[proposal]The Canucks should Trade Boeser or Virtanen for a defenseman before the TDL

Miller-Pettersson-[Boeser/Virtanen]
Pearson-Horvat-Toffoli

Will be our top 6.  We all know that.   However, given that....

A) One of Boeser or Virtanen will be the “odd man out” on that 3rd line.

B-) Our defensive depth is still razor thin outside of Edler, Tanev, and Hughes (two of these three of which have a long history of injuries and by miracle, have escaped it thus far this season)

I think it would behoove the Canucks to move one of Jake or Brock for a defenseman, and given that Brock will be out for three weeks, I would suggest the long rumored Boeser for Dumba deal, with either side adding some small parts.   I’m not really a fan of trading players that are going through personal tragedy (ie Boeser with his father’s illness), but if moving Brock gets him closer to his family, I’d be all for it.

With a guy like Dumba here, with Tryamkin on his way here next year, the Canucks could also let Tanev walk in the summer, and use that money to re-up Markstrom and Virtanen.  Stecher could also be traded for a pick or unqualified in the off-season.

As far as Toffoli goes, I’m actually of the opinion that the Canucks will be likely to sign Toffoli if we get into the playoffs, and we move on from other certain players.

Future Canucks

Miller-Pettersson-Virtanen

Pearson-Horvat-Toffoli

Hoglander-Gaudette-Podkolzin

Motte-Gadjovich-MacEwan

Edler-Dumba

Hughes-Tryamkin

Juolevi-Myers

Markstrom

Demko

If the Canucks intend to sign Toffoli long term, I believe the following will need to occur:

1) Ferland retires.

2) Stecher is traded for a pick at the draft or is unqualified at season’s end

3) We walk away from Tanev (Tryamkin replaces him)

4) Eriksson either retires after collecting his bonus post July 1st, or is moved with a sweetener (Demko)

5) Baertschi is moved towards the end of the summer at 50% retention.

6) Sutter is moved towards the end of the Summer at 50% retention.

If all of the above conditions are met, then I believe that the Canucks can comfortable re-up Toffoli.

Dumba has really regressed this season.  Factor in his plus minus, and five on five  He is not any better than Stecher, and costs a lot more.

I would make this trade only for a Dumba--- Dumba would make team very solid... Very exciting ...

No chance we trade Boeser or Virtanen IMO.

I think Benning calls up Rafferty and Brisebois, maybe even Juolevi.

Sees who fits.

Canucks need another top 4 calibre guy just Incase Edler, Tanev, or Hughes gets injured.  Myers is borderline, but not a clear cut top 4 calibre guy.  Juolevi, Brisebois, and Rafferty aren’t top 4 calibre guys......yet.

That's the absolute last thing they should do.

Boeser is hurt.  All season, done.  Nobody is touching him.

Virtanen is starting to play harder, rougher and getting more chances...why the hell would any team take Boeser and why would we trade a cheap Virtanen?

1) I wasn’t suggesting that we trade both.  Just one.

2) Boeser is having an off year (Although his stats aren’t that bad), but so is Dumba.   I think it’s fair value.

There will always be an interest for a guy like Boeser.   GM’s aren’t so short sighted to completely write-off a player based on one year.

When we're scoring, Myers is that guy.

It's just when we're struggling that I've noticed he takes too many chances.

I get your point but I don't see why we would trade for a calibre Dman unless he is with us long term.

If anything I think he acquires an Enforcer.

No.

There's no need to even consider this.  At all.  We have 3 defensemen who can jump up if needed.  Scoring is always an issue.  Keeping Boeser and Virtanen makes so much more sense

I could see Benning going after an enforcer, but I hope not.  They’ve gone the way of the dodo bird.  MacEwan is a good enough heavyweight enforcer in my opinion.

The Canucks are an injury on D away (Edler, Hughes, or Tanev) from being a mediocre team due to a below average defense.   If the Canucks are serious about making the playoffs and possibly winning a round, another top 4 calibre dman is needed.

Well we have the cap space so we'll see what happens I guess.

Although I agree that our defense could still use some work, I can't see this happening. I think if there's a solid belief that we will be able to sign Tryamkin and bring him in before the end of the year, either Benn or Stecher, could be moved.

I think up front, JB likes the depth that we have and the overall mix.

Green and Dhaliwal are saving just now that Bess could be back before season’s End.

Or he could be out 12+ weeks. The point is that no playoff bound team will take that risk and teams on the outside can afford to wait and see how he recovers before considering a trade.

Could you imagine? If the Canucks grab ahold of a playoff spot, and then as the season is winding down, in comes Tryamkin and Boeser.
