceptable, especially among workplace colleagues. I do not condone his comments.” Pretty much says it all.

I've got a buddy who's basically a walking subconscious, he's said crap like this his entire life. Talks about how women look in the room while his wife is beside him, crap like that. But its all bark, no bite, and no one takes him seriously. He's not a bad guy, just an idiot that way. Given a public platform I have no doubt he'd do the same thing. This JR thing feels a lot like that.

I have no issue with that kind of talk in a podcast, but NBC is doing nothing wrong if they kick him to the curb, either. He can continue his brand of humor all he likes, but NBC doesn't need to be associated with it 2
