[Signing] Penguins re-sign Marcus Pettersson

Recommended Posts

Really young defenseman with good pedigree. Probably good long term for 20-25 points yearly. Corsi% has been above 50% since joining the Pens, as well. It was abysmal on the Ducks. Nice to lock him up at a reasonable salary.

I was hoping when we were talking about trades with the Penguins that this guy would be coming our way.  He would have been a really nice steady piece playing on the 2nd pairing behind Hughes on the left side.

It is a decent contract where they are paying him as a 2nd pairing guy, and he is eating up almost 20 minutes a night and has never been a negative +/- in his entire career.  Not the kind of contract you often regret.

Pitts has to be happy with how that Sprong deal has worked out / it looked pretty good at the time.

Pettersson becomes a solid 4/5 D for them.

25 pts last year, 15 this year, but as importantly, he's a very good young two way defenseman.

Just under 18 minutes a game last year, and 19:22 this.

Underlying numbers in Anaheim perhaps a bit misleading:

61% ozone starts, 46.5% corsi, but nevertheless positive goal metrics there.

And then in a larger sample in Pittsburgh

46.7% ozone starts, 51.7% corsi playing with Gudbranson last year

50.8% ozone starts, 53.2% corsi playing primarily with Schultz this year.

A pretty good two way complement to Schultz imo - I think he makes Schultz better - and just slightly less ice-time/game than Johnson = his emergence imo a large part of the reason/need to move/shop one of Gudbranson or Johnson.

Hard to argue with this deal - has been very good at ages 21-23 - and a 10th place finisher in the Calder last year.
