Coconuts
Oh wow, I don't know what the cost is yet but it's a win for the Canes regardless. They absolutely need to grab someone for their back end and Vatanen's a quality piece. Only thing is he's a pending ufa and I think he's still on the IR? EternalCanuckFan
I like the deal for the Hurricanes if it didn't cost too much. Vatanen's a decent enough RHD. Hurricanes still need a goalie though.
Warhippy
Canes always leading from that back end. Nicely done

Keenan's Moustache
So with Devils shipping out Greene, Coleman, Simmonds and now Vatanen, I assume that they have made a shot across the bow to Detroit, Ottawa and others that they will be tanking hard for Lafreniere...... Qwags
Canes have a top 5 D-core, and that is without a healthy Brett Pesce. Edited February 24, 2020 by Qwags

theo5789
Canucks make moves and Benning is a fool for trading picks to make the playoffs. Carolina makes moves and they're considered brilliant for going all in.

Smashian Kassian
Seems like an underwhelming return tho I'm not sure how Vatanen has been this year. Vatanen is a guy I was wonder about going after instead of Barrie when those rumours we're heating up yesterday. At this cost it would've been the way if they absolutely had to get someone, but I'm fine not making a move for a D either way. Good move for Carolina.

I like them. The point is that Carolina not long ago were "rebuilding" and they have turned things around and are making a push, much like we are. Yet everything we do is wrong by the vocal crowd while other teams are deemed good. For example, people were praising the Pageau deal. No one looked into his history, dug up his advanced stats and nitpicked every detail. They paid more to acquire him than we did for Miller and Pageau offers way less. I don't think Vatanen is the player he once was, but still decent. He's had his injury issues of late (that would give players negative value if they were Canucks apparently). Kuokkanen is an excellent prospect. It would be the same as us giving up Lind and a 2nd for Vatanen. Pretty much the same deal as we did for Toffoli and people were even dumping on that trade because it involved picks and prospects.

They we're a better team than us before the moves we're made. We are a young team just starting to rise, Carolina is a team that has well built & has taken another step from a great run last year. I think the teams are just at different stages right now, not an ideal comparison. I'm glad we didn't pay another price for a rental. We need to have resources & flexability to be able to make these moves in the coming years as we continue to take steps. (hopefully) The Miller deal has turned out to be great, even more so with the prices paid at the deadline (which is natural). At the time criticisms of whether we're ready for it we're justified. Even the most optimistic fans weren't projecting Miller to get 80 points for us.
