Canucks' first-round pick transfers to Devils if they make playoffs

The Vancouver Canucks still own their first-round pick for this year for the time being.

In a Return to Play memo which the NHL sent out to clubs this past week, the league made a decision on conditional trades impacted by playoff participation, sources confirmed to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.

There was confusion on Tuesday when the NHL made the official the 24-team format as to whether that meant all those teams had clinched a playoff spot.

A playoff berth in the 2019-20 season automatically transfers Vancouver’s first-round pick to the New Jersey Devils.

The Canucks originally traded their first-round pick to Tampa Bay last June for J.T. Miller and the Lightning then dealt that pick to New Jersey before the Feb. 24 trade deadline for Blake Coleman. But the condition on the trade was that the Canucks had to make the playoffs this season for the pick to transfer for the 2020 draft. If the Canucks missed the playoffs, the Devils would instead get Vancouver’s 2021 draft pick - unprotected.

“More specifically, for Trade condition purposes, a Club will not be deemed to have qualified for the Playoffs unless or until they have progressed into the Round of 16, and ‘Playoff Games/Rounds’ will only include the games/rounds played in the Round of 16 or later,” the memo read.

“We believe this interpretation will best reflect the intentions of the parties at the time of the Trade.”

So, the Canucks have to win their play-in round against the Minnesota Wild this summer for the first-round pick to officially transfer to New Jersey.

If Vancouver loses that play-in series, the Canucks officially miss the playoffs and keep the pick - which would be a draft lottery pick - and the Devils would instead get Vancouver’s 2021 unprotected first-round selection.

Easy to understand. We're not in the playoffs yet. If we beat Minnesota, we are and thus our pick goes to NJ this year. If we lose to Minnesota, we miss the playoffs and keep our pick and NJ gets next year's.

With all the uncertainty and chaos surrounding the playoffs and its structure I think we stand a better chance of running deep than we would've had the season continued. Who knows? Maybe the pick ends up being the 31st pick

Also I don’t think we’re going to have a roster this good that fits under the cap for awhile. Gotta take advantage of that.

If fans were involved this year I would say you might be right.

 

However unless Minny is chosen to be a hub city (very doubtful now) I don’t think it will be a factor.

Wouldn't it be 16th/31st?  

 

And yah, I'm thinking the league may have 2nd thoughts now about having the games in the states, given the turmoil there... 2 weeks of self-isolation vs dodging angry mobs and national guards - I know which one I'd prefer

This two week isolation is for people without brains....test the players and staff for both covid and anti-bodies than they don't need to self isolate, unless they test positive.

I'd take the 1982 Canucks team, teleport them to our time and have them play on the streets.  That was one tough #@%@#%$13 team.  Though, any team with Gino on it, you wouldn't bet against either if you were in stuck in a dark alley.

The teleport idea is interesting, common NHL players are much better than players of 1982 with much better equipment too. My bet is on  the 2020 Canucks skating by the 1982 team, If it's 1982 Mustang or 2020 Mustang i know which one i want

I would love the Canucks to make the playoffs and get lots of experience, but I will also be happy if we also retain the first round pick too.

 

If we land within the 8-15 range, there are some really good prospects that could help us too.
