Popular Post Monty
yeah - I'm not hindsighting this - I was very critical of the moves Arizona have made - and pointed out repeatedly at each step, that adding players like Kessel, Hall, etc to a team that was in the tracks of a Dave Tippett - was bizarre at best, and likely to result in some strange ruptures in what we know as typical 'Coyotes' hockey. I think the results pretty much substantiate the point = they had one 20 goal scorer this season (granted it was 70 games, but still) their one 20 g scorer was Conor Garland. Kessel was a predictable disaster. Their leading scorer had 45 pts. Not one regular defenseman on that team had over 50% ozone starts. The only one that had a 50% corsi was Chycrhrun, who was a dead even 50.0%, with 49.6% ozone starts. I don't 'expect' Ekman-larsson to look like a Norris candidate on paper in that context. And yes, I would expect that playing with the Canucks - who had 4 x 20g scorers and 6 x 45 or more pt players....OEL's production - and likely his 'possession' numbers would uptick here. How that translates 5 or 6 or 7 years into the future, I don't know = no one does. If I'm building a team, I tend to be more 'conservative'. As I've indicated in other posts on these boards - my priorities (not being able to vet any actual deals with actual opposing GM's) - my 'plan' would tend towards re-signing Tanev, allowing Juolevi and Fantenburg to tandem the 3LHD spot, and my principal efforts would be to add RHD depth. If I were spending principal future assets, I'd probably target a Cal Foote (who Tampa likely will not be able to protect) to deepen the youth depth emerging on the right side. So the principal question would be Stecher vs the opportunities of the marketplace, and as opposed to focus on 'replacing' him - I'd be looking at RH succession instead, not assuming he's gone - but a player like Foote added to the mix. I think the cost of acquiring players like Cernak, Mayfield, etc are worth vetting, but I'm not terribly optimistic that the price would make sense in the end. I think talk of Ekblads is pipe-dream material, (but acknowledge that you 'never know' - however the opportunities in the emerging market are far more likely to involve veteran dumps and unprotectables imo, as well as RFAs who find themselves without chairs in the musical-Covid-chairs game that is likely to transpire in free agency). There is more unpredictability than ever. OEL was relatively unforseen - unless someone were to know beforehand the desperation the Coyotes would find themselves in. It's not the kind of circumstance I would have 'expected' or even sought...however, I'm not going to argue with doing due diligence here - if a lowball could possibly bring in a player like that, you have to consider it. But the idea that he's a borderline #3, the stories of his lack of hockey intelligence, etc - are the typical kind of dismissable stuff you 'expect' to hear in a weekend-warrior, instant rice age of pseudo-analytics. 5
Popular Post Nail
It may not have that much to do with Edmonton as a market anyway. The Oilers have Koskinen already, who has pretty much identical stats to Markstrom last season. He would have to be a 1A/1B situation here. Markstrom - .918 save percentage, 2.75 GAA (43GP) Koskinen - .917 save percentage, 2.75 GAA (38GP) You can't really justify having one guy getting a ton of more starts over the other. He would have to share the crease. It's not the best situation if you want to be the defacto no.1 guy. 5
