Wow for leave min and a 2 way contract? How can anyone say this is bad?!?!?

If he just scores 10 goals, this contract is a success. Benning, where the hell were you on this? :picard:

If Green has issues with his defensive play then he can use him mostly on the PP.

GMJB OUT GM'D AGAIN

He can still do some damage in a powerplay specialist role, two years ago he scored 30 goals in 50 KHL games. The guy has scored over 430 NHL goals.

so? he managed a whole 3 this year and a -10 I think.

There is definitely a risk in bringing in a sour PoS trouble maker.

Kovalchuk is a bad influence especially on a younger building team like the Habs.

I doubt they’re worried about it with Weber as their captain

Two way though?  If he causes problems bury him in the minors?

assuming he reports, which he probably does not. As an over 35 contract that might mean Montreal is stuck with the full 700k cap hit but I'd have to get a ruling from a capologist on that one . Sure its not much but it could be the difference in another deal.

They have the room in the top 6 right now. They are somewhat desperate. So what. It’s costing them nothing to slot him in. I’d rather they give him a shot than Dale Weise

at least Weise is a responsible player.

Its a desperation hail mary move, takes up roster and cap space for likely no return. But it must be brilliant cuz Habs, rite?

Did I say brilliant?  I said no risk.  Weise is not a top 6 player. Kovalchuk potentially still is. It’s not like they signed him to a long term big money deal.  It’s a 2-way low floors short term deal.

I agree with @xereau you don't bring a guy like this into a room thats working. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, I see too much downside to this and and very happy Benning avoided it.

If it doesn’t work out you send him down.  That’s the reason they signed him to a 2-way deal that pays him $70k in the minors.  If it works out and he helps keep Montreal in the playoff race while they wait for their injured players to get healthy, then it’s a win.  The dressing room will be fine with character guys like Weber and Price at the helm

He is still on pace for over 40 points in a full NHL season. If he bounces back and produces at 20 goal/50 point pace while making league minimum. I dont see how that can be a bad thing, if it doesn't work out you can bury him in the minors with zero cap implications.

Green would be red.

Lazy, soft and attitude issues.

There would be more $&!# if benning made this move then bergevin.

unless it messes up a line further, causes angst in the room, etc. Guys done. Its not like he's still got speed or is a physical player, he'll need to be slotted into some prime minutes to put up numbers. Seems like a desperation move to me.

If we had half our top 6 go down to injuries I'd personally throw kovalchuk a welcoming party at league min. And a 2-way??? Its a no risk play for Montreal, and the potential positives are HUGE, the negatives are send him down. Great signing.

It’s just 700 freaking grand. Relax. The potential is well worth the signing. If he sucks you just drop him. Easy peasy

A sucking Kovalchuk is better than the five, six bottom players on the best teams.

Great signing.

It’s really cold in Montreal. He’ll feel right at home.

Crying over nothing Jimmy.

350k if he sticks. Or they assign him to AHL at 70k. Other option he goes home.

With all the injuries in MTL he'll get top 6 mins.

I called it he'd sign for league minimum in other Kovalchuk thread when he left LA.. we should have signed him for 2nd line to play with Horvat and Pearson.

Better than LE on 2nd line. He's a motivated guy and will prove ppl wrong..

350k rest of season in NHL or 70k in AHL you can't go wrong.

Wow, that's a BIG drop in pay. Shows how badly Los Angeles overpaid to sign an over aged player.

He only had 750k salary in LA and the rest was bonuses..

So it's like he got traded.. he had received all but 350k from LA this season.

One thing for sure Kovy is not greedy.in NJD when his big money kicked in at 11plus mill per year.

He left 87 mill on table. Went back home to Russia.

And voluntarily canceled his contract for next year with LA.. leaving 4.25 mill.

Unlike LE who isn't wanted and just collecting his 6 mill per year..

Kovy pure class.
