Prized defenceman prospect Travis Sanheim has been sacrificed to Arizona in order to get rid of the anchor contract of struggling 4th liner Dale Weise, with Tobias Rieder coming back in exchange. Weise had 7 points and a rating of -11 in 30 games with the Flyers this season. Playing on the 4th line and the penalty kill, Weise was by far the worst-performing skater on the team. His ill-fated contract had 4 years left at a cap hit of 2.35 million. Flyers fans will surely be devastated by the loss of Sanheim, but it may have been the only way out. On the bright side, the Flyers still have plenty of young LD to hold the fort. Shayne Gostisbehere is currently the team's de facto number 1 D, while Ivan Provorov and Jacob Larsson are highly-touted prospects. The acquisition of Tobias Rieder should not be understated either. Rieder had 8 points in 30 games for the Coyotes, while playing in the bottom 6 of a very bad team. He is expected to start on the 4th line and 2nd unit powerplay, and compete for a spot in the top 9 as the season progresses. If Rieder manages to score 10-12 goals, the Flyers might even make the playoffs. The Flyers have slipped to a 14-13-3 record, but a wild card playoff spot is still well within reach. Star players Claude Giroux and Shayne Gostisbehere will be hoping to lead the team back to their winning ways.
