On another note: I would have Adam Fox as the 3rd finalist. I know Kubalik's 30 goals was impressive, but his total points doesn't impress me as much (46 pts) and he is older and has pro-experience. IMO, Fox had a more impressive season with the Rangers in comparison as he was a plus player (+22) as a rookie defenseman putting up 40+ points.

Even if Quinn doesn't win I think it's damn impressive that we've had a finalist for the Calder for three consecutive seasons.

For only the third time in 80 seasons

a rookie defenseman leads the league in rookie scoring with 53 points. But not good enough for the Calder apparently.

Hughes should win but that has never stopped the eastern sports biased media from effing things up in the past on several occasions.

Agree with everything here. My pick is Hughes by a hair, but I'm betting Makar wins. Fox should also definitely be third.

Quinn deserves to win but Makar is too hyped not to win. 

 

Either way a top 2 finish in the Calder race 3 years in a row is pretty damn impressive.

I still think Quinn is going to win !

 

His impact on the team is undeniable and he was a ridiculously steady presence on the back end contributing both offensively and eating some big minutes. The confidence he brings and natural talent is a combination the Canucks have been needing for years. He overcame any odds stacked against him in regards to his size and he did led rookie scoring as a defenseman on a team with mediocre expectations. Heck I'm bias but I'll be damned if he doesn't deserve it. Hoping for it!

As most of us here know. and others without a bias, Hughes should win for sure. 

 

 

Makar will get the nod though.

I'm not sure that's entirely accurate.  I think whichever one wins, Hughes or Makar, it's well deserved

Does Hughes get a bonus (that would go against the cap) for winning the Calder or does he get it anyways for just being nominated?

Maybe it's just me, but it still bugs me that they call them 'finalists'.  There is no final vote.  There is only one vote and these guys are the top three vote getters.  The winner has already been determined.

 

The way they announce it you would think that these guys are the three nominees that the voters get to choose from, but that's not how it works.

What elite company!  Saw Leetch play in 1994, but who's Bobby Orr?  Never heard of him.

Makar had 50pts in 57 games. The guy is a stud, and totally deserves to win the Calder over Hughes...who had 53pts in 68 games.

 

Makar: .88 pts per game

Hughes: .78 pts per game

Can make a case for both Hughes and Makar, both had excellent rookie campaigns.

 

Would be nice to see Hughes win, but it wouldn't be a knock against him if Makar does.

Thanks eastern media but perhaps there is more to picking who is more deserving than just reading the stat sheet.  Hughes was more relied on, on a lesser team - also one could argue was the better defender.
