nuckin_futz
U.S. air strike kills top Iranian military general and Iraqi commander at Baghdad’s international airport Iranian Major-General Qassem Soleimani, seen here in 2016, was reportedly killed Friday in an air strike in Baghdad. (File photo) The Associated Press Iranian Major-General Qassem Soleimani, head of the elite Quds Force, and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed early on Friday in an air strike on their convoy at Baghdad airport, an Iraqi militia spokesman told Reuters. “The American and Israeli enemy is responsible for killing the mujahideen Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Qassem Soleimani,” said Ahmed al-Assadi, a spokesman for Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces umbrella grouping of Iran-backed militias. U.S. officials told Reuters that strikes had been carried out against two targets linked to Iran in Baghdad. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, declined to give any further details. Three rockets hit Baghdad International Airport, killing five members of Iraqi paramilitary groups and two “guests”, Iraqi paramilitary groups said on Friday. The rockets landed near the air cargo terminal, burning two vehicles, killing and injuring several people. Supporters of Iranian-backed Iraqi paramilitary groups stormed the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday following U.S. air raids on Sunday against Kataib Hezbollah militia bases in retaliation for missile attacks that killed a U.S. contractor in northern Iraq last week. Tension between the United States and Iran has ramped up in the region over U.S. economic sanctions hurting the Iranian economy. The two sides have traded blame over attacks on oil installations, militia arms depots as well as military bases hosting U.S. forces. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/world/article-one-killed-others-injured-as-rockets-fall-on-baghdad-international/ ************************** This has potential to become a really big deal. Guest
I'm wondering how many civilians were injured/killed, considering it is technically a war crime. Potential ramifications for the US?
bishopshodan
This is Trumps 2020 push.....and Iran has a lot of that black gold so it fits the USA model. Iran is not to be messed with. I don't know how much blood will be shed but this could get really, really ugly.

Of course they will respond. Of course there will be escalation. This is most likely now a proxy war with Russia backing Iran. Who will be more stupid? Hard to say. Trump wanted to avoid getting into more wars. Now he's got one. The plan was to withdraw from the JCPOA (Iran nuclear deal) then place Iran under crippling sanctions and force them back to the negotiating table to make a better deal than Obama made. However, Iran has refused to negotiate without sanctions relief. Usually replying with something to the effect of "go eat a d*ck" It's a huge cluster frack. And you have this situation. Qassem Soleimani is a huge deal in Iran and the region.
Popular Post *Buzzsaw*
This was one of the more idiotic foreign policy decisions Trump has taken. This has escalated the whole conflict enormously. Trump has killed a high profile Iranian General and a key Iranian government figure. Trump had justification for launching the first airstrike on the Iranian backed militia after one of its contractors died. There was no justification for this. Iran will respond... but worse than that, this airstrike in Iraq, at their International Civil Airport, will cause Iraqi outrage. Both the Iraq government and its people will consider this, quite rightly, as an infringement on their territorial sovereignty. I would not be surprised to see the Iraqis tell the US get all its soldiers out of Iraq very soon. If that happens, then all the 5000+ dead Americans who died kicking Saddam Hussein out and installing a pro-US regime in Iraq will have been for nothing. Trump will have handed the keys to Iraq right to to the Iranians. 1

Iran has consistently threatened to rip out the "cancer" of Israel from the Middle East. Iran refers to America as the "Great Satan" and Israel as his offspring. For the last 75 years, Iran has made these threats. Under the nuclear deal, Obama chose the policy of appeasement and so he Iran 150 Billion dollars to Iran, promising many sanctions would be lifted so they could continue their nuclear enrichment activities...all for national "energy" purposes of course. Iran doesn't want peace with the US or Israel, they want "Islamic" peace with the US and Israel subjugated under Islamic Sharia law. That will NEVER happen and tonight is just the start of what is sure to turn into a clash of civilizations, the 21 century civilization vs 17th century civilization. 1

Iran is not a democracy and is not a friend to the US. But the rest of your comments are nonsense... you have been watching too much Faux News. The chances of Iran taking out Israel and the US is zero.... both of them dwarf Iran in miltary power. Both the US and Israel have Nuclear weapons to deter Iran. Israel would use them instantly if they thought they were threatened. Iran is the leading Shia Muslim state and as such will protect Shia Muslims... they are doing that in Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen and in Syria, all countries have either majority Shia or large minorities. Their tactics are not pretty, but they will continue as long as they feel Shias are threatened by either Sunni Muslims, (Saudi Arabia) or Israel. The Shia minorities in Yemen are being systematically bombed and starved by Saudi. In Lebanon, Israel regularly bombs or invades. In Syria and Iraq, ISIS did its best to exterminate all Shias. What was needed was negotiation and compromise... the course Obama had taken. Trump's actions will cause a lot of death and suffering... with the loss of US lives too. 2 1
