so I was told to do a 2017 redraft a whiles ago and I got time now so yolo here we gooOOO

all rankings are purely opinionated

2017 REDRAFT - Top 15

The Top 5...merely shuffled

  Hide contents

1 NICO HISCHIER (PREV 4)

A franchise center, a lady byng trophy, and a mean consistent 70pt center. An incredible talent and any team would be pleased to take the Swiss Claude Giroux at 1 in a redraft

2 ELIAS PETTERSSON (PREV 1)

A franchise center and consistently improving his play and point totals. Good for 70pts but not as consistently as Nico.

3 NOLAN PATRICK (PREV 2)

A franchise center and one who can surely pop 70pts. His two-way play is enticing but his consistency holds him back from #2 in a redraft.

4 MIRO HEISKANEN (PREV 5)
A stellar top pairing dman, this guy would not even be a regret at 1. Best defender in his draft.

5 CALE MAKAR (PREV 3)

...tbh a very strong argument could be made that Makar > Miro. However, Spoder's laughable team accomplishments weighs down Makar one spot over the mighty miro.

6-10...wingers and mediocrity

  Hide contents

6 OWEN TIPPETT (PREV 10)

The best winger of the class, a consistent 30 goal talent. Unfortunately marinated in Boston's mediocrity.

7 EELI TOLVANEN (PREV 18)

A very strong winger and often 30 goal scorer. Good for 60+ pts and would be a good choice at 7.

8 MARTIN NECAS (PREV 16)

A player who shows flashes of excellence. Can go 20-40 games at PPG. Greater consistency would place him as the best winger of the class.

9 CASEY MITTELSTADT (PREV 8)

A strong 50pt center, he is not a bad option to soon take the helm at 1C or 2C. Unfortunately has been bitten by mediocre teams.

10 GABE VILARDI (PREV 6)
A strong 50pt center, he is not a bad option to soon take the helm at 1C or 2C. Unfortunately has been bitten by mediocre teams.

11-15...inconsistent and unexciting talent

  Hide contents

11 VANYA LODNIA (PREV 75)
A consistent 50pt winger taken in the 3rd round. Particularly boosting his rankings over peers, his playoff performances have been nothing short of shocking. This depth winger continues surprising and remains a consistent bottom 6 threat.

12 ROBERT THOMAS (PREV 24)
Much like Casey and Vilardi, Thomas is about a 50pt center. Hurting his draft stock is the wild swings in performances season after season.

13 KAILER YAMAMOTO (PREV 27)

This 40pt winger may not belong at 13 solely off point totals, but Yamamoto might just have been stuck the worst possible combination of teams from this draft class. His historic -57 highlights this. On pace for 65pts this year, there is room to believe that Yamamoto has plenty of upwards mobility in him on better teams.

14 FILIP CHYTIL (PREV 21)
Chytil is a consistent 45-50pt winger.

15 CONNOR TIMMINS (PREV 26)
Timmins is a sturdy 30pt defender who is currently being scratched more than played. There are other similar defenders in this range but Timmins has been given a shoutout due to his consistency and sturdiness.

Honorable Mentions: Suzuki, Kostin, Comtois, Brannstrom, Altybarmakyan, Dipietro, Carter, Virtanen

That about concludes this redraft. 15 good players starting with strong elite talent and ending here with talent that does a poor job of impressing. The 2017 draft was not a deep draft and many of these players outside the top 10 best players are easily replaceable. Stocking up on picks in this draft was not worthwhile. So let's take a look at some busts.

BUSTS

BUST - JUUSO VALIMAKI

selected at 11th overall, this defender compared to the likes of Sami Vatanen, has done poorly. Unable to amass good point totals, a good TA/GA or a good amount of icetime, probably indicates that Jusso has not reached the potential one might expect of an 11th overall pick with high expectations.

BUST - CALLAN FOOTE

even worse point totals than Valimaki, Foote redeems himself with a better GA/TA and some more ice-time. The better GA/TA and icetime may suggest that he has reached a higher CA than counterpart Valimaki, but ultimately this 12th overall pick is underwhelming and easily replaceable.

BUST - LIAS ANDERSSON

this player who has yet to hit 40 pts in any given season (and Carl Soderberg comp) was selected over much better comps (such as an Eric Staal comp). What a Wilde first draft that was.

BUST - HENRI JOKIHARJU

useless player taken at 19

BUST - MICHAEL RASMUSSEN

selected NINTH overall, this player has amounted to absolutely nothing other than being a frequent leader in PIMS. Perhaps one of the worst players in the league when points and PIMS are factored in to consideration. You would have been better off taking a nobody at 9 who never played a single game than going through the frustration of watching Rasmussen be a total inside job and deteriorate your team. If some guy gives him a chance once @Blue Jay 22 releases him to FA then they deserve to watch their team lose. Garbage player. His comparable is Jeff Carter but it should really be Patrik Stefan because this guy should be ashamed of himself -- he DOES NOT belong in this league.

Takeaways: There were maybe about 10 quality players that hold their weight from the 2017 draft. Another 5-10 project players who belong in the bottom 6 of a good NHL team and another 75 useless players, none more useless than Michael Rasmussen.
