Popular Post Zfetch
Analytics Revisited: For @Caboose edition. --Exploring SHA-- Below we explore shots against and how one team may reduce their shots against, which naturally will lead to a stronger GA. Variables used in this aLgOriThiM are: TeamSB, TeamGA, TeamTA, TeamPIM and TeamHits. Disclaimers: 1. Overall team SHA was calculated by using only your teams starter SHA/game. There was movement with backups during the season but no movement with starters last season, so this was the most accurate way to capture team SHA. 2. The variables above used such as team hits are simply a summation of players individual hits. There will be some error due to movement with players during the season, although the actual error is likely somewhat small. Neat tidbits before we start: 1. Hurricanes were the strongest team in shot suppression. 2. The Avalanche were surprisingly strong in shot suppression, ranking 6th overall. Perhaps we wonder if Thomas Vomacka wasn't their starter, @Vrienzy and his Avalanche might have made the playoffs. 3. Islanders were the team that allowed their goalie(s) to get the most peppered. Following closely were the Canadiens and Sharks. Running da algorithm: Most of you won't understand this nonsense and thats okay so I will keep it short. The data was firstly run through a random forest algorithm to understand the importance of each variables with relation to SHA. For example, if you were trying to understand team PK time (:pk:), it would probably reveal that PIM are 80% important in determining how much time a team spent shorthanded while maybe the other 20% depends on if you let in a goal or not. So for this problem, these are the importances of each stat for team SHA: Quote Variable: teamPIM Importance: 44% Variable: teamTA Importance: 22% Variable: teamHits Importance: 16% Variable: teamGA Importance: 9% Variable: teamSB Importance: 9% To nobody's surprise, the time a team spends in a box makes up about half the reason you're getting peppered. It is interesting to note that takeaways and hits appear to be more important variables in shot suppression than GA and shot blocks. But these numbers don't mean anything anymore, so let's run them through linear regression to uncover some more... The running of da algorithm part 2: We run this same dataset through another thingy and we get a bunch of random looking numbers that we won't get too deep into. I will apply the exact numbers to specific player examples later on, but for now, just know the following relationships: Quote More PIM = More SHA More HITS = Less SHA More GA = More SHA More TA = Less SHA More SB = More SHA Intercept = 21 Now most of this self explanatory and obvious but two interesting things to note: 1. Blocking more shots appears to lead to more shots against. This is the only variable that appears counterintuitive. Perhaps the general idea is that players who block more shots are on teams who face more shots, which could explain the relationship. 2. The intercept of our data is 21. This means that for reasons outside any of the above listed variables, a team can expect to face around 21 SHA regardless of who their players are and what they are doing on the ice. Are the results valid? Yes. The results when estimating a teams SHA are 96% accurate. This gives confidence to that the above variables can do a pretty strong job in estimating a team's SHA/game. Below are actual SHA/game vs estimated. Applied Player Examples! (APE): *I have concluded prior that SB is not likely to be causing SHA, and it may indeed be the other way around. I will not include any players as SB examples. Shaqir Djurovski (EDM) led the league in PIM with 80. Assuming all minors, he was responsible for approximately 114 SHA all season because of his lack of discipline. Assuming a .900 goalie, around 11 Oilers GA can be attributed to Djurovski's feistiness. The highly coveted Rob Hagel (VAN) had 60PIM. Assuming all minors, he was responsible for approximately 86 SHA all season sitting in the box. This translates to 9GA solely from this dude being unable to show discipline. San Jose fans let out a "good riddance" to this former Kaz cronie. Evander Chauviere (CAR) lead the league in hits with 362. His hitting alone saved the team about 55SHA all season or roughly 5 goals. Not a bad outcome for one player who loves to push mofos into the boards. Perhaps Chauviere was just one of the many key cogs that saw the Hurricanes out surpress the opposition. Mikhail Skokov (LAK) had a solid 270 hits. This saved Qwags team about 40SHA or 4GA throughout the season. His 'little things' make up a little for his underwhelming Franchise winger play. Keep your head up young Qwags. (reminder that GA has lesser importance as shown in an earlier section) Jeff Sweetman (NSH) the epic defender with 75GA to 29TA, was responsible for about 22SHA for giving the puck up so much. Yevgeni Kuznetsov (ANA) only had 4GA all year. He probably saved his team 2 cute goals against due to his sturdy passing and handling. Perparim Ristimaki (DAL) as unhappy as he may have been, had an epic performance in the takeaway deparment with 106. His takeaways reduced SHA by about 66, saving his team from 7 more GA had a lame player been in his place instead. Pirmin Walker (CBJ) took away about 6 goals, unfortunately it was not enough for the struggling BJs. Michael Lowe (CGY) is showing he was a worthwhile #1 OVR pick, his 133TA alone saved his team about 83SHA or 8 goals. Now those are only individual stats alone. That paints a picture on the impact that a single stat can have. Clearly our data from earlier is more respectable, we can see that PIM and TA do indeed have the largest of impacts on team SHA. But let's take a look at the best and worst shot suppressers with all things considered cuz that's cuter. Top 5 Shot Suppressors in the league: Perparim Ristimaki (DAL) - 80 SHA suppressed Jaccob Slavin (CAR) - 70 SHA suppressed Pranab Singh (BUF) - 69 SHA suppressed Evander Chauviere (CAR) - 67 SHA suppressed Viktor Hedman (TBL) - 63 SHA surpressed It is crystal cut and clear, Perparim Ristimaki is head and shoulders above the competition in shot suppression. Another thing to note is CAR has a crap ton of shot top-notch shot suppressors, which would explain why they led the league in that regard. Slavin, Chauviere, Boris White and Kyllian Scheidt ALL made the Top 8. Top 5 Shot Encouragers in the league: Shaqir Djurovski (EDM) - 82 SHA incited. Maxime Comtois (VAN) - 58 SHA incited. Elac McNeal (WPG) - 58 SHA incited. Colton McBain (NYR) - 53 SHA incited. Scott Laughton (DET) - 52 SHA incited. These players should be doing something offensively, because they sure as heck are not doing anything defensively helpful. Shaqir Djurovski leads the way even more than Perparim Ristimaki leads the way in his respective category. Shaqir is still signed with EDM and it appears his only redeeming feature is his cute flag: TEAM ALL STAR SHOT SUPPRESSION: Cam Covarrubias - Perparim Ristimaki - Pranab Singh Gabriel Landeskog - Kyllian Scheidt - Mark Stone Ryan O'Reilly - Connor McDavid - Jakob Silfverberg Vili Siren - Jonathan Toews - Jan Gebre Selassie Jaccob Slavin - Evander Chauviere Victor Hedman - Boris White Morgan Rielly - Miro Heiskanen If you can somehow build the team above, you will expect to face.. .... ..... 16 SHA per game! Epic ments! Good luck creating that team. _____________________________________________________________________________ Hope you enjoyed this edition of analytics. Kobayashi Maru
The quest for three begins. We would like to welcome Lindholm, Benn, Zucker and rookie Farkas to the team for this year. We feel they will all provide the spark needed around the core. We had an interesting offseason discussion with Ristimaki where he felt he wasn't getting the playing time with linemates to make him successful. He now is the pillar of the third line and has excellent linemates to start the year in Benn and Horton. We feel that he will thrive and we hope to mend the relationship. Going into the year we are starting with: Ehlers - Hischier - McGill Brodeur - Zibanejad - Lindholm Benn - Ristimaki - Horton Farkas - O'Reilly – Zucker Byram – Klingberg Regula - Pietrangelo Zadorov - Perunovich Pugin Porter Edited December 3, 2020 by Kobayashi Maru 2
