Because the layoff has been long enough to be a major disruption. Teams especially those with veterans will potentially have a tougher time getting right back into the swing of things. The NHL will have a mini training camp of sorts and then start the 1st round, where the teams in lower seeds will play each other. Teams that survive those rounds will then have an advantage on the higher seeds who haven't even played a game of competitive meaningful hockey. I can see some major upsets coming and that will just further delegitimize the competition. The NHL needs to salvage some revenue out of this season, cancelling will likely cause a major impact on the league's bottom line which is probably one of the only reasons I think this should go ahead.

The bye week teams will play a "pre playoff " tournament to get warmed up, kind of like pre season"

His beef starts around 59:20. He has a problem with not finishing the regular season first.

I think 'ol Bert is making too much of it. The Canucks have played 69 games, and could play as many as 74 before hitting the regular 4 round cup run, vs an 82 game regular season. So freaking out over an 8 game difference is too much imo. For many teams the last week or two of the season isn't that much of a grind, the guys that are in often sit players to rest, and the ones that are out play prospects.

It would be fun to watch!

A team like cancuks may benefit them as they had a strong start but faded as they.got tired, older team may take a little longer to get rolling.

Also cancelling season imo doesn't work because come October Covid-19 will still be around and then what do you do, this at least gives nhl to work things out

That was my argument too.

Some people are saying just scrap this season and put all your focus on having a full 20-21 season.

That’s hard to do when the future is so uncertain. They very well may have to play under these conditions next season. So you’re right, this is just as much about working through these barriers for next season as it is finishing this season.

You can only beat the team they put in front of you.

The Raptors weren't less legit because half of Golden State was injured.

You win the last game of the playoffs, you are a legit champion.

Good chance the winner has to get off the couch and win 5 rounds and 19 playoff games instead of the usual 4 and 16, you could argue they are the most legit champs of any season and all others are less legit. That would be silly though because you can only ever beat the team they put in front of you.

24 works perfectly in that the teams out are the teams that definitely should be out, the teams that are in all had a legit chance.

as long there is 4 rounds, best of 7 each round.

of course, the older series probably all meet this criteria.  for modern era, it is ok.  reg season doesnt mean a whole lot when there is so many teams making playoffs, unlikre baseball.

this is the same Kypreos that said Weber was retiring?

Yes.  Earlier tweet was Lavoie 29 to 2.

Alex Killorn did confirm that he voted no on behalf of Tampa.  They felt it wouldn't be fair to have teams that probably wouldn't make the playoffs possibly end up in the playoffs after playing a best of 5 series.  They also felt that bye-teams would not be as well prepared.

yeah its not ideal. A best of 7 would have been more fair and more representative of the amount of regular season left to play.

what I'd like to know is ...why is Nashville ahead of us in those standings? we are tied in winning percentage, but we have one more regulation win than they do. does that not count for anything?

Minnesota than Colorado, who came up with that stupid format ? What about divisional games?

The conference bye-teams are playing in a mini-tournament where each team will play the other 3 teams.   It's still undecided but they might re-seed so not necessarily Colorado.

Nashville has more regulation wins than Vancouver - it's 28 to 27.

6 Nashville Predators 35-26-8 .565
7 Vancouver Canucks 36-27-6

.565

and that's according to the sportsnet article at the beginning of this topic

Win - Loss - OT Loss

A win in OT counts in the win column but it's wins in regular time that is the tie-breaker.
